Well, my first drywall contractor called this morning, he wants to get started on my shop next week, and maybe have the rock delivered today. To recap this saga: I got the estimate back in May and was told it would be late July to do the job. In early August I was told it would probably be early Oct. Now today I'm hoping it will be next week. I had went through this in another post, and some here urged me to get more quotes. Actually I called for some and was scheduled to get another one next week, which i just cancelled. Maybe I should have waited for the rock to show up. But here's hoping!

It’s been a long and tough journey getting to the point I’m at. We finally found a house in Barnstead, NH with an oversized two car garage. We got it at a pretty good price and had some money left so I could get the garage ready for my shop. I had some foam insulation blown in and had more outlets installed and some better lighting. We (Amy wife and I) put up some shiplap pine for the walls. I have all my tools here, but the shop still isn’t ready. I’m waiting for a mini split to be installed, and still have some trim work and to roll out so my water based poly on the walls. The mini split won’t be installed until after Thanksgiving. I’m still experiencing other i…

Still a mess, but it sure looks better than it did a month ago. This is my new work area, a little small, about a quarter of what I had, but I like it, feels warm and cozy.

Well for a few weeks now I've been having a issue with my electrical wiring in my shop. When I used my table saw I could use it . But if I turned on the dust collector with it the breaker with flip off. If I used more than one thing at a time same effect. So I needed to have someone to come and put in a 220 outlet anyways so that I could use my new band saw. The guy I hired found that some of my old wiring was going bad and shorting out. So we ran a line from the house into my shop and installed a breaker box in my shop . Replaced most of the wiring because the guy who lived here before didn't have them grounded and some were really old and bad. So now hopefully I can get…

My garage multitasks as a shop among other activities. The garage is fully drywalled but no insulation. For years I've been using a kerosene heater for heat. There are a few problems with kerosene; smell, it gets way too hot, kerosene runs out before the fun does, and I might be overly concerned with an open flame with saw dust in the air. I have a sub panel in the garage capable of 220volts, I also have a natural gas port available, and I'm not totally opposed to a wood stove. Although I think I'd like an option of just flipping a switch to have heat. I used to work in an aircraft hangar which had infrared gas heat. I loved that system but I …

I have some oddities in my shop. I try to be as organized as I can and some of my organizational methods, ehem, are somewhat to be desired to say the least! I have for years stored the chuck key to my Rockwell Delta Drill Press in a location that I know where it always is, and it also serves a secondary purpose as well. Here is the my beloved Delta Rockwell Drill Press. And the place I keep the chuck key, the original chuck key that came with the drill press is here. Please tell me I am not the only one that has an oddity in the shop such as this. This gate keeper, errr I mean chuck key has served it's purpose there for a decade since I have had this particular dri…

So back in my youth i was into loud music in the car. I used to have 10 disc magazines for my cds, load 10 in, change them next month. This has lead to me having a cd collection of a little less than 700. Now in the basement where the shop is, radios get no reception. So I had bought a cheap little am/fm/cd player. It only held 1 cd at a time. I would play 1 cd till I get tired of it. Well the player stopped working 2 weeks ago. I figgered it got too much dust inside of it, and tried blowing it clean, and using some rubbing alcohol to clean it, but no success. we have WiFi set up in the unit, so I asked the kid what did I need to do to have music down there. I bought an A…

Guests have departed, landscaping is done...for now, the Honey Do list is pretty well done. FINALLY... I can get back to work on the shop building. First order of business is using Great Stuff to seal all the gaps at the roof to wall juncture. The once removed previous owners had started the process and almost completed one 40' side. Next up is patching the 9 holes that were cut in the sides for the dogs they were raising. Most are around 18"HX 12"W. One's a bit larger. That one was a swamp cooler inlet. Then, I can start laying in the fiberglass batt insulation. After which, comes the stud walls. The structure has 10' walls. I'm only going up 8'. Then comes the ele…

Around the end of the year, the furniture bank where I do volunteer work signed a lease for some new property. Just down the street from the current location. It will merge the offices. warehouse and furniture builds into one nice building. As far as we can tell, it was a lab for Proctor & Gamble. Our work area will have a dock with an overhead door. Plumbed for pneumatic and outlets about every 8 feet, already got some 240V outlets. We divided the area into two parts, and the landlord is doing the upgrades. The "dirty room" where we keep materials, do sawing, Kreg holes, dadoing and routing (routering???), double doors to the "clean"room where we will do asse…

at least on the outside. My Amish crew worked 1/2 day last Saturday, then returned for a short day on Labor day (worked until 1:30), then yesterday for another short day to finish the building. Can't express how impressed I am with the skills of this crew. The youngest (whom I'm told was 18) did the entire roof himself, carrying the shingles up one bundle at a time. He also installed the OH doors, and they are spot on perfect. While that was going on the father and the oldest boy (I had picked up somewhere this was a family with no outside help other than the driver) finished the sheathing, siding, fascia, etc. Anyway, as it looks ready for me to do the inside. I need to …

Got to the point that all those spiders were taking over the shop.....webs everywhere looking like Grandpa Munster's shop. Read somewhere a long time ago that stashing hedge apple fruit in the corners of a room will drive away all the spiders......dad used to have one or two in the basement at his house. Road trip to see the doctor in Sidney, OH.....discovered a grove of the Hedge apple trees along side the roadway. Stopped and picked up a few off the ground. All three are now in the shop...maybe spidey will leave the building? Anyone else hear about them hedge apples vs spiders?
