Lots happening with our turners this week! Our Patriot Turners- We have a new member at the Patriot who is also a turner! @calabrese55 showed us some of his work when he introduced himself. How about this beautiful segmented turning- Check out his post and give him a Patriot welcome! See the cane and the back story in Steve's post- Our resident ornament expert, @Ron Altier, gave us his impressions on turning bamboo. Ron's conclusions are that's it's probably not the best overall species for turning. In one of our posts, there was a mention of the Lichtenberg burning process. @Gerald was kind enough to do a little research on safety when doing this. The process, when ALL safety precautions are observed, can create beautiful patterns. High voltage is dangerous when we become complacent. My neighbor, the electrical safety training officer in our borough, was electrocuted on the job. Insulation, isolation, incomplete human electrical path and full awareness are a must. Mike Peace shows how to turn a simple but elegant lidded box. He even makes a special chuck to hold one of the pieces. Holding turnings can be challenge. Home made chucks supplement purchased ones. Sometimes adding modifications to a purchased chuck is the answer as Alan Stratton shows us. Looking for an inexpensive gift? How about salt and pepper SHAKERS. Today, I had the greatest pleasure by being able to deliver all of the Ward 57 Christmas gifts to the Forney family. We met with Travis, Michelle and their two youngest sons- Houston and Levi. Great folks! Even though the kids' gifts have been purchased, there is still time to get in on the awesome prizes in our raffle. Your donations will be forwarded to Mr. and Mrs. Forney to help out with raising their 5 young boys. So, be generous, I know they will appreciate it beyond words. Our Patriot Turners- @forty_caliber posted a video from Robo Hippy describing a uniquely shaped gouge. Forty also purchased that tool and showed us a little on how well it worked- Forty also posted some images of his new sander/grinder setup. I really like that flexible shaft idea! @Bob Hodge posed a query about what type of spindle gouge would be good for turning finials. These aren't your ordinary clear coat finishes- New Turning Items- These LED lights are similar to the ones sold by Cindy Drozda. Pretty good price. I have drooled over the Woodturners Catalog just as I used to droll over the Sear's Christmas catalog a long time ago. I want to excel in finials as I move to more lidded vessels, or are they hollow forms? I don't know. Lids with finials, at any rate. I am an experienced, probably middle of the road quality turner with a combination of carbide and traditional tools. I may rough out with carbide yet the last cuts are with a steel tool, as nicely sharpened as I can get it. All of my tools are really too big for the smaller finials, so I am looking at a 3/8 spindle gouge. As I began, the sales guy told me I needed a Sorby Spindle Master so I got one. It works reasonably well, though I have yet to master the Spindle Master. From some videos, it appears that there are the more traditional spindle gouges, then some that are swept back quite a bit. One place calls it an Irish guide. The videos I have watched seem to favor the more swept back gouges. So, I will do OK choosing a brand, but if you have a strong preference, please say so. My real question is whether I should get the more swept back gouge or a more standard gouge for making finials. Thanks Robert

I'm combining several things here. I'm relatively new to spindle turning after fourteen years with bowls and plates. Christmas ornaments for the grandkids - they get a new one each year from G'dad An early attempt at finials. I haven't captured the art or feel for these yet. None are very close to the design in my head or on a nearby piece of paper. We will see how my lighting effect trial works. I drilled through all sides of the blank before turning it, later filling in with somewhat iridescent marbles. Hopefully, they will transmit the Christmas lights through and around. As with most first time projects, I announce that "I could easily do twice as good in half the time if I was to do this again. " Maybe I ought to try to see if there is any truth to it. I like when I can use lacquer and don't have to worry a lot about using something more heavy duty.

A slow week here in our turner's forum. Our Patriot Turners- What’s Coming Up- Click on the following images for links to more information- From the AAW- For The Newbies- Sanding our turnings is time consuming. Changing disks on the Velcro sanding pads just adds to the delay. I know @Gerald has a sanding disk for each grit and that can save some time. It also saves some wear and tear on the Velcro. Here's a video showing shop made sanding disk holders- Wooden scoops are always a nice addition to the kitchen. Guess we will have to wait and see. Some come from YouTube. I noticed recently that the YouTube users rating system seemed different. The "Thumbs Up" choice is listing the number of positive responses. The "Thumbs Down" choice doesn't show any negative votes. Thinking this was a little odd, I went searching for the reason. The first one is sort of a continuation of the previous pepper mill turning video from Mike Peace. This video show turning a "crush grind" mill from a kit. The second video is a great resource for learning to do inside-out turnings. @HandyDan and @FlGatorwood have shown us some of their fantastic pieces in the past. Expand Your Horizons- With ornament season in full swing, displaying these items doesn't necessarily need to be on the tree. Alan Stratton shows us how to make an ornament stand. I was particularly taken by his wire bending jig. In this video, from Turn A Wood Bowl, demonstrates adding a lid to the bowl being turned. The lid has an integral finial. New Turning Item- Over the weekend, I was lucky enough to have the time to enjoy the Vendor's Showcase zoom presentation. This was a 6 hour event, over 3 days, with demonstrations from Cinda Drozda, Lyle Jamieson, Steve Worcester, Todd Raines, Joe Fleming and John Jordan. Each presenter demonstrated their unique turning specialty along with some of the products they use. They took questions from the viewers and had discussions on techniques. One of the presenters, Lyle Jamieson, posted a video of his demonstration. Included was the use of his signature hollowing rig- On our woodworking forum, and this forum as well, dust collection is often discussed. We all know the importance of having a good setup for cleaning the air. I am not sure of this author's credentials for the topic but he makes some good points- Everything Else- Rick Turns list of YouTube woodturning videos from last week- I finished up and delivered some small walnut bowls for the bookkeeper at school. The walnut log came from her parents home. They had many memories of the tree and wanted some way to have the tree live on. These bowls are 5" to 7" in diameter and 2" to 3" deep. Turned with Easy Wood Tools and the rim treatment was done with a Sorby Spiraling tool. The round bowls were finished with mineral oil and beeswax. The natural edge with wipe on poly. Looks like I need to do a better job of dusting before taking the pictures. Safe turning and stay well

A little different format this week. No lathe and different scenery There were some additional comments and information about @HandyDan's finials. Please see his post for what was said- @Kevin Beitz is looking for a non-typical lathe head stock. Check out his request and see if you may know where he can locate one- @Gene Howe gave me a heads-up on a group that is helping combat veterans thru woodturning. Please checkout this YouTube video and share it with others to help get the word out- Rick Turns posted the September woodturning videos list- It's not too early to start thinking about turning those Christmas ornaments. Here, Sam Angelo does a birdhouse- And, Mike Peace let us know about this ornament contest- Mike Peace also added a video on making a tail stock cone center. These are very useful items especially when turning projects that have drilled/hollowed centers. Safe turning

Whew, it's been hot and humid! Finally finished up the electronics repair on the old stereo. Maybe now I can get back to turning! Our Patriot Turners- @RustyFN showed us a beautiful bowl he made from maple, cedar and bloodwood. The colors are fantastic together- Rusty received loads of great comments on this one. Read more about this turning in Rusty's post- A couple of weeks ago, @Gerald posted a link to a video on basic woodturning and what we need to know. A turner/teacher I've been following, Bradley McCalister, has a Monday morning, live Facebook program. Bradley demonstrates tools, techniques and answers questions on a variety of turning subjects. Lots of projects and techniques. A couple of weeks ago, we linked a video by Tim Yoder, where he made a ring. As a follow-up, Tim has posted a two part video on making a bracelet. The metal parts are available as kits, which Tim mentions. Part 2 is linked from Tim's YouTube channel. My turnings always seem neanderthal and clunky. Every once in a while, I'll get something to come out a little better but that is rare. Lately, while practicing hollow vessels, it has become apparent that graceful lines and proportions may not be my forte. I went searching for some ideas to supplement my lack of natural talent and came across two article. The first was from Cindy Drozda. She discussed her finial turnings and what she felt looked "right". It is obvious she is a born artist. The second article expanded on Ms. Drozda's turnings by using mathematics to explain why her turnings are so pleasing. I am not sure who penned this article but for sure it wasn't me. Math is not my strong suit. http://web.hypersurf.com/~charlie2/Turning/DrozdaOnionFinial/DrozdaOnionFinialProport1.html Anyway, the author discusses, in detail, the various ratio and proportion rules that our brains can interpret as "pleasing". In an artist's mind, this all must happen by instinct. Not me! I know, I'm getting carried away here. From the link, above, I was able to create an Excel spreadsheet to instantly calculate the critical dimensions for turning a finial. The image in the spreadsheet was copied from the article. By entering the overall height of the finished finial in the blue cell, the critical dimensions are calculated and listed. I have not tried applying this to a piece of wood, yet. After it was all done, I wondered, is this more like building a model. Shouldn't art be spontaneous? I'm pretty sure Michelangelo didn't use spreadsheets.
