Q:  Why does a chicken coop only have two doors?   A:  Because if it had four doors, it would be a sedan.

How old is your workbench? Looks older than me and almost as beat-up. Steve

I think it will be 9 this coming September?   It is beat up, just like it's owner...took an afternoon to build it, then refined things over the years...

. . . the summer I almost melted  :cowboy:  but did manage one or two woodcraft projects

( what I wouldn't give for a cast iron tilting-bed high-precision miniature joiner ... )

A large hand plane upside down in a bench vise works wonders, and you can clamp an angled fence to it for small scale coopering like you are doing.  With a sharp blade, you won't even miss a powered machine for small work.

cwamp an angled fence

Thanks!  I've seen folks working against clamped planes but have not tried it. Though finally have a real-ish bench with vises on it.

Those 30 staves are ½" x ⅛" and the angle was 6º.  I'd need a rabbet plane and a "variable angle fence" ???

I'd prefer a fence with a cutout for the blade, which I could clamp on a larger plane I already have ...

When planing the arch on an ebony violin / viola / cello fingerboard, we use a plastic template.  I could have used something similar when fashioning the sections of that cylinder.

There are lots of ways to approach any task, but I was thinking more along the lines of a #5 plane or a #7 if you're doing longer work, and a purpose cut wooden fence clamped to it.  Make that fence out of 5/4 white oak and it should be large enough for anything you want to do and will take a coat of paste wax like a dream.  Cut out for the blade is easy.

I once made a door out of Lyptus (bad idea :D ) and saved the scraps as I tend to do.  Later on I started making router fences and other jigs out of Lyptus scrap, it works as well as white oak with a coat of wax!

Hey, I can see what you're saying.  Use a nice piece for the fence, miter-rip both edges, clamp it to the plane with my beefy 2" c-clamps, and secure the whole within the vise on the bench.

Refinished the top and lower shelf on this coffee table for my daughter and her boyfriend. It had rough sanding marks and looked like someone spilled a can of walnut stain on the top and tried to wipe it up, it was awful.

So..when I haul a few planks to the shop, I can rotate the saw out to where I can use it...

Wonder how long that bench will stay cleaned off?

We'll see..
