With a sharp blade, you won't even miss a powered machine for small work.

Though finally have a real-ish bench with vises on it. Those 30 staves are ½" x ⅛" and the angle was 6º. I'd need a rabbet plane and a "variable angle fence" ??? I'd prefer a fence with a cutout for the blade, which I could clamp on a larger plane I already have ... When planing the arch on an ebony violin / viola / cello fingerboard, we use a plastic template. I could have used something similar when fashioning the sections of that cylinder.

There are lots of ways to approach any task, but I was thinking more along the lines of a #5 plane or a #7 if you're doing longer work, and a purpose cut wooden fence clamped to it. Make that fence out of 5/4 white oak and it should be large enough for anything you want to do and will take a coat of paste wax like a dream. Cut out for the blade is easy. I once made a door out of Lyptus (bad idea ) and saved the scraps as I tend to do. Later on I started making router fences and other jigs out of Lyptus scrap, it works as well as white oak with a coat of wax!

August 12, 2025Aug 12 Popular Post Ok..what WAS on my bench until a little bit ago... Tip of the iceberg? Yeah, you could say that....need to clear the deck for action! Looking better? Needed to do the same with the Tablesaw.. That Plane Til in the background is where these 2 are headed.. So..when I haul a few planks to the shop, I can rotate the saw out to where I can use it... Wonder how long that bench will stay cleaned off? We'll see..
