have to say, i now have both the 5 inch ros (thanks to sil) who is in picture, she loves wood working, and the 6inch, both the dust collection is off chart, the larger one i usually use for the first sand, it gets it done so freaken fast its amazing, with little effort, although heavy and powerful, and at first the biggn was a little tough to control, but managed to finger it out. i did buy after market pads, (klingspor) cheaper and awesome,

the 5'' she bought a gaggle of abranets, great pad, does the job, unsure of longevity, but nice fiinish for sure.

we've gone thru so many 5'' ros, usually a couple a year, cheap or expensive, for some reason, they give it up,

i tend to like the light ones as i roll the edge of the boards even after routing, it gives it a smoother edge and some of the exotics tend to splinter badly so it cleans that issue up well

i choked on the 6'' price, but a deal arose and i gave it a go, it was a winner, i did buy the domino along with it, i have not ventured to use yet, but soon, once i get shop squared away so i can begin building some things i've wanted for years. heirloom type pieces, its time to give that a go.

happy hump day from balmy Arizona, weather supposed to turn palatable, here hoping

Are those for "smithing" like in guns? And is that Otis like in Mayberry?;)

Those look almost like the set of Irwins I have.

Sitting on the bench right now?

Yeah they are hollow ground and for guns. "Otis" is Otis Roberts,..the maker of the Ol tool chest I'm repurposing. It's been a while since I posted.....now that I'm gonna be making steady progress I may open up a thread with all of the progress pics. They are all on this thread several months back ;)

Working on a Dutch Tool Chest to hold tools close at hand when I can put them away easy.  Using found wood (reusing furniture, pallet and logs I've milled).

the ole gal was complaining she had to raise and lower the pad for the laser engraver, so began the process of adding risers, while the head itself has about 2 inches of travel shes been burning all kindsa crap, and one has to focus the laser to make it burn tight lines.

so i added risers, later today will make panel to raise bed, so she can do just about anything up to 4 inches tall, after that, well we'll just have to improvise. i plan on making a couple riser panels, that will slide in to raise bed it will have positive stops and allow for one corner of laser area to be defined for layout, see whut happens.

Great up-cycling, re-cycling of materials Tom. I really like your creative, out of the box (no pun intended) design. Sweet collection of tools by the way. Great mix of old and new. Can't go wrong with a Stanley 41Y push drill or Stanley ratcheting screwdriver. Thanks for sharing.

BTW, great to have you on-board here. Glad you found the TPW. Looking forward to seeing more of your work and participation. Where in Massachusetts are you located? @Artieand @Al B both hail from MA. Two great guys and members here. Happy you're here.

Creative upgrades RJ. Smart man to keep the "boss" happy especially when she has access to sharp things and even more so the tool purchase budget.:P

Instead of swapping out the riser blocks, I'd add something like this

It would also reduce the amount of fiddling with the focus screw on the laser head

Or make 1-2-4 (or 3) blocks that can be turned to 1" high or 2" high or 4" (or 3") high. Put a registration hole/pin on each side to keep them in place when the laser is moving around.

Good idea. Good project for a 3D printer to use in an application like this, not that I have either tools.

I"m going to make a platform with waste board for different heights based on the available adjustment, remove and slide into place which ever one fits the need for height, each waste board will have a corner defined for layout on laser, so she can put a board in for lasering her logo, and or orientation. no biggy, couple pcs of 3/8 ply and some measured blocks with stops and walla, easey peasey.

goal is to stack the lasers ontop  of each other to minimize space, exhaust system can be modified to fit each one, also have to build the 3d print cabt. on the list, hmmm, way too many lists, and thanks to all for ideas.

BTW, the 1-2-4 blocks could also be 1.25 x 2.5 x 3.75, or whatever your 3 most common heights needed to be.

When I taught furniture design occasionally a student would propose (in sketches) an end table design that could be 3 different height.  The idea usually compromised down to 2 useful heights found by just tipping the table onto a side. 2 adjacent tops.

okay well, got platform built, still need to fire up laser to set a couple perimeters but per pictures you can see what i'm accomplishing.

i'll glue down the thin runners to guide the platform in to same position each time, front has a stop block, i'll need to put some positive stops on top of platform to slide engraving pc into to square up with laser head, the stop blocks there will allow me add a layer of 1/4 in ply ontop of plat form which negated me having to make two platforms to accommodate different thicknesses, the laser head travel is about 2-3/4'', so can pull platform and set items on another pc of 1/4'' over the guides to make a flat surface,

see how it goes hope to get it squared away next day or so, ole gal was gone with her posse today., probably creating havoc, where ever they went to lunch and a movie,

any hows it was my idea, next up is finalizing this, and begin cabt build, gonna stack 2 lasers, cabt, be about 30''sq, x about 36'' tall, see whut happens, i have some 3/4 ply, so maybe use that for sides and shelf and 1/4 for back, and figure out some laser glass size for doors. okey dokey, gotta plan, see where it goes. wanted to use mdf, but gotta buy some and i'm a cheap ole guy. gonna use whut i got.

gonna head over to a friend of a friend who built a 3d printer cab, it seems to serve the purpose to keep his printer at optimum temps for working correctly, heat can be a friend or not, is the gist i get from quite a few videos, and of course, a breeze is a no no, so no ceiling fan on, and placement of unit if not in cabt, somewhere away from mini split ac head, ugh, here comes some trial and tribulations, the visit entails a try of his home made rye, hehehe, this could get out of hand.

happy hump day,

little shop time, travel time, and most of all, bull sessions with friends
