New Turning Items- A couple of weeks ago, we posted a video from Todd Raines demonstrating the Robust "Tru-Arc" tool. Sam Angelo gives us his impression of the tool in this video- Everything Else- I did an Easy Wood Tools demonstration for The Catoctin Area Turners' club last Thursday in Leesburg, VA. I thought @Gerald would be interested in their Beads of Courage boxes shown during the show and tell portion of their meeting Well the rolling pin blanks are finally finished- yesterday! The demo/workshop is this Saturday. 24 blanks here and 2 more at the workshop location. I make my blanks 22" long and 2 x 2" square. The lathes available for the workshop max out at 15" and 17" so angles had to be adjusted for a pleasing look when turned. Also some of the supplied blanks were smaller that 2 x 2 all that required different cutting angles. Some blanks were larger (almost 3 x 3) and my jig for cutting the angles wouldn't let the saw blade reach a high enough point to cut the proper insert slots. Had to design another jig for those blanks. Now on to Mimi's honey-do list that has been expanding exponentially! Safe turning

This popped up while I was writing this weeks "Wednesday's...". Last weeks woodturning videos from Rick Turns- Sometime back, @Gerald, commented that he was surprised I didn't have a vacuum chuck. Although I have considered adding one, up until today I've always been able to use my shop made chucks/jigs to hold any turning. I was tinkering with a glue-up and decided to try a square bowl. My new Jet lathe has a 16" swing and I decided to go as large as possible. That calculated out to be a square a little over 11" on a side. Reversed it and turned the "bowl". Then when I went to finish off the bottom- getting rid of the mortice- I discovered that my Cole jaws just weren't quite big enough. Same with my shop made Longworth chuck. Finally tried my oldest (first), large shop made chuck. Got it to fit but absolutely nothing to spare! Needs more sanding and some finish. Safe turning and stay well

Decided to see what could be found inside. I'm surprised that I could get this much. Sill a couple of cracks that will need taken care of At this point I normally submerge the piece in the soap and water solution for a couple of days and then on to drying in a paper bag with shavings. Turned out my pot is only 12" in diameter!. I CA'ed the cracks, wrapped the bowl in stretch wrap and put it in my little drying box (ala Rick Turns). Then for the cleanup! Safe turning and stay well

Walked down to the garden this morning and I see the garlic is starting to poke through the leaf mulch. I guess spring can't be too far away. Don't forget to turn your clocks forward this Saturday night or you will be late to Sunday School! Our Patriot Turners- @Gerald took some time to rearrange his turning area. No easy feat and he will probably looking for where he put stuff for some time to come! Our members all sympathized with the amount of work required to do this. You can see their comments in Gerald's post- @Masonsailor Took a break from his media room redo and played on the lathe. Paul decided to turn a Top and it's a beauty. Our turners had lots of questions and comments about how the hardware and his processes. Check out Paul's post, here- A couple of weeks ago @Bob Hodge was asking about wet sanding techniques and products. Well, Bob made the leap and he tells us about his results. We appreciate Bob's follow-up and giving us his findings- @RustyFN Tried his hand at segmented turning. He said it was his first time at this but judging from the results, I have to wonder . As you might expect, the kudos were flying for this beauty! Rusty also gave us an insight into some of his processes for cutting the segments- In one of our other forums, Rusty shared his lumber score. You know some guys can fall in "it" and come out smelling like a rose. That's our Rusty!! Just look at what he picked up! He already has it broken down into turning blanks! A little more on his good luck here- @AndrewB is working on another pepper grinder. He is turning this one from Bhilwara. It is a beautiful wood and should look awesome on the table! Geeze, September already! Pretty busy week here for our Patriot turners Our Patriot Turners- @Smallpatch posted this in another forum but it directly applies to everyone turner here. THINK SAFETY!!! @PatriotWoodturning showed us some of the beautiful bowls he has turned- Check out his posts to see more of his fantastic work! And speaking of bowls, @PatriotWoodturning gave us a look at his method of drying his bowl blanks. Our turners added their thoughts to his post- @Gerald is working on a gorgeous natural edge vessel. Gerald shows us what he started with and a little about the project. Our members had some questions about the finish and Gerald provided his thoughts. @Gunny added a practical project, he turned, to last week's "Wednesday's..." Always nice when you can make something better than the original. @AndrewB turned a small gobblet from a glued up blank. What made this different was Andrew uses a pen mandrel to hold the piece. Andrew included a couple of videos to document his progress. Our turners were not sure this was the best way to hold the work. You can check out their responses in Andrew's post. @AndrewB also showed us his birch bowl project. Andrew includes a progress video in his post Several members offered advice on getting a smooth surface to reduce the need for aggressive sanding. Pretty good explanation of using the bowl gouge and reducing tearout. I really have difficulty when it comes to turning things that have a pleasing shape. Creating something that doesn't remind me of a neanderthal rock bowl is my achilles heel. Ernie Conover put together a short video showing various bowl shapes as an aid to developing an eye for more desirable pieces. Expand Your Horizons- Our buddy Tim Yoder is really turning THIN! He explains how it's done in this video- Holding your work on the lathe sometimes requires some imagination. Mike Peace explains the use of jam chucks and friction chucks- New Turning Items- Using an electric drill for lathe sanding is OK but sometime it just doesn't permit access to every angle. The drills can be heavy and tiresome to use. I just ordered one of these and looking forward to trying it out. 50 years ago, I started teaching at the local Vocational School. After retiring, I continued to substitute for another 17 years. This year I finally decided to officially retire. We'll see how it goes. Our Patriot Turners- Last week, @Artie posted about his new toys he won in our raffle and asked about any additional equipment he needed to get started. Tha post generated a lot of great ideas. But @Cliff added something very important about lathe speed and safety- From Cliff's post, I found this article- Yamaguchi_SafetyMatters.pdf @Ron Altier reworked his "canary in a cage". Ron describes what changes he made in this post- @PostalTom got a beautiful new bowl gouge! Tom reviews his purchase in his post along with a minor problem. Our turners really jumped in to help him out! Both @Gerald and @HandyDan provided links to instructional videos on bowl gouge use- @FlGatorwood has authored an fantastic blog that every Shopsmith owner should checkout. Each turner presented a demonstration highlighting their talents. It's happening again! This time they have more presenters and the entire program is spread out over 16 hours on Saturday August 22. This is a very informative video on how to "fix" improperly ground bowl gouges. I think it might be just what I need- Expand Your Horizons- A lot of us are getting to the age where we need to take medications on a regular basis. Mike Peace turns a nice little pill holder. I think it will also work for hearing aid batteries- Stabilizing soft/punky wood has typically called for a vacuum chamber/pressure pot and a stabilizing liquid. I have relied on StarBond CA glue to harden/stabilize turnings due to the lack of that equipment . It has always worked pretty good although it can be expensive if the piece is large. Here is another method of stabilizing without the aid of vacuum/pressure. The author uses a 2 part acrylic and acetone to make a solution that soaks into the wood. The mixing instructions start at about 3:15 in the video- I sent a message to the folks at Alumilite to ask their opinion. Their response was that they had never tried it. New Turning Items- The folks at Woodturners Wonders have a couple of new items- First, their sanding bundle- Second is a new lubricant. This one is suited for use on their CBN wheels- Click on the images for the links to these products. Everything Else- Rick Turns video list from last week- Haven't been to the lathe this week- making rolling pin blanks. Lots of stock milled and the glue-ups started. Each pin requires 4 individual glue-ups and trims before they go to the lathe. Second step in glue-up waiting for trimming Trimmed pins dadoed and waiting on third glue-up One in the clamps; one hour wait. Safe turning and stay well

I probably should know this, but I don't, so here goes. Assume that I am out "yard-saling", and I come across a gouge. How do I tell if it is a spindle gouge or a bowl gouge? Are the differences in the flutes, the grind, the shape of the point or business end? Does the gouge start out as a generic gouge, and then gets assigned it's identity based on the grind? Maybe more to the point, to save everyone typing their fingers off, is there an accepted resource, such as a book or DVD, that would give me this information? I don't have a specific gouge in mind that I am trying to identify, this is just for general information for now. Thanks.
