Anyone using the "old" Pro Edge sharpening system? 2 questions. On the finger nail profile jig are 2 set of #s On the knuckle one set of numbers goes from 0-6 On the arm of the jig there is a set of numbers that goes from 1-3 I queried Robert Sorby customer service are they said that I had an old system and that the new system did not have the numbers. They refereed me to 2 YouTube videos that did not explain the functions of the numbers, but one video was helpful in another way.. Upon further investigation on the tube one video said not to alter the setting but did not explain their use or function. Anyone have an old system with an instruction book that explains the numbers? Or do you know what the numbers are for? Thks smitty

I know, a day late (and a dollar short). Got volunteered to make a set piece for the local community theater group. Rush job. Our Patriot Turners- @Masonsailor posted a new mallet he made for a friend. The unique design is for a specialized function. I really think this one is too pretty to use!! Paul tells us bout the use and the materials used, in his post- Back in May, @Gerald told us about the guest speaker at their club meeting. Jeff Hornung demonstrated how embellishes his bowls/platters with the Sorby Texturing and Spiraling tool. Gerald posted some of his fantastic examples recently. Our club had a great meeting this weekend with Jeff Hornung of The Walnut Log doing the demo. He did a Morroco bowl using a Sorby spiraling tool and then Chestnut stains dye and finally liming wax. Some Ideas I had thought about but the Sorby was not in formula til now. It is the blue bowl in center. He had a really cool light . It has magnetic rechargable heads and base is magnetic. It costs us nothing but a little time and can make a huge difference in a young persons life. @Gerald posted a little vessel he turned- This turned box will hold "Beads Of Courage" for the recipient. Gerald and the Magnolia Woodturners have been making these containers and giving them to kids battling cancer. This video tells us about the Beads of Courage program- Gerald also provide us with additional information on how to participate in this wonderful program. Our Patriot Turners- Our turners were back at their lathes this week! @RustyFN posted his curly maple segmented bowl and it is a beauty! Rusty received lots of positive comments about it. Decided to see what could be found inside. I'm surprised that I could get this much. Sill a couple of cracks that will need taken care of At this point I normally submerge the piece in the soap and water solution for a couple of days and then on to drying in a paper bag with shavings. Turned out my pot is only 12" in diameter!. I CA'ed the cracks, wrapped the bowl in stretch wrap and put it in my little drying box (ala Rick Turns). Then for the cleanup! Safe turning and stay well

Lots happening with our turners this week... Our Patriot Turners- @FrederickH posted a project in the woodworking section. He is making a box for his lathe chuck/jaws. From all the comments and ideas, I thought maybe our turners would like to see what he made and all the other ideas form his post- You can see the build and how he finished the inside to hold his chuck- @Smallpatch showed us his in progress steady rest. Looks like it is going to be a nice one too- Jess' post contains images of his build, lots of comments from our group and some great music! New member @bradleyheathhays asked for our opinion on a lathe he is considering buying. Check out his post and maybe you can provide some input to help him make a choice- @RustyFN has been really busy in his shop putting that new lathe through its paces! Rust is trying some outboard turning by making a large bowl/platter- Lots of great comments on this one- Unfortunately, not every one of Rusty's projects came out as planned. His efforts in turning a winged bowl were all for naught- I think we've all been there, and our members were sympathetic- While Rusty was working, he tried a new tool, for him. He used a round nose scraper which lead him to post a question to our members. As always, our turners had super advice- As is often pointed out here in the Woodturners forum, there is no substitute for learning from an experienced turner. Books and DVD's are helpful but the interaction between teacher and student cannot be overstated. Rusty proves that point in his post describing his experience with his first turner's club meeting. @AndrewB Finished up his new lathe workbench and started in on another pepper grinder. This one is a real beauty. Andrew is getting these down to a science! Check out his post for the production images as his project progresses. Here's a novel approach that seems to work pretty good! Too often, when I put a chunk of wood on the lathe, I'm really not sure exactly what I'll end up with. I ordered a Robert Sorby 1/2” bowl gouge with the fingernail grind. The price was too good to pass up.

I have been looking online trying to find some chisels that I don't have to pay too much for. That is no easy task. Sorby has a set with one handle and you install the cutters in the handle as needed. I am sure most of you have seen them. The price isn't to bad for these, I think about $150 for three cutters and a handle. I think I can resharpen them to some degree. On the other hand, there are the other chisels but I would have to sharpen them. If I bought those chisels I would buy a Wolverine jig to sharpen them. There are several ways you can buy the Wolverine jig and I don't know what I need to do about buying them.

There was a Robert Sorby multi tip hollowing tool in that batch of tools I bought at auction. It was missing the straight bit and the circular hold down for it. Went to work on the lathe and made the hold down. Took a 3/16" hole for the screw so I use the same size hole for the cutter and made the cutter from a 3/16" drill bit. Flattened one side of the bit on the belt sander, cut it to length and sharpened it. Turned out well and saved myself a few bucks.
