May 19, 20224 yr Well the month of May is is just past the mid point and warmer weather has arrived here in south central PA. The last of the dogwood blossoms are finally done, time to sweep the deck! Our Patriot Turners- @RustyFN started a thread in the CNC forum on laser engravers. I thought it would be informative to add it here as many of our turners us lasers to embellish their work. If you have an engraver, why not hop over to Rust's post and give him your thoughts. Rusty's post on the cherry wood he scored has continued to get comments and suggestions. You can catch up on all the comments from the beginning here- @Ron Altier tried out a different method for coloring his ornaments. Several of our turners provided ideas for Ron. Check out what they had to say here- What’s Coming Up- The "Art of Turning" has posted a calendar of their upcoming events. Follow this link for what is currently scheduled- https://www.artofturning.com/?mc_cid=7a51a19551&mc_eid=480d9e65bf From the AAW Click on the above image for the link to registration. For The Newbies- A nice video from Mike Peace delving into the bowl gouge- Alan Stratton shows us more on making goblets- I liked his version of the steady rest so much, I made one for myself. The ability to install/remove the steady without having to move the tailstock is really a nice feature. Expand Your Horizons- Rusty's inquiry on laser engravers coincided with this presentation from Cap'n Eddie.- Sam Angelo has a different take on designing salt and pepper cellars. Mike Waldt did a live presentation of a three piece goblet. A little long but Mike answers questions and describes techniques throughout the presentation. New Turning Items- We mentioned, last week, Easy Wood Tools ( @Jim from Easy Wood Tools ) released two new products. Both items really does make turning more efficient by not having to always remove your chuck to mount different types of turning blanks. Carl Jacobson demonstrated the face plate rings in a video we posted. What we didn't see was one of the chuck drive spurs. I ordered the steb type drive spur and it came this past week. I really prefer this type of drive center for the type of turning I do. Easy Wood Tools never disappoints when it comes to quality. The very first thing I noticed was how heavy it was. Comparing the EWT to my old M2 center- The EWT center is noticeably heavier. It is also slightly bigger in diameter (EWT on the left) The center mounts securely in the chuck regardless of the jaws installed. The center extend out past the jaws for clearance but has plenty of "meat" to provide stability. The centering point is spring loaded and retracts into the center when pressure is applied with the tailstock. Ruth Niles has a new, really cool, bottle stopper blank available in her store- https://nilesbottlestoppers.com/product/honeycomb-resin-blank/ Ruth also has the Joyner Off Center Jig on sale https://nilesbottlestoppers.com/product/joyner-off-set-complete-kit/ Everything Else- Rick Turns list of YouTube woodturning videos from last week- Safe turning
