Hard to believe that April is almost over! Our Patriot Turners- One of our long time forum members @Mark Wilson posted a couple of his projects. First is a beautiful natural edge walnut bowl Mark's post has some progress shots! Mark also posted some cool screwdriver handles! This gorgeous goblet is for his club's President Challenge. Steve explains more in his post- Steve also works with a local gift shop. He turns custom lids for one of their products. Check his post to see where these beauties are used. A while back, @jthornton told us he was working on a "dizzy bowl". He got a chance to post his progress- More images in the addition to his original post- @HandyDan continues to amaze us with his tiny turnings. This week he used some really old red wood. Expand Your Horizons- Last week we posted a video from Alan Stratton on making inside out turnings. One of his turnings had a flame shape. This video takes us through how that turning was done. Mike Waldt turns a beautiful cherry vase from a log- If you add carved embellishments to any of your turnings, a carving stand can be invaluable. Finish turning a roughed out little elm bowl. Still experimenting with the Easy Wood Tools beading cutters @Jordan Martindale. Tried to make the bead, at the lip of the bowl, set centered on the rim. The outside and top of the bead was pretty straight forward. To turn the inside portion, I had to run the lathe in reverse to get the proper angle on the tool. My lathe sets against a wall so access for turning is only from the front. Came out OK for my first try. A smaller bead as a foot sorta carries the theme from top to bottom. Safe turning

Wood turning club meeting is coming up and the presidents challenge this month is to turn a goblet from scrap or cutoffs. This will be my offering. No finish on it and not sure if I will finish it. It's small, only about 6" tall, kind of a shot goblet I guess. In keeping with the theme to use leftovers the top is made from the pieces left in the chuck from turning the goblet. Beads were done with D-way beading tools.

Snowing a little outside but tomorrow it's to be 70°! You gotta love Pennsylvania weather! Our Patriot Turners- @forty_caliber gave us a heads up on a very worthwhile endeavor for kids suffering from life altering conditions. Good or bad, you are the only one exactly like you. But what if you are an identical twin, or have found your doppelganger, what are you going to do with that information? You are still unique with your own combination of gifts, abilities, and talents. There is a famous parable about servants who were given different talents in Matt 25:14-30 that would serve us well. The lesson is not how many talents each of us has but what we do with the talents we are given. You may have many more talents than I do, but what are you doing with those talents? I sometimes watched various turning demonstrators thinking “I could do a better job than that guy.” But he or she was the one up there doing it and I was the one with my butt in the chair not doing it. I used to have the same reaction to certain YouTube videos. But they were the ones showing the world what they had learned and I was the couch potato watching them do it. You might be thinking that you don’t have a creative mind or know where to start. I have some suggestions that will catapult you to great and wonderful things. 1) Consider an existing item. a. Make a larger version b. Make a smaller version c. Use it for something totally different that what it was designed for d. Add capabilities by adding some new features to an existing item 2) Consider an existing challenge like roughing down a spindle or a bowl blank a. Use a different tool to make it easier, faster, safer i. Have you ever brought a spindle square to round with a skew? ii. Have you ever ground your own negative rake scraper from scratch? iii. Have you ever made your own parting tool from an industrial hack saw blade? iv. Have you ever ground a miniature hollowing tool from an Allen wrench and fabricated your own handle? You’ve heard the expression “Don’t reinvent the wheel.” My suggestion is to take an existing wheel and make it better. Everyone has ideas for how something can be a little bit better. I know because you tell me those things about my tools frequently. Start today, and remember that wherever you go, there you are. Safe turning

Middle of February and it was 70° today in South Central PA! Our Patriot Turners- @Thad posted an image of a garden tool he turned. These are really handy for anyone planting both garden veggies and flower bulbs- Check out the comments at Thad's post- Last week, @RustyFN told us about the turned boxes he had made. Everything Else- Rick Turns list of YouTube woodturning videos from last week- and from Ron Brown- If You Never Try, You Will Never Know Have you been turning for 5, 10, 20 years, or longer? You are just beginning to understand the fascinating craft of woodturning. This might make more sense if I used the analogy of someone who had one year’s experience twenty times. Think of it like this, a baker who only makes one kind of bread over and over might be pretty good at making that one kind of bread but most folks wouldn’t consider him much of a baker. While someone who makes several different kinds of delicious bread, bagels, cakes, pies, and muffins would be considered a thoroughly accomplished baker. I’m not suggesting you give up making what you love, only that you add other types of projects into the mix. That is how you keep our craft alive, interesting, and growing. Or, just consider adding embellishments this time such as pyrography, carving, texturing, or painting. Besides, the skills you learn by turning something different often carry over and make you even better at turning what you love. I’ve met scores of folks who make mostly bowls who ventured out with spinning tops, bottle stoppers, pepper mills, pens, and hollow forms and discovered a completely new passion. I would like to suggest you try a few different kinds of projects this year. You might just be surprised at what you learn. If you are mainly a bowl-turner, try some spindle projects. If you are mainly a spindle turner, try some plates, platters, bowls, and hollow forms. I can tell you from experience that it takes making more than a few to understand your new project. I’ve made somewhere over 10,000 spinning tops and it took a few hundred before I started to “Get It.” Fancy delicate finials were the same way. I’ve made hundreds for Christmas ornaments, turned lidded boxes, and lidded hollow forms. Looking back at the first ones, they now seem clunky and disproportionate but they were fun and educational, well worth my time and effort. Besides, having an arsenal of quick easy projects that you are good at is a great way to demonstrate turning to the public, or to introduce someone new to woodturning as a fascinating hobby or side business for a little extra income. Always be on the lookout to show someone how fun a wood lathe can be. Keep it simple and they will understand. Remember that wherever you go, there you are. Safe turning

June 1 and it's 95° in the shade on the back deck! Our Patriot Turners- @RustyFN let us in on a new finish he is trying- Several members expressed interest in more information. @Gerald added a post in the "Finishing Forum" that expanded on some of the ideas from what Rusty posted- What’s Coming Up- Pretty much caught up on all that is happening. This is the first time since Covid started that the AAW is having an in person symposium. https://www.woodturner.org/Woodturner/2022Chattanooga/2022-AAW-Symposium---Chattanooga--Tennessee.aspx?_zs=ceDib&_zl=uos73 For The Newbies- @Gerald added an interesting comment to last week's "Wednesday's..." concerning the types of screws used for fastening faceplates and faceplate rings to a turning. My favorite mounting procedure is similar but using the transparent device. Also, for marking the holes, I found that a #3 Vix-Bit drill center fits perfectly in the mounting holes of all of the Easy Wood Tools faceplates and rings. Mostly I use a oval head screw, as they have a little more "meat" around the drive slots. For smaller turnings, I may use a flathead screw Mike Peace has a nice video on bowl gouge sharpening- I've seen some nice instructional videos from Jim Echter. In the video, he demonstrates his ELBO 2 hollowing ring. One more from Alan Stratton on goblets. Several interesting jigs for us "jig junkies"- New Turning Items- Couldn't find anything interesting this week. Hopefully, there will be some new products shown at the AAW Symposium in a couple of weeks! Everything Else- Rick Turns list of YouTube woodturning videos from last week- I've been using up some scrap white oak cutoffs to make some simple platters. All of my large shop make holders were designed around my old 14" Delta lathe. The new Jet is 16" and now I need some way to hold the pieces for reverse chucking. I could go the vacuum chuck route, but I'm "frugal to a fault". I love my Easy Wood Tools Cole jaws. Seemed a fairly simple task to make a set of extensions. Not quite perfect, but they work! The holders are from the smaller jigs I had. If I weren't so stubborn, this platter should have gone into the trash. The defect wasn't nearly as noticeable until most of the material was removed. as I tried to get into more solid wood, the bottom got really thin and weak- especially where the oak was soft. Added CA and some Alumilite resin to reinforce the weak area but was not enough. I have an idea on rescuing it but need to allow the finish to dry and harden before attempting it. Safe turning

He continues to refine the process as shown in this video- A short tip from Lyle Jamieson on the use of the "Pull Cut" with a bowl gouge- Expand Your Horizons- Mike Peace demonstrates turning a Holly box with lid. He adds some beautiful pyrographic embellishments- Many woodturners get requests to turn cremation urns. In this video, Carl demonstrates their use in more detail as well as their new chuck drive centers- These are both excellent products and of the quality we have come to expect from Easy Wood Tools. I guess some turners are able to do it "by eye", but my eye isn't calibrated very accurately. I've seen (and made) a couple of devices to aid in the centering but they all relied on getting a sharp point to set into a depression. When I got my EWT face plate rings, I decided to make a different centering device. Turned a wooden prototype to be used as a casting model. Then made a silicon mold from the model. Then used clear Alumilite resin for the centering device. The blank cut and the center marked with sharpie- A face plate ring and the centering device- The centering device dropped into the faceplate ring- The larger black dot is the Sharpie mark on the wood and the smaller black dot is the center of the device. My faceplate ring is too far to the left of center Now it's centered and I can mark the holes to mount the ring. There is an small rare earth magnet cast in the resin to hold the device in the faceplate. Which also works great to hold it on the lathe when not in use- ...and for those who argue that carbide tools only scrape and not cut- Air dried white oak more than50 years old! Safe turning

Beautiful day today, 67° and sunny. Tomorrow, winter weather advisory. Ahh, spring time in PA. Our Patriot Turners- @BillyJack asked our members for input on some turning tools. Several gave their recommendations on what he might consider. I hope he posts the tools he gets so we can all drool over his choices! @Gerald gave us a look at some of the turnings that were done at the last club meeting. Gerald posted several more images of turnings that were done during the demonstration. Gerald said their guest demonstrator was Matt Monaco. Can't really come up with any ideas that stir my turning juices. Thought maybe there was a scrap of cherry down behind the garden shed but when I cut into the carpenter ants had converted it into a summer resort. There was a small piece of Chinese elm crotch there. Cut it round and mounted it on the lathe Got the chance to finally use the present I bought myself a month or so ago, I know, it's like a Rolls Royce hood emblem on a Ford, but hey... Started an ogee type shape on the outside Created the mortice- When I re-chucked it, I didn't think the ogee looked so nice and modified it slightly Hollowed it out- I decided to turn this to finish thickness and let it dry/warp Added a clamp around the perimeter to lessen the warping- The clamp fell off over night. Warping has commenced and a crack has opened up where a bark inclusion was located. Safe turning and stay well

Okay so I picked up some poplar this morning I wanted to make two poplar bowls. I bought a 4 1/2 ' x 8" x 3/4" board of poplar this morning. I was able to get two bowl blanks out of it. I'm decisive on what to make out of the scrap. I've got the left over pieces that I haven't thrown out because I knew I could make something out of them either way any suggestions from you guys on what I should do with the scraps. I've got enough to either turn a mug or a goblet not sure on what I should create. I also got my shop area organized a lot better so its not an absolute mess so that's a good feeling.

Yes, I realize it is Thursday. But in my defense- I had this entire post written last evening and just before it was to be submitted- it disappeared. Our Patriot Turners- @Gerald showed us the progress he was making on a beautiful piece of cherry burl- a gift from his son. Geral certainly did this piece of wood proud! @AndrewBis not one to sit around and waste time. He posted several projects he is working. First is a birch bowl. Andrew is really applying the suggestions you all have been providing and it shows in this piece. He is also working on a cup and a goblet- Finally, Andrew started on a fantastic looking piece of exotic wood (Bhilwara). Can't wait to see this when the finish hits it! A while back we were discussing finishes. There were several posts this week on that topic. First, @Ron Altier asked us about a home brew finish he read about. Our members had lots of input on this one. Another post dealt with oil and wax finishes. @AndrewB was curious about using sesame seed oil and beeswax. The type of oil used with this mixture must be carefully chosen to avoid it becoming rancid. @Gerald suggested using Walnut oil as a finish. Walnut oil, specifically formulated for this purpose, is food safe and will not create a problem for users with food allergies. "Rick Turns" posted a video on turning a vase. In that video, he uses the reverse turning technique. Expand Your Horizons- We have been looking for ways to make a wooden vessel waterproof. You won't meet a nicer person than Ruth. This past week some A**H*le hacked her Instagram account and set up a scam in her name. The scammer is impersonating her and advertising a seminar for turners. This is not Ruth! I played along with the scam to find out more. You register ( used fake info) by email. They tell you to buy a Nike gift card for $100. Then send them a photo of the card numbers so they can register you. As Ruth said, it is doubtful anyone would fall for that but she is really worried about her business reputation. Please spread the word that this is a scam and Ruth has no part in it. Thanks! So looking around in the house I found some more material. I had glue up four turning blanks that I had forgotten about... How ever unfortunately they didn't glue completely evenly they are solid but there is a nice little crack in the middle of two blanks. I'm currently turning on it. It seems to be holding up so far. But I am up in ears for suggestions on how to take care of this crack I do have my alumilite resin still plenty of it left. I'm wondering if that would be a better option of once I get to a point is hold off and fill the holes with the resin and then continue to carve but I am completely unsure. I do plan on turning this one out completely. I'm starting off with the live center bits instead of the face plate giving that another go as well. I am recording this one as well. I can't remember what kind of wood this is I'm working with but I'm assuming that its oak wood it feels like oak at least to me. Either way here is a shot of what I've done so far with it. I've rounded it out and I'm going to start shaping the cup. Just not sure how to seal that space because I would like to keep this one.

This is a wedding ring (captive ring) goblet I just did recently. Basically was trying out a captive ring tool I made based on a Mike Peace video. The tool worked very well and maybe the easiest ring I have done yet.
