August 25, 20214 yr Popular Post So, what does that one cell sketch up have for September? The tool box wiil be hard to top.
September 24, 20214 yr Popular Post Well, I had a pair of corn hole things my grandson wanted/. I did finish them, except he will either paint,,stain or poly..his choice. I made them with a few extras. Under the board is a box that will hold the bags when not in use. There is a score board on each one as well as drink holders. i cleared that off my workbench, now I’m working on a walnut buffet table for my wife. I don’t have any photos yet, but it seems to be coming along pretty well. work…work…work.

September 29, 20214 yr Popular Post I’ve been working on a buffet side table for the wife. On the lower shelf, wife wants an accent piece inserted in the walnut shelf. I’m ready to do it but, as usual, I need to ask a question about wood movement. If you look at the photo, you’ll see a piece of walnut and a piece of butternut. I’m looking to add the butternut as an accent piece. My question is, should I have the grain on the butternut go north to south and the walnut go west to east? Or should I have the butternut grain go in the same direction??? I know wood moves, but not sure if “all” wood moves at the same rate…

Placing it cross grain is typically done using a "bread board" type connection. This will explain it a bit more- https://youtu.be/TFn7JZmyFqk Walnut and Butternut are a very similar species. In fact, around here they call Butternut "white Walnut". I would think their expansion rates would be very similar if you where to join them with all the grain running in the same direction.

Still nest to pay attention to grain orientation but since it is inlay less problem with joint.

Thanks Lew. I was wondering if I could do that or not, just wasn’t sure.

October 21, 20214 yr Popular Post Needed a piece of walnut for some rolling pin holders. Found this in the wood shed Can't remember where it came from. Already surfaced on both sides, 3/4" thick. If I'm careful re-sawing, I think I can get the holders and have enough to make more inserts.
