Thanks, Dave!

Nice Lew. The curve couldn't have been done better. I like it!

Lew I have a rotten log out in the bottom. Looking good

Turned out (pun intended) really nice.

After a too-long and unintended absence - I return to find that (as expected😁) Lew is till just killin’ it! Nice pieces one the last few pages.

I just finished. “keepsake” or “tribute” urn. These are not big enough to work for the entire quantity of the cremains of an adult. But I find so many families sprinkle most of the ashes- and many times one or more of the surviving family members want a small amout of ashes to memorialize the person who has passed.

This piece is Claro Walnut from A Cut Above Bowl Co. I get the best wod from them. And the collar and foot are African Blackwood. Tung oi lfinish after sanding to 5000. The pics may be a little jumbled out of order. I had to creat threaded “jamb chucks” to make the collar and to complete the finial. Will keep and mark the threaded finial jamb chuck so that if the finial gets damaged…..it is easier to ship urns withou the finial too- thus the threading.

Glad to post here again. Always a fun friendly group.IMG_2073.jpeg

Wow, that's awesome!

Thank you Fred. I am so fortunate to teach with Kirk DeHeer as his assistant @ John C Campbell Folk Shool (folkshool.org) and when Kirk found out that I bought a threading jig system…. He said “Be in the turning studio at 6 a.m. tomorrow. We will have threading class…”😬.

So…. I learned free hand chasing/threading from the best😁. And that has become something I now enjoy adding in to a piece when I can. It adds an element of impressing customers who are looking at a piece. It is not the fast way …. But it is fun I think.

That's gorgeous Tim. Love It.

Great to have you back Tim. Those are incredible pieces. The threaded finials are amazing. Good on you for the intended purposes. Thanks for sharing with us.

Thanks Dan. Lew, and Dave!

I have a group of smaller forms that were borderline "punky" in spots. Trying something that is a twist on a technique I learned from Chris Ramsey a few years ago for those.....will know if it works when they are ready to turn. And - have the sister piece of this same Claro Walnut that I have on the lathe right now....

Well... it would seem there is nothing!

But in actuality, it is the "finally, it took you long enough" dust collector hookup!

You see, in or about Late 2001 / 2002... I put 6" pvc sewer piping in the Attic.

And then never, even after turning hundreds of Game calls, CONNECTED IT!!

hahaha. I am an idiot!

I still need to make a "box" from Hardboard that I got today. Testing it out, it seems to have pretty decent suction. The DC is the Harbor fright model. The DC is located on the opposite far side of the garage. I double gated it. one at the DC and at the far end (not seen) above the Lathe, in case of leaks in the Attic pipe.

fwiw, I also connected almost every other dust and chip making tool. Busy day, wore me plum out!

Great setup!

Well, I'm on my way...maybe. To a vacuum setup for my lathe. I doing this the cheap way, until I see the value having it. So, to that end I have a vacuum pump used for my vac bagging press that I'll use. So after getting it fixed to hook to my lathe I need a chuck. Lew had posted a video by Sam Angelo showing some he made, so rather than shell out the money for the expensive aluminum ones, I made one (of 2 I've planned). Here it is. This one is 4", and I have a piece of PVC to make one that's 5". I used a faceplate that came with my lathe to do this one; I had never planned to use it and at one point had it loaded up for the scrap metal dumpster....so this worked out fairly well. So this is the first attempt.

Awesome @Fred W. Hargis Jr! Can you show us how you sealed the vacuum line through the headstock/faceplate and into the rotating chuck?

When I get my gizmo I will. It should be here Monday and it was the biggest expense of this effort. I ordered a Robust rotary fitting, it just slips into the hole on the backside of the headstock and I connect the hose to it.

What did you use for the gasket?

Are you asking about the yellow ring? It's a neoprene seal from RubbChucky, they're made specifically for those schedule 40 couplings In some sizes. There's no gasket elsewhere, but all the seams have silicon in them.
