October 11, 20241 yr I had a piece of walnut limb , turned two boxes. The first was traditional dark color and the second like your second with a kinda stripped coloration.
October 11, 20241 yr Popular Post I like to watch @tomislavtomasicwoodturning on YouTube. A few days ago he turned a tooth pick with a skew, says it is good practice. I gave it a try. Here is my first attempt. Used a piece of 3/8" birch dowel since I had a small piece. Store bought tooth pick on top. Mine on the bottom with stub from dowel.

October 15, 20241 yr Popular Post In the toothpick video Tomaslav tries for a captive ring. After four tried yesterday I managed it. Here are two pictures with the ring moved from left side to right side for proof. It was fun playing around with it.

October 16, 20241 yr Popular Post Great job @HandyDan . finally got a chance to do final sanding on this sweet gum base. I thought I had lost it when it split from top to bottom in the kiln. It did close up and I put black CA in the crack.

October 16, 20241 yr Popular Post Working on a wave bowl ala John Beaver. Lots of mistakes so far and the next one will be better. Need to glue the bottom of the bowl to the "wave" and the turn the inside. Using a different species of wood, for the wave, introduced several difficulties that I had not considered. As @steven newman says- "we have ways"!
October 16, 20241 yr Popular Post Finishing up on this spalted silver maple bowl. The bottom looks like it has water marks or stains on it. First coat of tried and true on yesterday and buffing it out today for a second coat. It’s about 13” x 4”.

October 18, 20241 yr Popular Post Second turning of a walnut bowl. It is not sanded yet. It has a coat of shellac for sanding sealer on it.

November 13, 20241 yr Popular Post Trying to salvage the second wave bowl. Miscalculated the dimension for cutting the "wave" thickness- way too thin. I'm going to try using the acrylic ink that @HandyDan used on his candle ornaments. Mostly my stuff is left natural colors but thought this design might look OK with some contrasting colors.
