I'm a flintlock guy so this will be an interesting build and firing for me. This is the first time putting one of these together, and hopefully a good introduction in building more from scratch as well. I'll learn to trim, carve perhaps, shave to fit, browning of the barrel etc. been watching YouTube vids on this since there really aren't any instructions that came with it.

January 17, 20224 yr Popular Post Ok, while NOT on my bench..came across these on the last road trip... About half are "Cap & Ball"....mostly shotguns....there was an entire booth of just guns and knives... As for MY bench? A real groovy bunch... L-R: No.8c, No.7c, No. 6c, No. 5-1/2c, No. 4c, and a No.3c.....some a little older than the others.

Especially with a new adventure like this, I am looking forward to jumping into the world of rifle building, been wanting too for a couple years now, ever since I purchased my first flintlock a couple years ago, when I started shooting it, I felt, man, I really want to build these.
January 17, 20224 yr Popular Post Showing my ignorance here, is that a rifle, or a smoothbore, like a musket?

No ignorance there Tom, it may be hard to tell unless you're looking down the barrel, typically these are rifles, although some were made as smooth bores by tradition or for hunting fowl. So ya, mine is a rifle, great question!
January 17, 20224 yr Popular Post OK, last question. Ammo. Does it use modern ammo, or are you going to make your own? Although being in California, the ammo will cause cancer. Maybe make it Nevada, and bring it back home to avoid the cancer risk?

Not to far from the truth Tom, it's amazing they haven't outlawed led ball for target shooting yet. Though we can't use lead period for hunting. I am almost to the point of making my own round ball ammo, it's the traditional ammo. It's almost not even worth it to make it because I can get a box of 100 balls for around 12 bucks, that's a lot of black powder fun. So I would only be making my own round balls for the experience of it really, but it is on my bucket list. I use the .495 for my flintlock, with a .010 patch, it's a tight fit but I'm hitting my targets now. http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/images/product_images/003-6093/003-6093.jpg .495 Diameter 182 Grain Lead Round Balls 100 Count WWW.MIDSOUTHSHOOTERSSUPPLY.COM .495 Diameter 182 Grain Lead Round Balls 100 Count by HORNADY AMMUNITION AND BULLETS Cold swaged from pure lead. You can also use "Sabots" which have been around since the Civil War, more resembling a bullet with an expansion ribbing at the back of the projectile. A lot of hunters prefer the Sabots.
January 17, 20224 yr Popular Post Ok educate me . What kind of ammo do you get if you cannot use lead for hunting?
