  1. Where did the summer go?!?!?!?!? Our Patriot Turners- We've had more activity on our "What's On/Off Your Late..." From "ON"- @Gerald posted several of the things he is currently completing! Some amazing looking pieces. Check out the post to see how Gerald created those amazing colors on the vase- And from "OFF"- @kreisdorph completed a couple of gorgeous bowls. I just cannot get over how beautiful the spalted one came out! Catchup from last week starting here- @AndrewB continues to grow his tool inventory. Check out what he has done this week- What’s Coming Up- If you missed Cindy Drozda's live tool talk last week, she posted it on YouTube- Click on the following images for links to more information and registration- For The Newbies- Kent Weakley, from Turn A Wood Bowl, has a nice video demonstrating the body positions during the turning process. Mike Peace turns a great little item that may just be something the Mrs. would like- Expand Your Horizons- Another installment of the "4-Ways" collaboration. I must be a cheap skate- I keep mine in an old scuba diving net bag Seems lately that baby rattles have been the current flavor of turning. Carl Jacobson has a special reason for this one- he's will be a grandpa soon! New Turning Items- Sorry, couldn't find anything this week... Everything Else- I've been working on a cane for my brother. First time trying one of these. There is a lot of lathe use but much of it is just a way to hold the cane while working on shaping it. I did turn the tapered shaft. I can't take credit for the design as I liberated much of it from "mmh's" blog I found when doing research. I am at the point where the sanding is finished and I need to laser engrave his name and put on a finish. Have to set up the laser and play a little with test pieces to get a nice engraving. The Derby handle is tiger maple- the stripes show better when I wiped it down with mineral spirits. The collar is cherry and walnut. The shaft is hard maple. The black dots are dowels that go through the cane to pin an internal oak dowel that runs from the handle to the shaft. The pins are ebony turned from old piano keys. Safe turning
  2. Some nice mid-August weather. Mid-August can you believe it??? Our Patriot Turners- @kreisdorph added a new item to our "What's Off Your lathe...". A really nice piece of elm. In his post, Kent explains the function and added some really neat photos! @AndrewB has been keeping us up-to-date on the progress of his shop make over. Getting everything into just the right place can be challenging. Check out his most recent post on what all he has done- What’s Coming Up- Bunch of stuff coming up as the summer winds down. Click on the images for links to more information and registration. For The Newbies- Looking for a nice project? Richard Raffan turns a plate from some beautiful piece of wood. Plates/platters are fun to make and can be decorative or useful. The blank doesn't have to be several inches thick and hollowing is much shallower. Make a bunch from inexpensive wood and use them to support those flimsy picnic paper plates. Check out the oil finish at the end! For something (and someone) a little smaller, Mike peace turns a baby rattle- Expand Your Horizons- Alan Stratton turns and hollows some spheres. His method of laying out/turning the blank into a ball is really interesting. Mike Peace turns a mystery, no holes salt shaker. Check out the secret! New Turning Items- Niles Bottle Stoppers has their meat tenderizer set on sale. https://nilesbottlestoppers.com/product/tenderizer-set/ Everything Else- Safe turning
  3. Lots happened this past week! Our Patriot Turners- @Gerald posted more images of his "Frig Magnets". His Jaho jig really creates some spectacular designs! Here's where the new entry starts- @John Hechel made a couple of posts in our sub-forum for Ringmaster Turning. He showed us some of his glue ups and some absolutely gorgeous bowl! Check out his posts here- @RustyFN posted an update on his new McNaughton Bowl Coring System. He created some measuring devices to help setup the system for different sized cores. Thanks, Rusty for the update! I love all your posts on our "On/Off Your Lathe". It is so enjoyable to see the development and finishing of the projects. From "ON"- From @kreisdorph and @Gerald Catch up from last week starting here- From OFF- @kreisdorph and @User74 The latest entries start here- What’s Coming Up- If you missed Cindy Drozda's Tool Talk last week, she posted the video on her YouTube channel- Click on the following images for links to registration and more information- For The Newbies- The bowl gouge can be confusing for the new turner, especially when it comes to the type of "grind" on the tip. Professional turners seem to have individual preferences and provide that grind style on the tools they recommend/sell. Lyle Jamieson discusses his preference in this video. Jim Rodgers creates another custom pen. Check out some of the jigs he uses to create the pieces. Expand Your Horizons- Alan Stratton turns a bowl as a keepsake for a tree that needed to be removed. Most of us do this when we are gifted wood. What I found interesting was Alan's use of UV epoxy instead of the typical epoxy/acrylic. Here's the entire video- the UV information is at about 4:30. The "4 Ways Collaboration" continues. This month they turn multi-sided plates Mike- Tomislav- Sam- Richard- New Turning Items- From Ron Brown- Glue Press for Bowl From Board or Segmented Rings https://longworthchuck.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=536 Everything Else- My experiment with the turned blank from last week was a miserable failure. That turning became this- The prototype for a passive amplifier. There was a barely noticeable increase in volume but it looks neat. Biggest mistakes- don't use a spade bit for long holes, cutting an angle and rotating is not produce as nice as cutting 2 angles. As in Alan Stratton's video, I did turn a little bowl from our Crab Apple tree that is dying by inches. Planted it in 1969. Safe turning
  4. Lots happening with our turners this week! Our Patriot Turners- We have a new member at the Patriot who is also a turner! @calabrese55 showed us some of his work when he introduced himself. How about this beautiful segmented turning- Check out his post and give him a Patriot welcome! He also posted another bowl in our "Monday Morning" forum- Check it out here- Our "What's On Your Lathe" was also hot this week. New posts start here- Some of the images from @teesquare, @forty_caliber and @calabrese55 @Steve Krumanaker turned a cane for his daughter and his son cast the knob. Andy his an expert on casting! See the cane and the back story in Steve's post- Our resident ornament expert, @Ron Altier, gave us his impressions on turning bamboo. Ron's conclusions are that's it's probably not the best overall species for turning. In one of our posts, there was a mention of the Lichtenberg burning process. @Gerald was kind enough to do a little research on safety when doing this. The process, when ALL safety precautions are observed, can create beautiful patterns. High voltage is dangerous when we become complacent. My neighbor, the electrical safety training officer in our borough, was electrocuted on the job. Insulation, isolation, incomplete human electrical path and full awareness are a must. This is what Gerald found- What’s Coming Up- Click on the images for links to more information and registration- For The Newbies- Richard Raffan turns a nice little shallow dish in real time. Mike Peace shows how to turn a simple but elegant lidded box. He even makes a special chuck to hold one of the pieces. Holding turnings can be challenge. Home made chucks supplement purchased ones. Sometimes adding modifications to a purchased chuck is the answer as Alan Stratton shows us. Looking for an inexpensive gift? How about salt and pepper SHAKERS. This video from Craft Supplies USA shows us how to make them- Expand Your Horizons- Mike Waldt completes a beautiful elderberry vase- Mike also demonstrates his method of turning finials. This video is from a live feed so it is a little long- New Turning Items- Last week we posted a review from Mike Peace on his new Powermatic 2014 lathe. Mike has a chance to use it and has posted more of his impressions- Ron Brown has release his new lathe mounted disk sander Here's the link to more information- https://www.longworthchuck.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=66&product_id=477 Woodturners Wonders is now a Vicmarc Dealer Check out their complete line- https://woodturnerswonders.com/collections/vicmarc?_kx=gV5SF2As_3IwtBi5TrpHVQM0F3UvGVbQKzhWGippDlk%3D.VJvU8R Some great prices, at Spiracraft, on Easy Wood Tools products @Jordan Martindale ! https://spiracraft.com/?inf_contact_key=d8ae9197ac7a87c978260b58c8e41427 Everything Else- Boy did this bring back memories! Safe turning
  5. I have drooled over the Woodturners Catalog just as I used to droll over the Sear's Christmas catalog a long time ago. I want to excel in finials as I move to more lidded vessels, or are they hollow forms? I don't know. Lids with finials, at any rate. I am an experienced, probably middle of the road quality turner with a combination of carbide and traditional tools. I may rough out with carbide yet the last cuts are with a steel tool, as nicely sharpened as I can get it. All of my tools are really too big for the smaller finials, so I am looking at a 3/8 spindle gouge. As I began, the sales guy told me I needed a Sorby Spindle Master so I got one. It works reasonably well, though I have yet to master the Spindle Master. From some videos, it appears that there are the more traditional spindle gouges, then some that are swept back quite a bit. One place calls it an Irish guide. The videos I have watched seem to favor the more swept back gouges. So, I will do OK choosing a brand, but if you have a strong preference, please say so. My real question is whether I should get the more swept back gouge or a more standard gouge for making finials. Thanks Robert
  6. Today, I had the greatest pleasure by being able to deliver all of the Ward 57 Christmas gifts to the Forney family. We met with Travis, Michelle and their two youngest sons- Houston and Levi. Great folks! Even though the kids' gifts have been purchased, there is still time to get in on the awesome prizes in our raffle. Your donations will be forwarded to Mr. and Mrs. Forney to help out with raising their 5 young boys. So, be generous, I know they will appreciate it beyond words. Our Patriot Turners- @forty_caliber posted a video from Robo Hippy describing a uniquely shaped gouge. Forty also purchased that tool and showed us a little on how well it worked- Forty also posted some images of his new sander/grinder setup. I really like that flexible shaft idea! @Bob Hodge posed a query about what type of spindle gouge would be good for turning finials. Several of our turners had suggestions and also shared some of their turnings from their favorite type of gouges @RustyFNTurned a couple of beautiful bowls- one from pecan and one from walnut What’s Coming Up- https://meetthewoodturner.com/ For The Newbies- It's getting closer to Christmas and if you are short a couple of gifts, Carl Jacobson has an idea for a cute little bottle stopper- Another gift idea comes from Mike Peace. This is a two part video and part 2 is linked from Mikes channel- Kent Weakley offers some tips on how to reduce the stress and strain on your body during turning- Expand Your Horizons- Alan Stratton uses mixed media to produce really fantastic Christmas ornaments. Last week, we posted a link to threaded inserts for screw-on lids. In this 2 part video Mike peace demonstrates how to cut your own threads directly into the wooden turning. Part 2 is linked from Mike's channel- Richard Raffan has a short video discussing various finishes for turnings. These aren't your ordinary clear coat finishes- New Turning Items- These LED lights are similar to the ones sold by Cindy Drozda. Pretty good price. Available from Woodturners Wonders- https://woodturnerswonders.com/collections/lamps/products/eclipse-led-lathe-lamp On a personal note: if you have a soldering pencil, an old 5 volt USB charging brick and cable and a rare earth magnet- you can get these and build your own. Everything Else- Rick Turns list of YouTube woodturning videos from last week- Found this on social media and thought it described how many woodturners/woodworkers felt about their work Safe turning
  7. I'm combining several things here. I'm relatively new to spindle turning after fourteen years with bowls and plates. Christmas ornaments for the grandkids - they get a new one each year from G'dad An early attempt at finials. I haven't captured the art or feel for these yet. None are very close to the design in my head or on a nearby piece of paper. We will see how my lighting effect trial works. I drilled through all sides of the blank before turning it, later filling in with somewhat iridescent marbles. Hopefully, they will transmit the Christmas lights through and around. As with most first time projects, I announce that "I could easily do twice as good in half the time if I was to do this again. " Maybe I ought to try to see if there is any truth to it. I like when I can use lacquer and don't have to worry a lot about using something more heavy duty.
  8. A slow week here in our turner's forum. Our Patriot Turners- What’s Coming Up- Click on the following images for links to more information- From the AAW- For The Newbies- Sanding our turnings is time consuming. Changing disks on the Velcro sanding pads just adds to the delay. I know @Gerald has a sanding disk for each grit and that can save some time. It also saves some wear and tear on the Velcro. Here's a video showing shop made sanding disk holders- Wooden scoops are always a nice addition to the kitchen. Here Richard Raffan shows us how he does them- Check out his YouTube channel for more turning videos- https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2tEGrCP1GiVwfaT4K9bcNw Tracey Malady demonstrates the versatility of the Easy Wood Tools, @Jim from Easy Wood Tools, carbide cutters as she turns finials- Expand Your Horizons- A neat tip from Lyle Jamieson on how to keep lighter colored sapwood from darkening- Alan Stratton demonstrates some shop made jigs for creating turnings with eccentric patterns- Our local PBS station is always a little behind the rest of the country, especially when it comes to woodworking shows. This past Saturday, Jimmy Clewes was featured turning his signature platter. The episode is available for purchase at- https://www.woodsmithshop.com/episodes/season15/1511/ New Turning Items- With the Virtual AAW Symposium taking place, I am hoping there will be some new turning tools/equipment introduced. Guess we will have to wait and see. Everything Else- Rick Turns list of YouTube woodturning videos from last week- In preparation for each week's "Wednesday's...", I spend some time searching for informative videos. Some come from YouTube. I noticed recently that the YouTube users rating system seemed different. The "Thumbs Up" choice is listing the number of positive responses. The "Thumbs Down" choice doesn't show any negative votes. Thinking this was a little odd, I went searching for the reason. If you are interested in understanding the change- https://youtu.be/f1Izh3-c88Y Could this be a carryover from the "everybody gets a trophy" generation?? Safe turning and stay well
  9. Please don't forget we are in the midst of our annual Operation Ward 57 charity drive to support our adopted family. We are less than halfway to our goal for making their Christmas one to remember. If you haven't donated, please consider helping give back to a wounded warrior. Our Patriot Turners- @forty_caliber posted some pictures of his latest rough turned pecan bowl He describes it in his post- @Ron Altiercreated some earrings for his daughter. Ron certainly is the master at combining colorful wood species for maximum beauty. In his post, Ron shows us a little on how these were made- What’s Coming Up- There's been a date change for an IRD from Cindy Drozda's presentation on ornaments and finials. You can sign up at- http://www.cindydrozda.com/html/Demo.html For The Newbies- A big shout out to @FlGatorwood for sending me links to these videos. The first one is sort of a continuation of the previous pepper mill turning video from Mike Peace. This video show turning a "crush grind" mill from a kit. The second video is a great resource for learning to do inside-out turnings. @HandyDan and @FlGatorwood have shown us some of their fantastic pieces in the past. Expand Your Horizons- With ornament season in full swing, displaying these items doesn't necessarily need to be on the tree. Alan Stratton shows us how to make an ornament stand. I was particularly taken by his wire bending jig. In this video, from Turn A Wood Bowl, demonstrates adding a lid to the bowl being turned. The lid has an integral finial. New Turning Item- Over the weekend, I was lucky enough to have the time to enjoy the Vendor's Showcase zoom presentation. This was a 6 hour event, over 3 days, with demonstrations from Cinda Drozda, Lyle Jamieson, Steve Worcester, Todd Raines, Joe Fleming and John Jordan. Each presenter demonstrated their unique turning specialty along with some of the products they use. They took questions from the viewers and had discussions on techniques. One of the presenters, Lyle Jamieson, posted a video of his demonstration. Included was the use of his signature hollowing rig- On our woodworking forum, and this forum as well, dust collection is often discussed. We all know the importance of having a good setup for cleaning the air. I am not sure of this author's credentials for the topic but he makes some good points- Everything Else- Rick Turns list of YouTube woodturning videos from last week- I finished up and delivered some small walnut bowls for the bookkeeper at school. The walnut log came from her parents home. They had many memories of the tree and wanted some way to have the tree live on. These bowls are 5" to 7" in diameter and 2" to 3" deep. Turned with Easy Wood Tools and the rim treatment was done with a Sorby Spiraling tool. The round bowls were finished with mineral oil and beeswax. The natural edge with wipe on poly. Looks like I need to do a better job of dusting before taking the pictures. Safe turning and stay well
  10. A little different format this week. No lathe and different scenery There were some additional comments and information about @HandyDan's finials. Please see his post for what was said- @Kevin Beitz is looking for a non-typical lathe head stock. Check out his request and see if you may know where he can locate one- @Gene Howe gave me a heads-up on a group that is helping combat veterans thru woodturning. Please checkout this YouTube video and share it with others to help get the word out- Rick Turns posted the September woodturning videos list- It's not too early to start thinking about turning those Christmas ornaments. Here, Sam Angelo does a birdhouse- And, Mike Peace let us know about this ornament contest- Mike Peace also added a video on making a tail stock cone center. These are very useful items especially when turning projects that have drilled/hollowed centers. Safe turning
  11. Whew, it's been hot and humid! Finally finished up the electronics repair on the old stereo. Maybe now I can get back to turning! Our Patriot Turners- @RustyFN showed us a beautiful bowl he made from maple, cedar and bloodwood. The colors are fantastic together- Rusty received loads of great comments on this one. Read more about this turning in Rusty's post- A couple of weeks ago, @Gerald posted a link to a video on basic woodturning and what we need to know. That post continues to generate comments a questions. If you haven't been following along, here's the complete post- @Ron Altier Created another one of his masterful ornaments! Ron explains how he did the colors/finish in his post- What’s Coming Up- @Jim from Easy Wood Tools reminded us of the Las Vegas AWFS Fair coming up this weekend. If you are in that area, you'll want to stop around the Easy Wood Tools both and meet Carl Jacobson! For The Newbies and Expand Your Horizons- This week I'm combining these two topics. A turner/teacher I've been following, Bradley McCalister, has a Monday morning, live Facebook program. Bradley demonstrates tools, techniques and answers questions on a variety of turning subjects. His presentations last about an hour and are well done. If you have a Facebook account, you can tune in at https://www.facebook.com/spiracraft . Bradley realizes not everyone "does" Facebook. He is also posting the recorded programs on YouTube. Those videos will show up around Thursday of the same week. You can see them at- https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-3H1VnNmaoJClpHYd3pLgw/featured. New Turning Items- We mentioned this item once before but didn't really have anything other than a picture to help describe it. Thanks to a link from a post from the AAW Symposium, here's a very short video showing the light in action. The lights are available from- https://woodturningtoolstore.com/ Woodturners Wonders is having a nice sale on quite a few things. Whole bunch of stuff under $15!! https://woodturnerswonders.com/collections/products-under-15 Everything Else- We posted this earlier but in case you missed it, the latest volume of Woodturning Monthly is available- https://www.woodworkersjournal.com/woodturning-monthly/?utm_medium=email . Lots of projects and techniques. A couple of weeks ago, we linked a video by Tim Yoder, where he made a ring. As a follow-up, Tim has posted a two part video on making a bracelet. The metal parts are available as kits, which Tim mentions. Part 2 is linked from Tim's YouTube channel. My turnings always seem neanderthal and clunky. Every once in a while, I'll get something to come out a little better but that is rare. Lately, while practicing hollow vessels, it has become apparent that graceful lines and proportions may not be my forte. I went searching for some ideas to supplement my lack of natural talent and came across two article. The first was from Cindy Drozda. She discussed her finial turnings and what she felt looked "right". It is obvious she is a born artist. The second article expanded on Ms. Drozda's turnings by using mathematics to explain why her turnings are so pleasing. I am not sure who penned this article but for sure it wasn't me. Math is not my strong suit. http://web.hypersurf.com/~charlie2/Turning/DrozdaOnionFinial/DrozdaOnionFinialProport1.html Anyway, the author discusses, in detail, the various ratio and proportion rules that our brains can interpret as "pleasing". In an artist's mind, this all must happen by instinct. Not me! I know, I'm getting carried away here. From the link, above, I was able to create an Excel spreadsheet to instantly calculate the critical dimensions for turning a finial. The image in the spreadsheet was copied from the article. By entering the overall height of the finished finial in the blue cell, the critical dimensions are calculated and listed. I have not tried applying this to a piece of wood, yet. After it was all done, I wondered, is this more like building a model. Shouldn't art be spontaneous? I'm pretty sure Michelangelo didn't use spreadsheets. Be that as it may, the spreadsheet is available at- https://drive.google.com/file/d/1dZTi9FvkfC9OBwN2VnOnV2MGJVWpKw11/view?usp=sharing if anyone is interested. Safe turning
