What's On Your Work Bench?

So I was wanting to do something from a blank using only hand tools...and this ended up being it. I picked up a variety of rasps for the roughing out to see what worked best for me. From left to right is the one previously pictured..a large Corradi coarse cabinet rasp. Then we have 2 10 " Gold Precision cabinet rasp also Corradi. Next are 2 Dragon rasps from Stewmac in coarse and fine. Next 3 are Iwasaki 8" in coarse, medium and fine...and last is the Shinto. All of these have a strong following and are quality tools. For me the largest ended up being my pick for removing large amounts of stock in short order. The others are coming in handy as I work my way down. Yes they can be pricey but it is the experience I want to have and the things I like to use. I could have easily rounded all this out with a diegrinder and some sort of sanding discs but it's just not what I want to do.

Gene, If I remember right the tooth pattern is some sort of patented waterfall style pattern that although is not hand stitched it still leaves a smoother surface without many tear out or drag marks. I looked on the site and the closest I could find appeared to have a machined tooth pattern and not the waterfall style. It is the same length though.

sure made the peg work look easy, hmmm, wonder what i did wrong, lol. learning curve ahead for sure.

ole gal final sanded a dozen boards or so, today shes gonna burn her logo on to them, then off to oil bath, shes working me hard, lol

had an fella come by yesterday to look at my jeep rock crawler i've had up for sale, not been pushing it much, but it does need to go. i did a dozen or so pictures, showing pros and cons, its rough in spots, it is a crawler, and had been upside down, sideways, and well off its wheels more than once, hehehe, so fella looks at it, and says, ''well now those pictures sure do tell you the truth'', its rough, to which i agreed, then he made a ridiculous offer, i giggled and scared him off. I'm all for offers that are reasonable, and ''no i'm not emotionally attached to it'' , it was a fun tool, and time to go.

anyhowz, maybe next year.

since when did cell phones cost a grand, i've an old android (5 years old) pretty sure i paid under 400 for it, t mobile, wants almost 1k for a simple phone, so daughter #4 ordered me a google phone a pixel, which i can put on t mobiles service, it was under 400 so we'll see how it works, i so struggle with electronic crap, wouldn't be so bad, but folks that show and tell you how they work, assume you know some iota about them, which i don't , on and off switch, ifn its so smart, why do i have to be.

I remember the wife having iPhone and I had no idea how to use it. After 8 years and three phones I can tell her how to fix hers. It just takes a little time to play with all that new stuff

Looks like you got your scraper sharpening all figured out Jim.:Praise: Sweet shavings. A gerbils dream:P

Wha .... ??? Sharpening?  But don't you hve to buy a new one when they stop scraping? :P

I'm using a medium-carbon (Swedish) steel scraper made in Portugal by the French company Bahco. $10 each recently delivered.

They sharpen easier than the high-carbon steel Lie-Nielsen scrapers.  Love both but I'm still at the flat area of the learning curve.

Speaking of clamps, I pulled out the Big boys for this. Two 5" NOS Pony c-clamps rated for about 2400 lbs each, and two Pony 3/4" pipe clamps. Figure I'm pushing 6000-7000 pounds here.  1,000 psi. The final perimeter surround on a bar of extra-petite parquet.

This bar will be crosscut into a set of Executive Idea Blocks.  Sort of like dominos, but way way nicer.

this is what i've been shackled to the shop last couple days, slave type labor, but am getting fed, so.. lotsa projects, still more to go.

felt good to finalize a few outstanding things.

some sort of marble game, we ran on the xcarve, laser burning the logo into the boards, oil bath , boards in stands to drain and dry, stands for boards, been a biggie this year, and some rolling pins, always a huge hit, have orders for dozen or more. i'm slow on the lathe, but have all the blanks rough cut, have some bootiful mesquite to make a few out of.

RJ - nice work!  Now, how about some pics... of the rock crawler ;)

here ya go, i bought it new in 2000, its got 89k on it, all off road, been a trailer queen since it had 500 miles on it, put a 5.5 inch RE, lift, body lift, dana 44's locked in front, spooled in rear, 4/1 xfer case, 5.10 gears, auto , fancy tranny, full cage, with harness set up.

its been rolled four full times all but one ended up on wheels, 5 statue of liberties, meaning standing on front bumper or on rear bumper, was able to drive out of all, no end over end. been on its side dozens of times,

couple years ago, we were out prepping for a long run, it was july, almost never did hot weather runs in the desert, but much like a tv show it was a short hour tour, and well everything that could go wrong went wrong, trashed three tires, had to wait for someone to bring me the third one, we were in bfe, and finally got out ,compadre on way out trashed his tie rods on a big arse rock, we managed to use some rachet straps an nursed him home to a friend trailer, and i for the first in me life had a heat stroke, laid under my jeep for an hour with cooler water douseing me till i cooled off enough to finish tieing jeep down, and heading the two hour drive home ac in my truck felt like it was on heat.

anyhowz, hefting 3  37inch x 13 inch tires on beadlocks, did me in, its sat for two years, i always thought i'd get back into it, but in reality, i'm just too dang old to crawl under it and work on it, so. . its been up for sale for a while.

have to say, met some awesome folks, and saw some incredible country, hardest trail and crawling was a 5.5, four day trip in the sierras up by donner lake, whew, the bung hole puckered a few times more than i thought it would

but time has come ole boy is beat on body, but mechanically the little 6banger runs like a timex.

happy hump day.
