Lots happening this past week! Our Patriot Turners- @keith long stopped by to say "Hi". He is busy with life and doing well. He had some questions about lathe parts. Check out his post and see if you can add to what has been said- Keith also had a question about what wood species would be best for making duck calls. Our Patriot Turners- @nevinc posted images of his walnut bowls and a question about warping. His beautiful walnut bowls changed shape after they set for a bit. If you have been turning for a little while, this shop made sanding station can really be an asset to your shop- Expand Your Horizons- Alan Stratton continues his series on eccentric turning with more ideas using his shop made jig/chuck- Alan also, demonstrates how to turn the perfect sphere without the aid of jigs- Mike Peace added a video on the topic of toxic wood. I know many of our members have had allergic reactions to various species. Along those same lines, I came across this video of a turner, garage engineering an HEPA filtration system. New Turning Items- From the folks at Woodturners Wonders- https://woodturnerswonders.com/collections/kodiak-sharpening-system Daryl Johns (Dread Knot Workshop) posted a review/demonstration of the new Robert Sorby Steady Pro for hollowing- Everything Else- Rick Turns list of YouTube woodturning videos from last week- Woodturning seems to run in fads. Everyone does bowls, then hollowing, then acrylics. Lately I noticed a lot of surface colors. I have to say, although they are amazing, I still prefer to see the natural color of the species. I found a couple of pieces of white oak left over from a gun rack I made for a friend. The pieces were cutoffs and about 12" wide and 1"+ thick. Thinking about making something- maybe a platter. Turning the years of storage dirt away, the wood was true to its name- white. The grain was nondescript. Played around a little with some coloring ideas. I thought maybe black toner cartridge dust might fill the pores- not so much- but it did make an almighty mess on the lathe. Then tried brown paste shoe polish- not bad. Then black opaque resin dye- about the same. Last was amber transparent resin dye- better. Keep in mind I was only trying to accentuate the grain pattern- not color the entire surface. Applied the color and then skimmed the surface. Brown shoe polish- Black opaque resin dye- Amber transparent resin dye- I might just use oil based poly to give the piece a nice mellow glow. Who says you can't get curlies from carbide cutters- Safe turning and stay well

Hasn't been this busy on our forum in quite a while so let's just jump right in! Our Patriot Turners- We have had a new sub-forum added to the Woodturners Forum. The Ringmaster sub-forum is dedicated to those makers who create bowls using the Ringmaster method. You can find it listed under the main Woodturners Forum- https://thepatriotwoodworker.com/forums/forum/98-ringmaster-turning/ Let's see some of those beautiful creations!! @Gerald gave us a look at a commissioned bowl he is in the process of turning- Gerald tells us about the species and more in his post as well as a bit about his "new" kiln- Gerald also posted an interesting article by Ron Brown providing some additional thoughts on Carbide tipped tools. We have had several insightful discussions here on the forum comparing traditional and carbide tools. @FrederickH posted a question to the group about using a fluted parting tool. Several of our members provided their insights. If you can help out Rick, give him your thoughts at- One of our newer members @adot45 gave us a look at his latest fantastic turning. He is looking for information about a thin parting tool. Last week we had a question about bowl saver tools. Can someone tell me which is the correct way to use this tool? Flute up or down on the tool rest?

Learning to turn can be intimidating, more so (I suspect) when you don't have anyone local to turn to for advice. So I come here and glean what I can. This is my latest endeavor....another not-very-big-deal, but a handle for a parting tool. The shank is installed with a combination of epoxy in the bottom of the hole and a slit cut in the end under the ferrule. The victory in this is that the hole is aligned with the handle. I had managed to work out a method for this with a screwdriver, and this is another attept (that worked). Anyway, the handle is loosely styled like a Henry Taylor chisel I have and this was actually just puttering around. Since I was just puttering, I tried the burned rings that Dan described in another post. It's hard maple, and if it falls apart I still have the OEM handle to put it in. I did give it a couple of coats of wiping varnish. Forgot to mention, one big screwup was that my tenon for the ferrule isn't long enough, it's too short by almost 1/8"! I think I can get my tubing cutter and shorten the ferrule to the tenon length.

Decided to see what could be found inside. I'm surprised that I could get this much. Sill a couple of cracks that will need taken care of At this point I normally submerge the piece in the soap and water solution for a couple of days and then on to drying in a paper bag with shavings. Turned out my pot is only 12" in diameter!. I CA'ed the cracks, wrapped the bowl in stretch wrap and put it in my little drying box (ala Rick Turns). Then for the cleanup! Safe turning and stay well

Hard to believe but only two more days left in April! Really looking forward to summer weather. Our Patriot Turners- @Gerald gave us a peek at his shop made parting tool. Unlike a lot of parting tools, this one cuts cleanly. Gerald explains how he created this tool, in his post- @RustyFN posted his almost completed combination bowl. This one is a beauty and combines multiple disciplines. Rusty got lots of positive comments on his work. You can read them in this update to his original thread- Rusty also provide a bit of sage advice. It is self explanatory- @AndrewB is finishing up a pepper mill in which he combined 2 species. They really look nice together- Andrew explains more about this turning in this posting- Andrew also mentioned his wishes to improve his dust collection. Maybe you have some ideas that he could incorporate. What’s Coming Up- Click on the above image for the link to registration For The Newbies- Sanding is one way to remove tool marks. However, a better way is to avoid them as much as possible. Here's a video explaining the possible causes of the marks and what you can so to help reduce them during the turning process- This is another video in the beginners series, from Mike Waldt. This one on scrapers, negative rake grinds and parting tools. It's rather long as it is from his live presentation.- Although aimed at the Record Power Midi Lathe, most of the maintenance tips in this video can be applied to just about any lathe- Craft Supplies USA has been publishing a beginners series of woodturning videos by Dale Nish. This one is turning a bowl from a dried blank- Expand Your Horizons- Lyle Jamieson shows us the thought process for designing and turning a natural edge hollow vessel. The other week we posted some information on purchasing already made wooden threads for lidded projects. With a little practice and a couple of tools, you can create them yourself, as Mike Peace explains- Within Mike's video, he references this from Allan Batty New Turning Items- Couldn't find anything interesting this week, so hang on to that stimulus check! Everything Else- Tim Yoder is having fun with this project to be gifted to a friend Rick Turns' list of woodturning YouTube videos from last week- I finished up the little natural edge bowl I had been messing with. I like the shape but I think I can do better by using less of the logs diameter and making the piece a little longer. I think that will give the piece a flatter more pleasing look. Anyway, used wipe on gloss poly for this one. I'm getting better at making the walls thinner, too. Safe turning and stay well

I saves a few of the planner blades in all the nuts and bolts I gave away. Found a use for one. For those familiar with Sorby tools they make a parting tool with a v grind at the end. That is way I have attempted here. Used a round grinding stone in my Wecheer carver. Had to grind off the sharp side and a bit off the back to get it to fit in pre drilled handle I had in a drawer. Ferrell is a plumbing reducer. now for the edge and proof it does a great end grain cut. I have never been able to get a parting cut that clean usuall have to clean up with spindle or bowl gouge

Another week in the books. We've had a beautiful stretch of nice weather here in South Central PA. Unfortunately it has been so dry that the forest service is predicting very muted colors on the trees as the the leaves change. Our Patriot Turners- @Masonsailor reminded us that Christmas isn't that far away! He has started in on his gifts already He received lots of positive comments on this ice cream scoop- Of course, @Ron Altier is always prepared for Christmas! He gave us a look at a couple of new ornaments he turned. As always, Ron's pieces brought lots of comments- See his post for the process and finish he used- @AndrewB has been busy with bowls. The first is a pair made of Bhilwara wood. Check out this post for his description of what he did and some of his techniques. He also posted a Canary wood bowl. With this one, Andrew wasn't sure about the shape. Please see his post and give him your thoughts on it Andrew also worked on a couple of birch glue-ups to turn into bowls- In his posts he shows us how he did the glue-ups and also included a video on the turning process- What’s Coming Up- I couldn't find any new events. I suspect the folks who organized the Virtual Craft Festival on YouTube will have another event but I cannot find any definitive information on this. For The Newbies- A several informative videos this week. First, Mike Peace helps us sort out the various parting tools and their uses- Gouges! What's the difference? Here's a video that explains the differences between spindle gouges and bowl gouges @AndrewB said he was having trouble using his new inertia sander. I found this video, from M. Saban Smith, explaining how to use these sanders. This starts at about the 5 minute mark- Expand Your Horizons- @HandyDan was kind enough to send me the link to this video. The author demonstrates how to turn a multi axis "square bowl". Really Cool and you get 2 bowls from one glue-up! As noted earlier, @Ron Altier and @Masonsailor have been working on Christmas ideas. @lew, or @Jim from Easy Wood Tools, I was looking at the EWT website at parting tools, and I saw that there is a new one, referred to the second generation parting tool, with a model number of PT150. I looked at several retailers to see what it was selling for, and nobody seems to have it. Is this brand new and just hasn't been shipped yet? Can it be purchased directly from the EWT website? Is the EWT website being updated, and not everything is up yet? I'm not ready to buy right now, but it would be nice to know that it is available when I am ready. Thanks.

Wednesday's Wisdom For Woodturners for January 21 generated a couple of comments about how well it worked. I made this short little video of the operation. The wood is hard maple. http://youtu.be/sZBaXfUpnwQ The tool works pretty good although there is a lot of friction/heat generated.
