This what it should look like when done.

Cool design! Did you heat the PVC to get it to flare out?

Finished this vase a few weeks ago, nothing special but i get some questions on what design program I use. It is not rocket science to spite the space and vacuum  between my ears    :WonderScratch:.......... I tell folks that i use "whiteboard" for my designs and just thought I would share it here.

Gorgeous vase! Really like the design process. Do you re-cut the segments for the addition of the mahogany design?

thanks all for your kind comments and you time to support my addiction .

Yes I used a heat gun. Wish it had more flare but have not glued it up so may try for more.

Mike, many years ago, I ran across a free computer program that helped design lathe shapes. Not sure if you would find it helpful. It's called Lathe Magic. I can post the pdf manual if  you want to see it.

Hi Lew Thank you for the kind offer. I actually have a bowl design program I downloaded at least a couple of years ago today I can't even find it in my computer any more, may even be the same program ?. It was a free down load and it allowed you to draw out a shape then grab nodes and drag and bend around to get the shape you liked and actually gave you a 3d image of the bowl / vase in color even. For some reason I never really used it and landed on the white board thing, (I do not have a computer in the shop which is remote from my house. The board thing  works well for me on several levels i literally throw a profile on the thing, wipe away the parts i don't like and  fill in  from there. It holds all my segment details  moves to my table saw area when cutting segments / staves and lands on the wall behind my lathe when turning. It is like a computer for me that is always on and easily portable, I would be lost without it . Really sincerely appreciate you thinking of me and your kind offer.

thank you   mike

That sounds like the same program. I tried to use it but got frustrated. Love your thought process on the segmented design.

It's a whole new world of precision that the 'ol Chicago electric couldn't provide.  I too, am in love,  😄

We've got a massive red oak, in the yard, that has to come down. I found this "burl" at the base of it and was wondering if it's worth turning??? It's mounted to a 3" faceplate.L1100277.thumb.JPG.06fbdb8fa3d862dd18676dba7409e724.JPGL1100276.thumb.JPG.4824daa801aaae54c6ef26dd6177637e.JPG

Absolutely!!!

Sure but wear a face shield and stay out of harms way.  Can't wait to see what you find in there.

The burl seemed to be a bit damp but I turned it anyway. I used a series of scrapers/bowl gouges to get it to where you see now. When I handle it, it seems to be on the "cool" side. Should I wait for it to be completely dry before applying the finish.L1100280.thumb.JPG.367cc2a18dd5e5fdff0357a20638ba6f.JPG

It would be a good idea to get it dry for finish unless you are using an oil such as walnut oil. On that case can be finished anytime in process.
