Shop re habbing progress

Guests have departed, landscaping is done...for now, the Honey Do list is pretty well done. FINALLY... I can get back to work on the shop building. First order of business is using Great Stuff to seal all the gaps at the roof to wall juncture. The once removed previous owners had started the process and almost completed one 40' side.

Next up is patching the 9 holes that were cut in the sides for the dogs they were raising. Most are around 18"HX 12"W. One's a bit larger. That one was a swamp cooler inlet. Then, I can start laying in the fiberglass batt insulation. After which, comes the stud walls. The structure has 10' walls. I'm only going up 8'. Then comes the electrical wiring. There's 200 amp service to the building. There's one live 220 outlet that I used for the &HP compressor and, two live quad 110 outlets ON THE CELING! So, with judicious use of extension cords, I can use my corded saws and stuff. Then, finally, 3/4" (maybe 1/2") sheeting on the walls. Then comes the fun stuff....benches, cabinets, shelves etc.

Methinks that my original goal of a fully operational shop by 4/15 was just a tad optimistic. Maybe 6/15...if I'm lucky.

Is it getting warm in there yet...you mentioned being in the 80s for the foreseeable future.

Gene I was fixin to ask you about what you just now typed....Glad you are that far along.....Just don't forget the insulation for your summers are about like ours and I had to insulate a sheet iron building I only built for all the stuff we were bringing from the last place.  funny too for we thought we would travel for the rest of our lives starting in 1999. She actually wanted to sell our place here at the lake and just live in the motor home where ever it would be...That got old right quick.

I only used 4" purlins so I set about ripping 2x6's in to three long strips and made 6" walls for extra insulation. It would have cost a fortune if I had have hired it out but I did all the work so the main expense was just the materials. Now one little heater in the winter and one window unit cooler and I could live in here and be comfortable...

Remember you got 50 more years to go so you guys do it up good..

Not bad at 80°. But, at 100+ it'll be an oven, without insulation. I can open the rollup door, though. And, use a big 3 speed commercial fan on a stand.

Not concerned about the winter temps. Hardly ever gets below 45° daytime temp. I brought a ProComm heater from Snowflake. It's a five plaque one with a fan and, puts out a lot of heat.

My neighbor has an almost identical building to mine. He used 4" thick insulation (r19, I think) with no plywood sheeting. It's comfy in the summer. I'll have sheeting up 8'. But the top 2' and the ceiling will just have insulation only.

If it becomes intolerably hot, I'll head for the house. The heat usually reaches it's hottest around 15:00. I'm an early bird and, it's not too hot around 05:00.

Walls are up! lumber rack is complete. We had just barely enough 2X4 lumber left over from the porch and patio builds to do the job. Thought I might need to rip some 2X6s but, didnt have to. Got a pile of shorts (less than 48") left over. Good start on shop cabinet frames. Bought a Rigid framing nailer for the job. Man, that thing is sweet! Weighs a lot less than the old Bostich gun that died a few years ago. We built the walls on the shop floor. Most were 10' sections. Lots of stooping over and, my 80 y.o. back, thighs and calves are telling me about it, too.

My 35 y.o. Campbell Hausfeld compressor has been a trooper but, it's about to die. It started leaking oil and can barely achieve 90 PSI. Thought about trying to repair it or replace the pump but, parts are no longer available. So, a new or barely used one is on the list. Gotta have a compressor.

So, the next job is wiring. Thinking about using all surface mount outlets at 48" above the floor. None of my work surfaces or cabinets will be higher than 36". And, any wall cabinet bottoms will not come that low. Any thoughts? All suggestions are appreciated.

No work today, though. Today is our 50th wedding anniversary. We'll have a house full of guests.

Have a happy 50th! :D

I'd put those outlets just an inch or 2 higher to allow you lean 4x8 sheets of stuff against the wall. Consider making the 120V outlets a 2 gang box. Oh, and:

Many thanks for all your congratulatory messages. We had a quiet celebration. One of our sons and his family treated us to a great Sushi and Sashimi meal, topped of with the most beautiful and delicious Milk Cake. We'd never heard of Milk Cake but, it's fantastic. I'll post some pictures later...after I can figure out Phyl's phone. Which will be when it gets too hot to keep working on the tin can.:Hot:

Did a little junque shopping at a huge 2nd hand store, today. We found several oak drawered cabinets and a couple just plain 3/4 plywood boxes. One great find is a solid cherry drawered upright cabinet about 4' high and 2"+ wide. They said it was a lingerie dresser. All different styles and woods. They'll make good tool storage boxes. Only spent $280.

Gene, I am always behind, but wanted to wish you a happy 50th.  Don't slow down, I am right behind you.  In about 18 months, we get to celebrate 50 years that she has endured me.  So, which of you have endured the other?  Ehhhh?

I do believe that Phyl's the endurer. I'm just along for the ride.
