Popular Post Masonsailor
Winter is coming which is our time here in the desert to start our shooting season. This year we will be doing the 1000 and 1500 yard milk jug challenge. I decided this year to make some ammo boxes as presents to my shooting buddy using scraps from the bin. They are walnut and maple. I used the Shaper Origin to make the actual block and holes which worked pretty well. Paul Cal, Fred W. Gerald
That is a very good idea . May have to do some when the rifle comes in. But an after thought is instead of a separate block have the ammo block is part of the box. Was there any differential thinking there? Cal, Fred W. Popular Post Masonsailor
They are removable to be able to use them on the reloading bench as just the block. Popular Post Gerald
Ok that is somewhere I would have to get rid of something to go into but with the Mosin I may have to try. Masonsailor
I ended up converting a 5’ X 9’ closet to make a reloading room. It works pretty well as a one person thing. It gets pretty small with two of us in there but workable. It’s pretty rare it’s more than just me in there. Masonsailor
Gunny you’ll appreciate our approach this year to the milk jug challenge. Last year we did it using .338 Lapua and it turned out not to be that big of a deal. You have 10 minutes to shoot ten rounds and with that gear we both succeeded before the fifth round. So we decided to add some fun and challenge this year and are going to be using M1A’s ! Paul Thad, p_toad and Cal
Gerald
How is a M1A a challenge? Loved shooting that rifle Cal and Gunny
Masonsailor
These are M1A carbines, not M1 Garands and they are definitely a challenge for me at that distance. 😎 p_toad, Cal and Thad
AndrewB
I don't shoot anymore or own weapons... How ever I would have loved one of those things for all the rounds I had LOL would have been nice. p_toad and Cal

Never fired a M1 and only a range demo on the M16. But yes would love to have a M14. p_toad and Cal
Popular Post Masonsailor
I decided to make two more ammo boxes today. I wasn’t up for more cabinet work. I found some interesting poplar on the heap so I resawed it into 3/8” thick pieces and glued them up. Poplar can have some of the most interesting grain and color. John Morris
Very nice! You know I've always thought Poplar is under rated as a primary wood, I always loved that smokey grain it can have once finished. Masonsailor
I agree John. Bummer part is that the really dramatic grain occurs near the stump so you never get a lot. I keep it around for shop fixtures and paint grade exterior wood but I’m always on the lookout for those end pieces. They are great for turning too.
