Whew! Is it ever hot out side. Back porch thermometer, in the shade, reads 98°! Good thing I painted 150 feet of chain link fence yesterday when it was only 95°!! Expand Your Horizons- Last week's post included a tip from Lyle Jamieson about making a secure glue block connection. In this video Jim Rodgers demonstrates another method of connecting to a glue block- Another scoop from Alan Stratton. This one uses offset turning and a couple of neat jigs. Also, check out Alan's method for turning spheres- WITHOUT a jig! Lots happening this past week! Our Patriot Turners- @keith long stopped by to say "Hi". He is busy with life and doing well. He had some questions about lathe parts. Just about the time of the year when I start having dreams of beginning another school year- and all the things that can go wrong! Our Patriot Turners- @calabrese55 posted one of his segmented bowls in the "What's On Your Weekend Agenda". I love the combination of colors! His post has more images. Check it out here- @Headhunter posted a really neat setup for assisting in making square cuts across a log. He posted it in our "General Woodworking" forum but said it was OK to share it here Looks like it can be helpful for us turners- @Gerald finished up the turnings and dice boards he was commissioned to make I never hear of either of these items. Thankfully, Gerald explained their uses. Gerald also started a discussion about project ideas. He wondered how/if we saved pictures/drawings to be inspirations for our own turnings. He received lots of great comments and examples. Please check out his post and add your thoughts to the others- We are still getting entries on out "What's On Your Lathe" forum. This one from @forty_caliber @John Hechel is passing on his turning skills to a younger generation. What a wonderful way to keep turning alive! Pennsylvania Farm Show week. It's the largest indoor agricultural event in the United States: sixteen acres of displays and exhibits all under one roof. The Pennsylvania Farm Show is a week-long celebration of the state's leading industry - agriculture. Big doings around these parts. Our Patriot Turners- @Masonsailor posted another of his beautiful kitchen turnings. This ice cream scoop is absolutely lovely- Paul tells us more about the turning and has added a few more images in his post- @jthornton added some more content to his post on the segmented cutting jig- After making sure it was accurate, he started working on the segments for his "popcorn bowls" @HandyDanhad some read oak and turned it in to a beautiful little bowl- Dan thinks this species may not be the best for holding liquids- Dan had earlier turned some tiny little bowls after watching one of the videos we posted last week- Check out this link to what Dan posted- What’s Coming Up- Bunch of stuff coming up. Last Wednesday in September! Where did the month go?!?!? Our Patriot Turners- @forty_caliber Started turning a bowl from a piece of wood we don't often get to see- He tells us about the wood and his plan for drying, in his post- Forty also had a bit of a problem with a tenon on a bowl blank. He explained what he did to remedy the situation- @Ron Altier continues to experiment with new ways to embellish his Christmas ornaments- Ron tells us what he used and where to purchase it, in this post- @HandyDan continues his tradition of making sure new babies have at least on gift. In this video, Richard Raffan demonstrates how to almost completely eliminate them- A great video from Jim Rodgers on why catches occur when using gouges- Alan Stratton comes up with yet another method for turning scoops. This is a one piece scoop- Speaking of scoops, here's an old video from Tim Yoder demonstrating how he does it- Expand Your Horizons- How thin do you turn your bowls?? Here, Kent Weakley demonstrate techniques for turning really this bowls- Sometimes the turning we had in our mind isn't quite what comes off the lathe. Here, Tim Yoder makes design modifications on the fly. The results are pretty neat! If you have one of Ruth Niles' Joyner Off Center Jigs You know it can be a little frustrating imagining exactly what the final pattern will look like. In this video, from the AAW, Dawn Petrie-George shows how to create a template to help with this. These were made back in 2007 and had been used hard in Mimi's kitchen. The pepper grinder set a little too close to the stove and the heat discolored the wood. All of the surfaces had accumulated cooking oils/grease from daily use. Sanding and fresh applications of gloss ploy, The platter is the one that got way too thin at the center mounting mortice. Did all the sanding/finishing and then filled the mortice with Alumilite mixed with black opaque coloring. Safe turning

It warms up and then we get rain. Our Patriot Turners- Our resident ornament master is at it again. @Ron Altier posted some things he created from just scrap pieces. Steve turned some lovely bowls. A slow week here in our turner's forum. Changing disks on the Velcro sanding pads just adds to the delay. I know @Gerald has a sanding disk for each grit and that can save some time. It also saves some wear and tear on the Velcro. The why and the what are explained in his video- New Turning Items- This is not a new turning item but a change in a turning product. This video, starting about halfway through, talks about Niles Bottle Stoppers and something that can now be made public- Everything Else- Rick Turns must be on vacation as he did not post his usual roundup of YouTube woodturning videos. Hopefully you can find something interesting within our post, this week. I finally put the finishing touches on those rolling pin holders. There is no lathe work involved with these so I'm going to bore you with the flat work. These start out as 3/8" x 2 1/4" x 23" pieces of walnut- Using a template for all measurements the pieces are marked Before they are shaped into ellipses, a dovetail is milled into each end to accept the rings to hold the actual pin. The rings are milled from maple and have the corresponding dovetail shape The top maple piece is an open ring- The bottom maple piece has a recess cut made with a Forstner bit Both are glued into place. Nine more to go, only took a couple of days- I'm not @steven newman Finish is next. 2 coats of oil based poly, steel wool rub down and an application of paste wax Next to install the hangers Locate the holes using the same template Drill for the nails Well this sucks. The shortest nail is too long. As Steven would say- "we have ways..." Hanger...Done! ...and finished- Safe turning and stay well

Here we are, into March already. Hard to believe. The robins have been here for a couple of weeks so I guess spring can't be too far away. Our Patriot Turners- @HandyDan used his machinist skills to design and build a really useful drilling attachment for his lathe. His tailstock quill was reengineered for easier drilling- Dan received lots of comments on his work! Please check out more images and some of the things our members had to say! @RustyFN 's new lathe was delivered this week! I hope we didn't cause it to rust too badly with all of the drooling! He has it in place, fired up and makin' shavings! Our gang didn't waste any time in congratulating him and making comments! @Fred W. Hargis Jr is still practicing and getting ready to turn the table legs out of cherry. This picks up where he left off last week- Our turners have been providing lots of encouragement and advice - @AndrewB is finishing up a Pepper grinder- He is refining the jig he is using to hold the pieces while turning- Andrew turned another grinder from a 4 x 4 instead of a glued up lamination. For more information, click on the above image. For The Newbies- There are always a lot of questions about turning a green bowl from start to finish. Craft Supplies USA produced a video showing the process- Expand Your Horizons- The bowl video illustrates turning a bowl in the "tradition" fashion- the grain running across the diameter of the bowl. Another method of making bowls is to have the grain oriented vertically from the top to the bottom of the bowl. Turning end grain efficiently often calls for specialized tools. In this video, Jim Rodgers, illustrates the use of some of the tools. The bowl video illustrates turning a bowl in the "tradition" fashion- the grain running across the diameter of the bowl. Another method of making bowls is to have the grain oriented vertically from the top to the bottom of the bowl. With Saint Patrick's day approaching, who else but Tim Yoder would turn a shamrock! Eddie) posted a plea for turners to get involved with this worthwhile cause. If you are interested- Last Weeks YouTube woodturning video list from Rick Turns- It was rainy and ugly out on Sunday so I had a little time to work on the revised steady rest. Spent a fair amount of time over the last couple of weeks working with Sketchup to get the dimensions correct. Have most of the pieces cut, drilled and fitted. Some parts are assembled but the most critical dimension will have to be done when all the parts are cut and clamped together. The wheels have to be centered on the headstock drive center point. It’s the end of Sept so for me I start getting the Xmas present stash going. My usual is ice cream scoops, salt and pepper mills and bowls. Today I didn’t have a lot of time so rather then get involved in the latest cabinet project I turned a handle for an ice cream scoop. I actually found a relative that doesn’t already have one. I have been giving them out for years. Of all the items I make they are by far the most popular and quickest to make. Usually less than an hour start to finish. This one is cherry. Paul
