February 27, 20206 yr Popular Post Spent yesterday riding herd on 10th, 11th and 12th grade Electronics students. Needed a nap after that!!! Our Patriot Turners- @Steve Krumanaker is back posting after a brief hiatus. Glad to see he hasn't lost his touch! Steve shows us his concept of using premade threads and combining them with his turnings- Check out his post and explanation here- @Gerald's post on texturing continues to generate lots of comments and questions. Here are the latest - What’s Coming Up- Also, Click on the images for the links to more information. For The Newbies- Mike Peace added a short video giving us his thoughts on the best ways to learn how to turn. He makes some great points, especially in the beginning, about the different types of learners. For enjoyment, here's Carl Jacobson turning a lidded box and then adding some lovely details- Expand Your Horizons- I'm always looking for ideas on how to make my finials more elegant. Here's a 3 part video from Janice Levi showing her take on creating them. Here's the first part (the second and third parts are linked from her channel- New Turning Items- Here's something kinda cool that might be neat to add to Christmas ornament or maybe some of those smaller items that would be difficult to find in the dark- Glow in the dark inlay powder! From Craft Supplies USA- "Not only does this glow-in-the-dark powder inlay add color and contrast to your projects, it glows in the dark up to 10 hours! This photoluminescent phosphor powder is perfect for projects like rings, light pulls, pens and more. It can be bonded into a turned recess using thin cyanoacrylate adhesive with activator, then turned to shape using carbide tipped tools. Because it’s a very hard stone compound, it’s abrasive on tools and cutters and requires carbide tools for turning." Everything Else- Still playing with the little hollow vessel. I managed to add the gold leafing- I wanted to highlight the gold with dark rings but needed to figure out a way to burn the narrow rings. Wire wouldn't work. I've read where folks use formica to create the friction but I didn't have any. Then I spied some antlers that were sent to me by a dear friend. Shaped the end of one to fit into the ring. Worked pretty good but I think I'll need to refine the antler shape and really max out the speed to get better burns. Next was to part off the chuck tenon and then reverse the piece to finish off the bottom. That required some sort of specialized chuck. Not only to hold the odd shaped piece but also to prevent damage to the leafing. Now all I have to do is put on a finish. An oil finish would really bring out the grain but will not provide any protection for the leafing. Guess it will be poly. Now, gloss or satin??? Safe turning

Our club has Janice Levi coming in May and I am looking forward to that. Now to watch the video. Oops forgot I did a couple of executive tops based on Wyoming Woodturner video you posted. Had been looking at doing this so here it is.
