February 2, 20242 yr Popular Post This is more of a "Headed to my Workbench" I just scored an old Walker-Turner 14" bandsaw and a 10" Walker-Turner cabinet saw at a price that made a close inspection unnecessary. I know they both work but the upper part of the trunion on the bandsaw table is split down the middle. It's Cast Iron and I believe I have a professional that can fix it. My question is, can I just epoxy it together? If it does fail I always have the option of doing it right.
February 3, 20242 yr Popular Post IMO, I'd skip trying the epoxy fix. While epoxy (lab metal) has improved significantly over the years, I don't think this is the place. If it doesn't hold, just that much more to clean/ grind away. I'd seek out someone (fab shop or old school welding shop) that can either TIG weld or even old school DC arc weld. Braze might work too but not my preference for most CI repairs. In a previous life, many years ago, repaired lots of cast including engine blocks using a special alloy nickel rod, old Lincoln AC welder. Mostly cold welds, but sometimes preheated too. Just my .02 which includes tax. BTW, Sweet score on both. Of course pictures will give more credibility

February 4, 20242 yr Popular Post well needed some zen time, so jumped on my lathe and banged out some rollin pins, something about flying chips, throat choking dust, that well makes ya appreciate the day. happy saturday, now to fend for myself for dinna, ole gal is meeting her posse for a glass of wine, yeah, more like 'BOTTLES'' lol rj in az Edited February 4, 20242 yr by knockonit
February 4, 20242 yr Popular Post I've got a small lathe that sits bored in my garage shop area. Perhaps spending a little zen time with it would make it feel a bit better and me too! Don't need a rolling pin, but could make a couple replacement handles for some old worn tools. In college shop our introductory lathe project was to make handles for some lathe tool blanks. Mine was made from some walnut, and was still in use when I came back to teach there a few years after graduation. A parting tool that got used frequently and resharpened so often we eventually tossed it out. Kind of wish I'd kept it for the handle and found a new parting tool blank to put in it. 4D
February 7, 20242 yr Popular Post Bench WAS just a drying Rack. As a lot of handles got a coat of varnish last night Even the old eggbeater I use as a Pilot Hole Drill.. Needed to clear this mess away, and make another mess...as in "Test Drives" No.1 I was finally able to get this one working like it should.. No. 2? This 67 has the round sole..I did price a flat sole for it...ouch almost $40? #3? I used just the curved sole part,,,almost round? #4? Brace is a No. 104 with the EC Stearns tenon cutter onboard... Depth stop needed to be moved.. And that is how far I can go .. Had the brace set aside, as it needed a clean up.. It has a scale to set the diameter of the round tenon/dowel...set at 1/2"....
