Me too. Crept out of bed careful not to wake the cat, because when she eats, I eat. Got a head-start on Week 39 crafting BANG

Getting ready to take two 1 5/8" sq. lengths out of two edges, saving the other for its axe (adze?) -hewn flat - maybe a shelf? Looking at the growth, I'm thinking the prevailing wind side is narrower ringed.

Cut this blank out several years ago. Wanted to take it the rest of the way by hand. Me and the draw knife did not get along well and I put it away for a while...... so after getting a variety of rasps in house I have revisited. Decoration only...going on an old medium size broad axe. Just rounding off the edges at the moment. This would not be a legit style handle for what it's goin on. I'm just playin.

Ha!  Took me 30 seconds but I got it. Guess I'm becoming enlightened:TwoThumbsUp:

Yes, I love the handle also. And see a huge market for you making mediaeval recreation weapons. With huge sales at the yearly Renaissance Faire just west of the Phoenix East Valley

Need deep pockets and, even then, it's still "good luck" getting a booth space. A few guys set up "off grounds" along the highway. That event draws thousands of gawkers each year.

Haha,..thanks. I'll look it up online. I have some old buddies that are in the flintlock community that sell leather. One of them went to some sort of medieval war game camp up in Pennsylvania and set up a booth, it lasted around 2 weeks. He said   "I saw everything up there"   lol

This week got off to a bang. Finally started, and finished, a lil' bench conceived 14 years ago ... The photo named, aptly, Another Use For Violin Pegs.

You can see the difference between waxed and not, in the parquet trays. If jewelry is sitting on it, I'm thinking keep the deck natural, wax only the rails.

Time was not monitored ... Call it 75 - 120 minutes. And $140 in new clamps (ordered so I could do more set-ups at a sitting). I'll get maybe $20 for the tray. Worth it? You  bet'cha! :)

Some mighty classy brass clamps, there. Your use of endgrain is inspired.

When I got my first seven plus a couple of other items for $50, used, I did not think too much of them. @frenchwwr commented that they were "really nice" but all I saw were used clamps for $5 each.  For small stuff, they are handy but do not have great pulling power.

Lately I'll plan out multiple assemblies, lay everything out, wait until the mood is right, and hit it. Might be 11:30pm, 3:00am, or 5:00am.  Usually want to keep pushing until everything that can be glued IS glued.  I've been running out of clamps lately, and had priced the brass ones ... $12.50 each, any size.  Doable in a household with no cable TV, alcohol, tobacco, fast food, chewing gum ...

Sent in an email to MicroMark tech support. Confirmed these were genuine Made In Japan mini-brass bar clamps. Yep, even the same roll stamp.  And asked about the forged mini-c-clamps.  Made in India - these are 'fair', not as HD as some other Taiwan / Chinese mini-c-clamps, but after lubing up the screw, they are better than 'fair'. I like the thin flat clamp surface; note how it is slipping under the bar clamp.

I *think* hatagane means 'traditional Japanese woodworking clamp'.  KAKURI brand have a tee-handle - I've got one of these; it is beat up and harder to cramp tight. The new ones are YAMASUKE, I think. Smoother as butter.  Likely, I'll order from the manufacturer next time.

And I still like big clamps.  :cowboy:

Thank you!  To the pith flows sweetest of grain.

I've got three nice pieces discarded by others because the pith is running close. Longleaf usually cracks close to the pith. And that is where the best wood is.

I'll get 1] before 2] resawn, 3] assembled into a parquet block 4] crosscut sectioned, and 5] assembled images of the next project.  After I get a new belt on my ∆ Delta ∆.

well ole gal shanghaied me this am, and we glued up a half dozen or so boards, laid out the supports for trivits and routed handle in them, and began fabrication of the dadoeing jig, for the trivit slats, which i'm gonna hate cutting, i hate cutting thin strips, ugh, each trivit takes 15 pcs x 17 inc long, and she has me rough out a dozen set of bases, so. whew, i see a fresh libation break coming after about half way, may get the jig almost done today, have some other wood to sort, in between the rain drops,

happy days

little update, got to use the new router table again, boy howdy, how did i get along without it, and that 15 inch planer, think i'll look for a 20 to take its place, but for now its a keeper.

pics on updated items ,we managed to clean up for a few hours today, during the rain .

Love the contrasts RJ. Top picture, is that board accented with purple heart? That's a keeper!

  • Popular Post

yep, some purple heart , paduak, and some mahogany on one of them, i put fresh blades in a small delta 12.5 inch planer, and wowza, cuts like butta and smooth as can be, minimizes sanding for sure, i use the bigger planer for boards over 12 inch or so, it'll do 15 inch easy,

she comes up with some crazy designs, this size board is her best seller, about 12x16 most folks want this size, its amazing how many do not want a juice groove on some boards,

i made a jig to do this, and managed to fubar a couple boards ugh, lotsa clean up, shes gonna sell'm as blems, lol.

anyhows, we had a blast today, opened shop roll up door and left ceiling fans on and watched the rain some, planed some, chatted some,

good day to be upright

well, drafted again, to give the gal the push, we managed to get boards sanded and oiled, got the trivit pcs, grooved for the slats to hold pans,  also got them cut into a curve, all that needs to happen now is ripping a hundred or so 1/4'' strips for the trivets, whole lotta sanding, then more sanding and stuff. sure was a hoot, and even got the gal to get the joint cleaned up some. under duress for sure
