Only 6 days until Valentines day! Maybe your significant other would like a new turning tool Our Patriot Turners- @RustyFN turned a couple of small boxes, one of which he entered into his turning club's contest. Both are beauties! Check his post to see which one got entered into the contest! @forty_caliber got a new chuck for his lathe. This baby is a monster, too! He did a super job of sharing his findings and comparing it to one of his other chucks. Please see his post for lots more images and additional findings- Forty also posted his splated pecan bowl. Really gorgeous color and finish See his post for some more details- @Masonsailor used a couple of spare minutes to turn another one of his gorgeous bottle openers- Paul tells us a little more in his post- @jthornton is working on a gift, requested by his Mrs. I'm really looking forward to seeing how this "dizzy bowl" comes out! The glued up blank looks marvelous- JT has lots more process images in his post- @Bob Hodge's post about carbide quality and availability has a new entry. Tools, creating blanks, chucking small pieces and more Chucking methods- Spindle gouge and skew practice- Expand Your Horizons- Should I use a mortice or tenon to hold the piece? Ask 10 turners and you will probably get 15 different answers. Instead of asking a turner, ask the piece you are about to turn- @RustyFN showed a finial he turned and there was some comments on design. We posted this video before but it's worth another look- Our member @Steve Krumanaker turns beautiful honey dippers. This is how Mike Waldt does it- Several of our turners make segmented project. Having a way to assure the pieces are flat is a must. Not too much happening this week- Our Patriot Turners- @forty_caliber turned a couple of bowls from a pecan log. That species surely has some lovely grain. First up is an incredible salad bowl- And then an awesome bread bowl- What’s Coming Up- Cindy Drozda- Click on the above image for the link to registration. For The Newbies- Mike Peace did an Interactive Remote Demonstration for the Fraser Valley Woodturners Guild, British Columbia, Canada. He covered spindle projects and methods of holding the turnings. This is a little long but lots of good information- Craft Supplies USA posted an instructional video for turning a goblet- Expand Your Horizons- Carl Jacobson celebrated Captain Kirk's return to space, this past week. I see social media has been having great fun creating memes about Mr. Shatner's voyage- It is not too early to start thinking about ornament turning! Here's your chance to turn a funnel (bowl) and not have it be a mistake!! My early turning creations tended to be useful kitchen items. Salt and pepper mills, salt cellars, sugar bowls and rolling pins. I never could figure out how to incorporate the Celtic Knot into the hollow vessels. Alan Stratton has solved that problem. All I have to do is build a jig!! Our Patriot Turners- Our turners were back at their lathes this week! @RustyFN posted his curly maple segmented bowl and it is a beauty! Rusty received lots of positive comments about it. The grinding mechanism is different from his past turnings- Andrew shows us his progress from the rough blank to the finished mill- Andrew also gave us a review of his new buffing system He gave us the link to this product in his post- One of our long time members posted his first turning. @Ron showed us the beginnings of a cane he is making- He received lots of encouragement and some suggestions on this turning- @forty_caliber poste a question about using the parting tool. Again this is a replay of a live session and is kind of long. From the World Wide Wood Turners, a nice demonstration on various methods of holding a turning. Expand Your Horizons- Mike Waldt has something for the more advanced turner in this video- Alan Stratton's take on chasing threads Mike Peace recently published a video on the various types of spiraling and texturing tools. Within the video, Mike refers to links for longer videos on each tool. Sam Angelo has a video demonstrating how to calculate the internal volume using some easily made measuring devices. Decided to see what could be found inside. I'm surprised that I could get this much. Sill a couple of cracks that will need taken care of At this point I normally submerge the piece in the soap and water solution for a couple of days and then on to drying in a paper bag with shavings. Turned out my pot is only 12" in diameter!. I CA'ed the cracks, wrapped the bowl in stretch wrap and put it in my little drying box (ala Rick Turns). Then for the cleanup! Safe turning and stay well
