One thing that should be noted is that all Easy Wood products are made right here in the good ol' U. S. of A. However, some of the best prices can be found by cruising their social media pages for special sales from woodworking retailers i.e. Woodcraft etc. For the month of June, a few - If you are thinking about attending the St. Paul, MN symposium, Easy Wood Tools will be well represented- And another shameless self promotion- @Jordan Martindale New Turning Items- Everything Else- From Ron Brown's Newsletter: Good Enough Perfection is often unattainable, and just as frequently, unnecessary. I hear from turners all the time who proudly sand salad bowls to 4,000 grit. Anything above 320 grit is just a waste of time and effort for most wood projects. However, acrylic and resin projects may well benefit from using abrasives up to 12,000 grit. The caution here is not to get bogged down in the last 2 percent trying to make something perfect when 98 percent of the work is very close to perfection and Good Enough. When I used to build custom furniture from cherry, walnut, oak, and hardwood plywood, I quickly discovered that stopping at 220 grit produced excellent results. Especially when covered by sanding sealer and pre-catalyzed lacquer as finishes. It’s true, sometimes less is more. The secret was to be careful with each finer sanding grit, ensuring that all scratches from the coarser grit were entirely removed. That is where patience really pays off, as I deliberately go over the entire surface, then examine my work with a raking light source before moving up to the next finer grit. Most folks don’t realize that excessive sanding with fine-grit paper creates heat that releases and then hardens the lignin in wood, often resulting in a splotchy finish. The finishing material will not be able to penetrate the surface evenly, and it looks awful. If you’ve ever blown up a bowl, it usually comes from making one last cut to get the finish just right and the walls as thin as possible. You forgot that wood moves and bowls can go out of round as you turn, even if they’ve been drying for months. As wood is removed, the moisture content can change, causing the thin walls to warp, or harmonic vibration to set in. That final cut produces an unexpected catch and bang! Fresh bowl pieces are lying around the shop once again. The problem with patience is that it takes so long. My projects rarely turn out exactly like I see them in my mind. My hope is to bring them close to my idea of perfection and bring them to the “Good Enough” stage of completion. I know some of you think I’m smarter than I actually am. What you see are the results of persistence, patience, and starting over many times before I was able to show you a finished version. You will never see the eight failures that came before. Remember how WD-40 got its name. I would rather have you do something slowly and well than do it quickly and poorly, sometimes referred to as Half-Fast. Many years ago, I got tired of hearing myself say “Oops! I didn’t see that before, and now it’s too late to fix it.” I am deliberate in my inspections before proceeding to the next step. It is always easier to fix it then, rather than several steps later. Safe turning

I have used the paste with and without the sanding sealer. It produces and amazing surface! He is working to put together a JaHo jig. From the video in his post, it looks like an awesome device to add incredible embellishments to turned pieces. There was some of that wind shake cherry left, so I decided to play a little. I have a set of Easy Wood Tools Mini Hollowers as well as a set of mid-sized hollowers. Used some of each to make these. I think the one on the right should have had a smaller diameter "neck". I didn't make any real effort to finish them- just some sanding. Safe turning jhdgfj

Birds chirping, sun shining, grass is green here in south central PA- probably snow tomorrow! Our Patriot Turners- @jthornton Posted a question about dust collection for his lathe. He posted pictures of his shop along with a description of what he currently has set. Please check his post and see if you can offer any suggestions to help him. JT continues to work on his "Dizzy Bowl". He has taken a lot of time to document the steps a and share the progress with us- You can catch up with his continued progress here- @Masonsailor finished up the bowl that will be the prize in his neighborhood's get-together. Notice the use of the jam chuck which will be talked about more in Cindy Drozda's presentation. Another toothpick holder with a unique shape. Some spindle work and a little hollowing from Carl Jacobson- Expand Your Horizons- Alan Stratton continues to add Celtic Knots to his turnings. This time he experiments with a bowl. Embellishing a turning with color can turn an ordinary piece into something spectacular. This one from Craft Supplies USA on dying- Ebonizing may only be a single color but it can add striking effects to a turning. Hard to believe that April is almost over! Our Patriot Turners- One of our long time forum members @Mark Wilson posted a couple of his projects. First is a beautiful natural edge walnut bowl Mark's post has some progress shots! Mark also posted some cool screwdriver handles! This gorgeous goblet is for his club's President Challenge. Steve explains more in his post- Steve also works with a local gift shop. He turns custom lids for one of their products. Finish turning a roughed out little elm bowl. Still experimenting with the Easy Wood Tools beading cutters @Jordan Martindale. Tried to make the bead, at the lip of the bowl, set centered on the rim. The outside and top of the bead was pretty straight forward. To turn the inside portion, I had to run the lathe in reverse to get the proper angle on the tool. My lathe sets against a wall so access for turning is only from the front. Came out OK for my first try. A smaller bead as a foot sorta carries the theme from top to bottom. Safe turning

The little calabash bowl looks pretty good, at first glance, from this angle From here, not so much- Got in a hurry and didn't change the EWT square cutter to the square R2 cutter I would normally use to finish off the outside. Still looking for a couple of the smaller pieces. The other bowl , from the same log, had finished up in the kiln- When I rough turned it, I hadn't really decided what the final shape would be. When EWT released their beading cutter, I thought I could use this for a bit of practice. My practice pieces generally aren't sanded well, or finished. They usually just end up on a shelf or hold small parts. Mimi saw it and immediately gave it to one of her friends. Not real happy about it- could have been a lot nicer. I am really happy with the beading cutters. Very smooth finish with no chip out- at least on this mystery wood. Need to give them a real test on walnut and red oak. One thing EWT mentions is to increase the RPMs when cutting the beads. These were at about 2800. @Jordan Martindale Thinking about making a wall thickness gauge. The "figure 8" caliper I have is pretty large. On this one I used a simple bent wire and maybe that's all I need?? Safe turning

Well, last Wednesday in September. Hasn't been a great week, maybe a new month will chase away Mr. Murphy. Our Patriot Turners- @Gerald had some misfortune while turning a hollow form- He was looking for some suggestions on how to have the repair enhance the turning. Check out his post and see if you can offer any ideas- @bradleyheathhays is looking for suggestions on which type of bowl scraper to buy. Several of our turners added their thoughts; what are yours @Masonsailor turned some items for his reloading area. He shows us more of what he did in this post- A week or so ago @Gerald posted about a jam chuck. We are still getting input and inquiries about the chuck. If you made that chuck, please add your input to the conversation- I made a post asking for recommendations on air filtration masks. I really appreciate the input. I haven't decided on the route I want to take. I subscribe to the Alton Brown philosophy that every item should be a multitasker but they should also do those things well. Before everything went south, I did manage to get the last batch of rolling pins shaped but not sanded- probably a good thing as I am still hawking up lugies and haven't gotten better dust protection. After the rolling pins are pretty much round and dimensioned, the tapering jig is used to shape them. I used to do this free hand but getting consistent results proved difficult. The base of the jig holds the taper guide at the bottom/back. The cutting is done with a handheld, sliding fixture that houses the HHS cutter and an adjustable follower (bolt). The cutter is removable for sharpening. I'm using a 5/16" square tool stock now. It seems to make a better cut that the 1/4" square cutter I use originally. Cutter and follower bolt- Cutter closeup- After the overall shaping is finished, The tapering jig is removed. Each end of the pin gets the shoulders rounded. I use either a small spindle gouge or the Easy Wood Tools rougher with an R2 cutter. The pins are now ready for sanding. Safe turning and stay well

Just got a email from Woodcraft with a article on making a jam chuck. This is the most unique work holding method I have seen and I usually just improvise with a piece of inner tube. UNIVERSAL JAM CHUCK

Just realized that yesterday was 55 years ago that I was discharged from the Navy. Left Treasure Island and took a 3 day train ride across this beautiful country. That was the year of the airline strike and there were no commercial flights anywhere. Our Patriot Turners- @AndrewB has been busy casting and turning resin. He showed us his cast blanks and they turned out perfect- Andrew describes the process in this post- From this casting he is turning a "dragon's egg"- More about the process in this post- @smitty10101 would like to do some "inside-out" turnings and asked our gang for some help. He has received several suggestions. If you do these types of turning, please hop over to Smitty's post and chime in- @HandyDan is always making such neat projects for his family. And speaking of bowls, @PatriotWoodturning gave us a look at his method of drying his bowl blanks. Our turners added their thoughts to his post- @Gerald is working on a gorgeous natural edge vessel. Gerald shows us what he started with and a little about the project. Our members had some questions about the finish and Gerald provided his thoughts. @Gunny added a practical project, he turned, to last week's "Wednesday's..." Always nice when you can make something better than the original. @AndrewB turned a small gobblet from a glued up blank. What made this different was Andrew uses a pen mandrel to hold the piece. Andrew included a couple of videos to document his progress. Our turners were not sure this was the best way to hold the work. Pretty good explanation of using the bowl gouge and reducing tearout. I really have difficulty when it comes to turning things that have a pleasing shape. Creating something that doesn't remind me of a neanderthal rock bowl is my achilles heel. Ernie Conover put together a short video showing various bowl shapes as an aid to developing an eye for more desirable pieces. Expand Your Horizons- Our buddy Tim Yoder is really turning THIN! He explains how it's done in this video- Holding your work on the lathe sometimes requires some imagination. Mike Peace explains the use of jam chucks and friction chucks- New Turning Items- Using an electric drill for lathe sanding is OK but sometime it just doesn't permit access to every angle. The drills can be heavy and tiresome to use. I just ordered one of these and looking forward to trying it out. I hope this Wednesday finds all of you safe and healthy. Our Patriot Turners- @Lissa Hall posted a concern about the crack that occured in a cedar bowl she recently turned. Several of our members provided some advice about what might have happened. Please check out her post and maybe you can offer additional ideas- @Ron Altier turned another beautiful bell ornament! He explains more about it and the finish he uses in his post. We've had lots of updates on past posts. @Kevin Beitz is still fighting with a maple bowl. Several members offered additional suggestions- @Gerald added additional images of his Friendship Bowls. He explained more about the finishes he uses- @Pauley provided more information on the finish on his curley maple vase- @Masonsailor has finished up his turned tulip cabinet- One of @Gerald's older post was revived. Great article from Woodcraft on making a jam chuck- What’s Coming Up- Everything still appears to be on hold. It may be a while until meeting, workshops and symposiums are up and running. For The Newbies- Woodworker's Journal has added a nice video, from Ernie Conover, on finishes for woodturners. Mr. Conover does a great job explaining and demonstrating several, simple finishes- Expand Your Horizons- There is still a growing interest in combining acrylic resins and wood. This video is not so much a "how to" but more of a "look what I did." New Turning Items- The folks at Woodturners Wonders are offering a new stand alone tool rest for your grinder. With the lockdown, it's nice to have this list to pick from Been playing off and on with that splated maple bowl. I've always wanted to turn a Calabash bowl and that was my intention with this one. Unfortunately, the punky wood under the faceplate had different plans. To get a safe purchase on the piece, I needed to reverse the mount which left screw hole where the bowl bottom ended up. I'm not really happy with the shape, either. The holes were deep enough that when the inside was turned, they came thru. I tried to use sawdust and CA to fill them but they are pretty noticeable on the inside. So right now, I'm considering some sort of foot. I have some ebony piano keys. Might try to use them and design something. Surely can't leave it like this. Safe turning and stay well

Just looking out of the window at the beautiful sunset. Days are getting shorter and the leaves are beginning to show signs of fading. The Internet, for me, was available on a 300 baud modem on a shared telephone line. Videos were out of the question. Well now, at least, fast Internet is available and groups are out there to help the new turner. A well known personality in the turning world, Capt. Eddie Castelin, is creating a website to bring turners of all levels together. The site is currently under development but check out what Capt. Woodcraft has started stocking Alumilite products including resins and colors. It can be fun to create your own turning blanks or use the casting resins as "fillers". But beware, to have castings free of voids and bubbles can get expensive. Pressure pots, compressors, vacuum chambers and pumps are some of the additional equipment necessary. If you decide to try this, Easy Wood Tools negative rake cutters are the best way to get the smoothest finish @Jim from Easy Wood Tools Recently, Carl Jacobson turned this little jem from an acrylic/carbon fiber blank- New Turning Items- The folks at Woodturners Wonders have redesigned their website. It's easier to navigate. This isn't really a new turning item but rather a novel idea for using a "regular" wood working device. Rick Turns shows us how he uses a woodshop moisture meter to check if his bowl blanks have dried. Watch for his little "drying kiln" in the video- Everything Else- I forgot to put this in last weeks Wednesday's.
