The second attempt in somewhere at the bottom of the trash can- The third one is on the lathe awaiting the finish. I have no artistic talent. The opening is very plain. In this video, he demonstrates the use of the Beall Buffing System. I usually put Ron Brown's newsletter thoughts at the end of our Wednesday's post. Ron's thoughts, this time, really fit into expanding your horizons. Correct Proportions Help Make A Pleasing Shape The Golden Mean, also known as the golden ratio, golden section, or Fibonacci rule, is a principle of design that can be applied to wood turning to create objects with proportions that are considered aesthetically pleasing. The golden ratio is approximately 1.618. This ratio is found throughout nature, from the spirals of a seashell to the branching of trees. Artists and architects have used it for centuries to create a sense of balance and harmony. Applying the Golden Mean In wood turning, the golden mean can be used as a starting point to determine the proportions of various elements of a turned piece, such as: • Height to Diameter: For a vessel like a vase, the golden mean can guide the ratio of its height to its widest diameter. For example, if a vase is 10 inches tall, the golden ratio suggests its widest point should be approximately 6.18 inches (10 divided by 1.618) from either the top or the bottom. • Dividing the Space: The ratio can be used to divide the bowl's form into different sections. For instance, the ratio of the bowl's base diameter to its rim diameter could follow the Golden Ratio. This would create a pleasing visual progression from the bottom to the top. • Location of Features: The golden mean can also be used to position design elements on a turned piece. For a hollow form or vase, it can help determine where the widest point should be located to create a visually appealing curve. Similarly, on a wide-rimmed plate or bowl, it can guide the size of the central bowl in relation to the overall diameter of the piece. • Proportions of a Foot: The size of the foot or base of a bowl can be determined using the golden ratio in relation to the bowl's overall diameter. This helps create a stable and visually balanced foundation. • Proportions of a Finial: A finial is typically composed of several distinct segments, such as a base, a sphere or urn shape, and a tapering spire. The Golden Ratio can be used to determine the ideal proportion of these segments to each other. For example, a designer might ensure the ratio of the total length of the base section to the total length of the tapering section is approximately 1:1.618. This creates a natural-looking visual flow, preventing any one part from appearing too large or too small. Tools and Considerations Woodturners can use golden ratio calipers to apply this principle to their work easily. These calipers are designed to maintain the golden ratio as they expand and contract, allowing the turner to quickly check and adjust the proportions of their piece while it is on the lathe. Trent Bosch* offers high-quality Golden Mean Calipers HERE. Prices range from $40 to $175. While the golden mean is a powerful design tool, it is not a strict rule. Many turners find that using the golden ratio as a starting point or a general guideline helps them create pieces that feel "right" to the eye. It's important to remember that design is also about personal preference and artistic expression, and a piece can still be beautiful and well-proportioned without adhering strictly to the golden mean. Some artists prefer a more intuitive approach, relying on their "eye" and experience, which may lead to proportions that are very close to the golden ratio without any deliberate calculation. Lots of stuff this week! Our Patriot Turners- @calabrese55 posted a concept for modifying a set of calipers- See his post for what he proposes and additional information. @Gerald posted information concerning Teknatool USA Bankruptcy filings. Lots of folks use their products. Guess we will have to wait to see how this shakes out. @Fred W. Hargis Jr added a comment to the end of last weeks "Wednesday". Fred said that even though he has watched a lot of turning videos, he is still having trouble with tool presentation to the work. I did some searches on the topic and found several videos that might help him, and others having the same difficulties. For bowl gouges, this one has really great closeups- These are from noted turners, however, they are from live demonstrations. Ron Brown's latest newsletter may provide some. Turning Wood Is Like An All-You-Can-Eat Buffet There is a seemingly endless variety to choose from. Some you know instantly you want, some quite the opposite. There are others you might want to sample first before digging in. There is something for everyone’s taste in the world of woodturning. General Categories: Dried wood, wet/green wood, branch wood, wood from trees brought down by storms, projects using glued segments, wood suitable for spindles (grain runs parallel to the lathe bed), bowl orientation (grain is perpendicular to the lathe bed), hybrid wood and resin, structural projects (columns, posts, balusters, etc.), furniture parts (legs, stretchers, stool seats, etc.), projects using kits (pens, seam rippers, bottle stoppers, pepper mills, etc.) Within each general category, there are several sub-categories. Most folks never venture beyond 3 or 4; a few will try 5 to 7, then usually return to the category they are most comfortable with and know the most about. Here are a few items for your consideration: Bowls, vases, platters, goblets, pepper mills, candle holders, pens, bottle stoppers, Christmas ornaments, spindles, rolling pins, tool handles, jewelry boxes, decorative eggs, mortar and pestle, egg cups, honey dippers, spurtles, garden dibbers, mushrooms, finials, drawer pulls, bracelets, desk organizers, cake stands, salt cellars, lazy susans, mallets, yo-yos, coasters, napkin rings, birdhouses, chess pieces, plant stands, picture frames, serving spoons, tealight holders, fruit bowls, urns, platters with inlays, sculptures, toys, tea kettles, coffee scoops, trays, jewelry trees, herb grinders, clocks, letter openers, spinning tops, furniture legs, balusters, posts and columns, segmented urns, vases, basket weave illusion plates, vases, and bowls. Well, January is just about in the books and I see that Punxsutawney Phil will make his winter prediction on Sunday. New Turning Items- A couple of weeks ago, we posted a video from Todd Raines demonstrating the Robust "Tru-Arc" tool. Sam Angelo gives us his impression of the tool in this video- Everything Else- I did an Easy Wood Tools demonstration for The Catoctin Area Turners' club last Thursday in Leesburg, VA. I thought @Gerald would be interested in their Beads of Courage boxes shown during the show and tell portion of their meeting Well the rolling pin blanks are finally finished- yesterday! The demo/workshop is this Saturday. 24 blanks here and 2 more at the workshop location. I make my blanks 22" long and 2 x 2" square. The lathes available for the workshop max out at 15" and 17" so angles had to be adjusted for a pleasing look when turned. Also some of the supplied blanks were smaller that 2 x 2 all that required different cutting angles. Some blanks were larger (almost 3 x 3) and my jig for cutting the angles wouldn't let the saw blade reach a high enough point to cut the proper insert slots. Had to design another jig for those blanks. Now on to Mimi's honey-do list that has been expanding exponentially! Safe turning

Just about the time of the year when I start having dreams of beginning another school year- and all the things that can go wrong! Our Patriot Turners- @calabrese55 posted one of his segmented bowls in the "What's On Your Weekend Agenda". I love the combination of colors! His post has more images. Check it out here- @Headhunter posted a really neat setup for assisting in making square cuts across a log. He posted it in our "General Woodworking" forum but said it was OK to share it here Looks like it can be helpful for us turners- @Gerald finished up the turnings and dice boards he was commissioned to make I never hear of either of these items. Thankfully, Gerald explained their uses. Gerald also started a discussion about project ideas. He wondered how/if we saved pictures/drawings to be inspirations for our own turnings. He received lots of great comments and examples. Please check out his post and add your thoughts to the others- We are still getting entries on out "What's On Your Lathe" forum. This one from @forty_caliber @John Hechel is passing on his turning skills to a younger generation. What a wonderful way to keep turning alive! Middle of July, almost, and it feels like summer here in south central PA. Our Patriot Turners- @forty_caliber showed us a beautiful bowl made from Pyinma. In his post he tells us more about the species and the purpose of this little bowl. Forty is also working on his stash of pecan. Really gorgeous bread platter- Here's his post along with a bunch of great comments- And speaking of pecan platters, @Gerald is putting the finishing touches on one he started several years ago. Gerald answers questions on this one in his post- A platter wasn't the only thing Gerald was turning. He was successful in turning a circular form, that when cut apart, created a specific silhouette. Almost no one succeeds the first time they try. When you learned to ride a bicycle, you fell. You got up and tried again, and again. You eventually learned how to ride a bicycle successfully. The first several dozen times I tried to make elegant finials for my turned-lidded boxes and fancy Christmas Ornaments, they broke or looked like I turned them with a hammer. But eventually, I figured it out. Now I can turn a fancy finial that approaches a Cindy Drozda class finial out of ebony or African Blackwood without worrying that it will fly into a million pieces before I’m done. That skill level took many failures before I was able to call myself a successful fancy finial turner. You can do it too. It just takes practice and experience. If you are willing to practice, nothing is beyond your reach. I’m encouraging you to pick yourself up and try again. Success will come if you don’t quit. I must be an inventor at heart because I love figuring out ways to solve common problems for woodturners. As a long-time woodturner, myself, I share the same difficulties and frustrations you do. Still looking for a couple of the smaller pieces. The other bowl , from the same log, had finished up in the kiln- When I rough turned it, I hadn't really decided what the final shape would be. When EWT released their beading cutter, I thought I could use this for a bit of practice. My practice pieces generally aren't sanded well, or finished. They usually just end up on a shelf or hold small parts. Mimi saw it and immediately gave it to one of her friends. Not real happy about it- could have been a lot nicer. I am really happy with the beading cutters. Very smooth finish with no chip out- at least on this mystery wood. Need to give them a real test on walnut and red oak. One thing EWT mentions is to increase the RPMs when cutting the beads. These were at about 2800. @Jordan Martindale Thinking about making a wall thickness gauge. The "figure 8" caliper I have is pretty large. On this one I used a simple bent wire and maybe that's all I need?? Safe turning

Nice little 3" snowfall this morning. Used the snowblower for the first time this winter. Our Patriot Turners- @Steve Krumanaker Showed us a really neat beading tool handle he made. The handle serves the normal handle function while turning but Steve also designed it to act as a storage place to protect the tip during transportation- Steve created a video of the build and posted it to his YouTube channel- Instead of just making a just a handle, @HandyDan made a complete beading tool! Dan details the tool fabrication and the operation in his post- Beading tools and bowls dominated our posts this past week. @HandyDan has been turning some little bowls and used his beading tool to decorate them! He shows us what he made in this post- @jthornton continues working on his popcorn bowls segments. Richard Raffan discusses it in this video- If you've been turning for awhile and thinking about moving up to a new lathe, Mike Peace has some things to consider- Expand Your Horizons- Richard Raffan discussed the procedure of twice turned bowls but bowls can be turned start to finish with "green" or wet wood. Alan Stratton turns this bowl and adds carved feet. Expand Your Horizons- It seem that more and more electronic devices are finding their way into wood turning. Personal lasers are becoming common place for embellishing and signatures. Finally was able to understand how the software works with help from a very knowledgeable gentleman in the software user's group. I found engraving signatures/dates on most items is pretty straight forward but rolling pins presented a challenge. I sign the rolling pins on one end. This needs the pin to be held vertically, be secure yet adjustable for focus. Started with a built up block and bored/turned a tapered hole The rolling pins are tapered so to hold them in place a couple of nylon screws to add pressure To allow for focus, the block had to adjust vertically, a couple of brackets with slots, wingnuts and washers I'm using my drill press table as a work surface, the addition of clamping pads to hold the jig to the to the table. First try on a rolling pin- I did get back to the lathe, too! When I did the Easy Wood Tools promotion at the Nittany Woodturners, they raffled off various items. I picked up a piece of black cherry burl and it has been taunting me ever since. Decided it would become a shallow bowl/platter. There is a void that I am not sure if I want to leave natural or fill with resin. This will be the top- The bottom- The void- Safe turning and stay well

Our Patriot Turners- @HandyDan gave us some great tips on reverse chucking a bowl when finishing off the bowl bottom- Dan explains his method in this post- @smitty10101 Posed a question about end grain tear out when turning a bowl. This started a great discussion on the various causes of tear out and how to minimize it. Check out Smitty's post for all the input- PLEASE CHECK THE "FOR THE NEWBIES" SECTION FOR ADDITIONAL REFERENCES ON END GRAIN TEAROUT Unfortunately, Smitty, could have used Dan's technique for revers chucking. His bowl became airborne and didn't fare too well- Our members offered some suggestions to help prevent this from happening again. @AndrewB turned a maple bowl. Braxton Wirthlin passed away from cancer. I copied and pasted this from Ruth Niles's newsletter: Our community suffered a tremendous loss last week when Braxton Wirthlin lost his battle with cancer. He was only 42 and left behind a wife (Melissa) and two small children. Father, husband, son, maker, and incredible friend to so many, Braxton was always willing to help, share, or lend a hand to anyone who needed it. As a gifted woodturner and maker, he inspired so many people and his joy and passion for the craft were evident to all who had the chance to interact with him. The woodturning community is both overcome with this loss, and overflowing with love for this man. Rest in Peace, Braxton. You are and will always be loved and your memory will be cherished forever.
