Some good tips about the size of a tenon vs. the diameter of the piece- Mike also has some thoughts on purchasing kits- A hint from Tim Yoder about retaining those beautiful colors in your turnings- Are there little ones in your family? Sam Angelo shows how to create some simple turnings that could become favorite toys. Expand Your Horizons- You pulled that bowl round off the shelf and discovered it had a nasty split, now what! Here's what Richard Raffan does- Got the outside turned and starting to hollow out the inside and then this! What would you do? Tenon or mortice?? How about neither! Mike Waldt's video short of turning a large platter illustrates the strength of hot glue! New Turning Items- Several of the vendor attendees to SWAT did a live video showing much of what was happening and is available for viewing. I did catch one unique item from Niles Stoppers. Audio is a little off. https://streamyard.com/watch/8dzBZqCXEzpu A couple of weeks ago, we posted a new item from Ron Brown- the lathe disk sander. Ron has since added a short video of its operation- Woodturners Wonders is now handling Crown Tools. Check out more at- https://woodturnerswonders.com/search?type=article%2Cpage%2Cproduct&q=crown* tools*&_kx=gV5SF2As_3IwtBi5TrpHVQM0F3UvGVbQKzhWGippDlk%3D.VJvU8R Everything Else- From Ron Brown's newsletter- I Meant To Do That! Show-and-tell is an important element at any gathering of craft people, turners included. I implemented a guideline at the Gwinnett Woodworker’s regular Saturday morning meetings: "Don’t point out flaws.” If it isn’t blatantly obvious, don’t talk about it. Stay positive and share what you enjoyed about making this piece and possibly what you might have learned. In an attempt to appear humble, we sometimes point out our shortcomings or mistakes so we won’t appear to brag about what we’ve accomplished. You put in the time, energy, and effort to create something you are proud of. Don’t diminish it by pointing out the smallest of mistakes. One of our members was describing his piece which was very impressive by the way, he mentioned what became known as “the hanging hole.” None of us could see it, folks asked him to show us what he meant because it was so minor that even if you saw his mistake, you wouldn’t think anything of it. Most of the pieces woodturners make are unique because the wood's character can vary dramatically. Often there is no standard for comparison. If your piece didn’t turn out exactly like you intended, don’t be disappointed, be proud of what you did accomplish. Mistakes Can Be An Opportunity For An Object Lesson! A famous highly skilled local woodturner was demonstrating hollow forms when he suddenly pierced the vessel's side. Rather than giving up, he brilliantly used this turn of events as an object lesson on what to do with the remaining material. If you have never come through the bottom of a bowl or through the side of a hollow form, just wait, you will sooner or later. It’s a little more difficult when you do it in front of 30 other turners! Things are rarely perfect and yet most are still beautiful. Only someone lacking wisdom would criticize your work and point out small flaws. Don’t be easily offended and don’t do it yourself; that can lead to false humility. You’ve put in the work and practiced for untold hours, sometimes years, to gain your specific skill set. In other words, you’ve earned it Safe turning

We were in the midst of the famous "Pennsylvania January Thaw" but winter returned today. Cold and windy with a few flurries. Our Patriot Turners were busy this past week producing some gorgeous objects. @Steve Krumanaker Created a beautiful maple bowl with the help of Mother Nature- See Steve's post and the comments he received here- Steve also made a fantastic display holder. This one is destined to hold humming birds but he also uses this type of display to show his turned ornaments. You can see more images and additional information at in his post at While on the subject of turned ornaments, @Ron Altier is getting a jump on next year! This is his latest creation Ron answered questions about the piece in his post- @HandyDan Made some more Tops. He talks about some difficulties he had and what he did to resolve the problem. Read his post and see what material he found works perfectly for these little toys- Our friends and a most generous Patriot sponsor, Easy Wood Tools ( @Jim from Easy Wood Tools ) shared a video by Carl Jacobson on making a hybrid resin art piece. Carl uses the Easy Wood Tools to create this beautiful project. I've been experimenting with the Alumilite casting resin. Lots of possibilities but I'll need to add some specialized equipment if I want to make casting without imperfections. Tim Yoder posted a new video on making a dead blow mallet. What is really cool are the materials/methods Tim used. He creates his own thread chase and die for the project. Check out the Easy Wood Chuck, too! We always try to post the latest Rick Turns, video for the month's woodturning videos. Rick posted a summary of 2017 on YouTube- Last week I mentioned I was playing with a piece of Manzanita. The piece had a void that I was afraid would separate during turning. I wanted to fill the void with Alumilite and then complete the turning. You may remember I sealed the piece with modeling clay to create a barrier to contain the liquid casting resin. That turned out not to be such a good idea. The clay did contain the resin but it was nearly impossible to remove all of the clay from the nooks and crannies of the wood. I ended up using a heat gun (on low) to melt the pieces of remaining clay and air pressure to blast out the liquid clay. (Note to self: wear an apron so you don't ruin another sweatshirt). This process is certainly going to affect the type of finish I'll be able to use. On the positive side, the casting resin is holding the piece together. I sanded everything to 4000. That's great for the wood but the resin needs to go to 12000. I have the micromesh pads and I'll need to do the final sanding by hand. I think the finished piece will make a nice change/key holder or a place for extra paper clips. Safe Turning

First Wednesday in November already and K-Mart has had their Christmas displays out for 3 weeks. It did serve to remind me that I need to get my butt in gear and get those Christmas presents made. I recently watched a video from Carl Jacobson. It is #5 in his series- "Back To Basics". In this one he discusses a sharpening jig for the grinder. Although his is a commercial version, it is not too difficult to create a shop made jig that can do the same thing. He also mentions the Abranet sanding mesh. I have been using this product myself and really like it. The video also includes the creation of a seam ripper handle as Mr. Jacobson demonstrates several cutting methods. Some of our readers may be just starting out as turners. There are always questions about setting up an area for turning. Woodworker's Journal has put up an article by Ernie Conover in which he addresses some of these questions. You can read the entire article here- http://www.woodworkersjournal.com/setting-turning-shop/ Over the past several "Wednesday's.." we have been featuring Patriot Turners. One of our most prolific turners, and previously featured- Ron Altier has posted more of his work. Check out Ron's latest batch of projects- http://thepatriotwoodworker.com/profile/3488-ron-altier/. At Ron's house the Christmas spirit is alive and well all year long. For myself, I did get a little time at the lathe. This will be a Christmas present for some friends of ours. Chips and cheese serving dish made from walnut. It still needs some more sanding and a finish. I think I'll highlight the textured accent surface with acrylic paint to compliment the marble tile. The bottom foot will need to be finished as well- Safe Turning-
