September 22, 20205 yr Popular Post It’s the end of Sept so for me I start getting the Xmas present stash going. My usual is ice cream scoops, salt and pepper mills and bowls. Today I didn’t have a lot of time so rather then get involved in the latest cabinet project I turned a handle for an ice cream scoop. I actually found a relative that doesn’t already have one. I have been giving them out for years. Of all the items I make they are by far the most popular and quickest to make. Usually less than an hour start to finish. This one is cherry. Paul
September 22, 20205 yr Gorgeous! I was looking through the new fall Woodcraft catalog and it has a really nice selection of items like this.
September 22, 20205 yr Author That’s where I get the mills and scoops from. The scoop is the hawksbill one. I have tried some of their other items and they were Either not very good quality or something people just didn’t use such as the coffee scoop. The garlic press is not good at all. The pin comes out after a while. The vegetable peeler itself is OK but people tend to want to put them in the dishwasher which doesn’t work well for wooden handles. Paul
September 22, 20205 yr I made a couple of their pizza cutters (round wheel). The $22 one is really nice and I made the handle to unscrew. . Edited September 22, 20205 yr by lew
September 23, 20205 yr No craft shows this year so I have plenty made for Christmas. Does not mean I stop turning as I have too much wood.

September 24, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Busy day around here with workers on the roof so I couldn’t open up the shop today so another small project was in order. I decided that since that ice cream scoop is for a very special relative I might as well make a box for it instead of just wrapping it. Paul

Paul If I got that fancy for something like that for my Mother she would think, oh this is just for show. If Dad ever even breathed on it, yup you know it, beams of death. September 26, 20205 yr One year I made several pizza cutters and ice cream scoops, all from Rockler. Great quality and they ones that I had could all be unscrewed from the handle. So, I made a card and attached to each kit and said it is not dishwasher safe. It's not even sink safe. I finished some with CA glue and some with poly. Everyone enjoyed them and thought that I was rich. Little did they know that I purchased a few each month throughout the year so I could pay off the credit card each month. This year will be pens, again. I have some pecan (fresh) and cedar. Will be mixing it up some. That is really a nice scoop there, Paul. I really love that cherry handle. I missed what you finished it with.
September 26, 20205 yr Author Popular Post I use Howard’s Butcher Block Renewal. It’s basically wax and mineral oil. I usually include a small bottle of it with the present so they can add more as needed. Paul
September 28, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Needed some turning time. Glued up some end cuts of African Mahogany for a small turning. It will make a nice present for someone. Only had an hour or two today so I will finish it up tomorrow. Paul
September 28, 20205 yr Don't you love the way mahogany cuts? It is so smooth to turn and I love the ease of cutting into it with a gouge.
September 29, 20205 yr Author I agree. I love the African Mahogany for its grain structure. It’s a pain to work with compared to Honduran but worth the effort. It polished to a glass like finish with amazing chatoyant qualities. I’ll give this one a few more coats before Xmas. Paul
