usually wait until last to add the back to a carcass

As I have been thinking about this, that's what I need to do. Your diagram helps confirm how I can correct (hopefully!). Today I plan to get the top and bottom cut to final depth (as I can get that measurement from the current temporary clamped box), add the edge banding, pre-finish the inside faces, and then try the assembly again with back last.

Much thanks for all the suggestions!

Q:  Why does a chicken coop only have two doors?   A:  Because if it had four doors, it would be a sedan.

On a previous workbench, I screwed two plywood strips at a right angle at one of the corners. Then I could clamp with two sides of the work against the strips. Subject to the size limitations of the bench, that worked well.

So...trying to get the first of four cabinet boxes put together for my mitersaw station. Will be using pocket holes to first connect the sides to the back. Then the top and bottom will fit inside, attached by pocket holes to the sides and back. I'm edge banding the front edges.

After clamping the back in place and using an "extra" top panel clamped across the front I checked for square and it's not perfect. When I check the diagonals for square, I get 36 and 36 1/8. How far "off" is too much?? I was very careful with the cuts, but the plywood isn't top quality (but overall quite good) so that may play into this.

Square is in the eye of the creator. If it fits, does it’s job and you’re happy with it, then it’s square.

Appreciate the encouragement but I am trying to use this shop build to gain skills as my husband has placed a large built-in on my list of projects. Also, with this miter station, I'm planning on adding drawers so want to get the cases as square as possible to make that step "easier" (my experience with drawers may be worse 😅).

Today, only got the tops and bottoms cut, edge banded, and interior finish applied. I'm currently 3D printing some corner brackets that I hope will fit this plywood (ones I had were too snug) and help with alignment. So the story is "to be continued" tomorrow!

That's the spirit Barb! Always do your best!! Always push the envelope of your skill and seek to be better and better. AND YOU WILL SUCCEED!!!

I just scored a shipping crate made of 3/8" rough sawn yellow pine with boards up to 10" wide. I matched them up and there's enough wood to build 8 Beer Boxes.

That's $240 paid in Beer

Right on. Sounds like you’re answering your own question as to “how far off is too much”.

Well it is not on my bench any more. Finished extra shelves for two closest this afternoon. Really kind of rushed it but just wanted to wrap it up. Effort was to use some empty wall and get shelves lower so the short wife could reach. IMG_2377.jpeg

Once again I thank this community for being so complimentary. I try and do my best and once in a while it works out. Now to answer Barbs question, the finish is the regime I like for dark woods, one medium coat of BLO., followed 24 hours later by a coat of dewaxed shellac sealer, followed by 3 coats of polyurethane, your choice of sheen, then in about a week or more i will rub the whole thing out with automotive past wax and 0000 steel wool going with the grain, this last step going with grain is important to keep visible scratch pattern to a minimum, hope this helps if you decide to try and use this method.

Lots of competition for Shop Time this week where I'm trying to get a Basic Load of Beer Boxes who's first CSA offering 4&5 April. The rush is finding a warm day to put the finish on them.

The box on the right is made from a Yellow Pine Shipping Crate I found, and the one on the left is mixed Hard Wood. The cleats are made from Wine Barrel Heads

This is what they will look like on the 4th
