Memorial Day weekend is coming up. Let us never forget the ultimate sacrifice given by our service members to keep us free.

Hey gang, don't forget, we are into our site fundraising raffle. We started off like gangbusters but we have a long way to go! If you haven't already purchased your tickets, please consider checking out the fantastic prizes! All the proceeds from this fundraiser go to the operating costs of this site.

Our Patriot Turners-

If you are a regular reader, you will remember @RustyFN purchased a Record Power lathe sometime back. One of his concerns during his investigation of various manufactures was customer service after purchase. Well, Rusty got a pleasant surprise this past week!

Rusty isn't letting any dust grow on that new lathe, either! his week he showed us his latest turning- a gorgeous turned, lidded box.

Rusty has more images in his post-

@Ron Altier proves once again that "necessity is the mother of invention". Ron solved a problem most all of us have faced while trying to mow the lawn on a sunny day-

Check his post to see what Ron made on his lathe-

@Gerald was kind enough to add images of some of his turnings to the Patriot site albums. His designs and embellishments are impeccable-

Everything Else-

I've been in a real creative slump lately. Can't really come up with any ideas that stir my turning juices. Thought maybe there was a scrap of cherry down behind the garden shed but when I cut into the carpenter ants had converted it into a summer resort.

There was a small piece of Chinese elm crotch there.

Cut it round and mounted it on the lathe

Got the chance to finally use the present I bought myself a month or so ago, I know, it's like a Rolls Royce hood emblem on a Ford, but hey...

Started an ogee type shape on the outside

Created the mortice-

When I re-chucked it, I didn't think the ogee  looked so nice and modified it slightly

IMG_1135.jpeg.4b00b75f01ed1dea3216725af65fc16c.jpeg

Hollowed it out-

IMG_1136.jpeg.84b2b88358c80d50889459b308524478.jpeg

I decided to turn this to finish thickness and let it dry/warp

IMG_1137.jpeg.677b769241e17a07bc42ae38bc2541f3.jpeg

Added a clamp around the perimeter to lessen the warping-

IMG_1138.jpeg.33828e194671319d52281f8270e95eb8.jpeg

The clamp fell off over night. Warping has commenced and a crack has opened up where a bark inclusion was located.

Safe turning and stay well

X2

another nice post @lew late to the party on this again.  The bowl turned out nicely.  Almost looks like spalted maple with the grain pattern even though its not.

Thanks Lew. Great post.

Thanks for the spotlight. I can see you need some good wood. Nice grain patterns in the bowl. When you said clamp I was afraid something was going to give. Have only had any luck with those clamps for segmented pieces and those are dry wood.

@lew, this is a really nice post and some really good work posted here.

Regarding your bowl, I am surprised to see that it did not crack along the pith lines.  I have some pecan cracking.  I am cutting it into sections and will use some for ornaments.  Thanks, Lew.

Running a little late this week-

@HandyDan Thank You!

@Cal Thanks!

@AndrewB Thank You! I was surprised at the amount of spalting for the amount of time it spent on the ground.

@RustyFN Thanks!

@Gerald Thank You! Funny about the good wood. A lady from school contacted me to make a bowl. Her husband cut down a box elder. Gonna get some for her project.
The clamp wasn’t a complete failure but didn’t work as well as I had hoped.

@FlGatorwood Thanks! Sorry to hear about the pecan. I think I can add some sort of adornment to this one to accent the fissure.
