Day late . Computer started an update (failed again). By the time it came back up, it was already Thursday. Our Patriot Turners- @Headhunter posted some new turnings in our "Ringmaster" sub forum. Tony sure can do magic with that Ringmaster jig! Please check out his post at- @BuckeyeHomestead asked about where we get our turning blanks! Click on the image for the link to registration. For The Newbies- Sanding is probably my least favorite part of turning a project. In this video, Sam Angelo, provides some tips he has found helpful. One this I noticed was how he organized his sanding supplies on a cart. I know @Gerald puts most of his items on a wall, within easy reach, behind his lathe. @BuckeyeHomestead asked about turning blanks. Not every turning has to begin with a large chunk of wood. Mike Peace shows us what can be made from smaller branches- Expand Your Horizons- If you have been thinking about expanding your turning repertoire into bowl turning but you are still hesitating, check this video from Tomislav Tomasic. Some really good closeups of tool positions and techniques. Resin casting is still popular and Tim Yoder casts a Banksia Pod for turning a project- New Turning Items- Everything Else- A short video that brought a smile to my face and I hope it does the same for you. Welcome to 2025! Our Patriot Turners- @Ron Altier created an beautiful ornament from a very old piece of wood! Ron tells us about the wood and where he found it, in his post- Some how I missed posting this when it was first added. @Fred W. Hargis Jr asked us our opinion concerning a source for turning blanks. This post has had a bunch of activity. Comments, suggestions and good old fashion drooling have been taking place. Sorry, Fred, for not posting this sooner. Everything Else- From Ron Brown's newsletter: New Year’s Resolutions for Woodturners Here are some woodturner's resolutions to consider for the new year: 1. Improve Tool Sharpening Skills 2. Commit to keeping your turning tools sharp and well-maintained for smoother cuts and more precise work. 3. Experiment with New Wood Types 1. Challenge yourself to try different wood species, exploring their unique characteristics and how they behave during turning. Turn wet wood cut less than 48 hours ago. Turn a resin project. 4. Expand Techniques and Projects 5. Push your creativity by trying new techniques 1. Such as hollowing, segmented turning, or use only a skew from beginning to end. 2. Try making a bowl from a board 1. Using a band saw to cut the rings at an angle 2. Cut rings at an angle with a thin parting tool. (There is a jig for that!) 6. Organize and Clean the Workshop 1. A tidy, well-organized workspace is essential for productivity and safety. Make it a goal to clean and reorganize your tools and workspace regularly. 1. Donate unused turning tools to your turning club or give them to a buddy just starting out. 2. Saw dust can be a hazard, this is a good time to sweep it away. 7. Focus on Safety Practices 1. Always wear appropriate safety gear and continually assess your turning practices for improvements to minimize the risk of accidents. Always wear breathing protection when sanding. 2. Stand to the side when turning in case something detaches from your blank. Be out of its path. 8. Master Finishing Techniques 1. Experiment with different types of finishes, oils, film such as varnishes, lacquers, water based, etc., Pick one you haven’t used. Enhance the beauty and durability of your turned pieces. 9. Set Monthly Goals 1. Set realistic, achievable goals each month to keep you motivated, such as completing a specific project or mastering a new turning technique. 10. Join a Woodturning Community 1. Connect with other woodturners through online forums, local clubs, or workshops to share tips 2. learn new techniques, and be inspired, YouTube videos are a good source. 3. Join the AAW if you are not already a member and read their magazine cover to cover. 11. Pick a time, once a month, to have other turner(s) over for a couple of hours and share what you’ve discovered recently. 12. Document Your Work 1. Take photos of your finished pieces and document the process. This will help track your progress and create a portfolio to showcase your craftsmanship. 13. Teach or Share Your Knowledge 1. Consider teaching others the basics of woodturning or sharing your knowledge with beginners, whether through workshops, tutorials, or informal mentoring. Safe turning

I just saw this on FB marketplace. He advertises a Bobcat 72" scoop (as full as he can get it) for $35. It's all hardwoods from sawmill cutoffs. It's not far from me and would certainly provide a lot of practice wood. Has anyone did anything like this, and if yes how did it work out? I could probably get some bandsaw boxes out of it as well.

I was given a 10’ cedar log today. Got it cut up, pith removed and ends sealed. Will need to start rough turning soon.

Our Patriot Turners- Last week, @RustyFN showed us his basket weave illusion vase. He added to his post the jigs he used to create the weave lines- @Gerald posted a Christmas tree turning that he embellished. Check it out. I really like the star topper! @Steve Krumanaker makes items for a local artisan who works in wool. Can't believe something hasn't been released for the holidays. Everything Else- From Ron Brown's weekly newsletter- Easier The Second Time Most folks are afraid to try new things. Turners are no different. 1) Fear of the unknown a. Your imagination presents all kinds of scary scenarios. You aren’t sure how long something might take, or what else you could end up needing. You don’t understand the process. b. You are not sure exactly how to get started or what steps to take and in which order. 2) Fear of failure a. Probably the number one reason people never get started. b. Your vivid imagination will show you all kinds of ways it could go wrong, how you might get hurt, or how you might damage your equipment in the process. 3) Fear that it’s not what you are used to and that is uncomfortable a. I know folks that only turn bowls because that is what they are used to. It’s the same with some pen-turners. We all have things we are very comfortable making and have become very accomplished at those items. The thought of making something different seems uninviting. When you finally work up the courage to try something different, you are stepping out of your comfort zone. Since we are all creatures of habit, new stuff isn’t what you are used to and it feels awkward. The first time you try, it is usually as hard as you imagined it would be. In Order To Learn New Things, We Must Be Willing To Fail. The first time you mainly learn what not to do. The second time you already know mostly what not to do and you can think about improving your sequence to gain a better result. From the third time on, you can focus on alternative techniques and tools. After that, if you are still interested in making more of this new item, besides improving your techniques and methods, you can work on variations, larger, smaller, additional elements, etc. John Jordan, a very well know turner who recently passed, always said “Life is too short to turn crappy wood.” I recommend you actually do use crappy wood the first couple of times because failure is part of succeeding. You shouldn’t have to fail with expensive materials. I recommend that you step out and try something new this week. I think you will be surprised at how much fun it is. You never know what you might like making once you try it. Safe turning

Just about the time of the year when I start having dreams of beginning another school year- and all the things that can go wrong! Our Patriot Turners- @calabrese55 posted one of his segmented bowls in the "What's On Your Weekend Agenda". I love the combination of colors! His post has more images. Check it out here- @Headhunter posted a really neat setup for assisting in making square cuts across a log. He posted it in our "General Woodworking" forum but said it was OK to share it here Looks like it can be helpful for us turners- @Gerald finished up the turnings and dice boards he was commissioned to make I never hear of either of these items. Thankfully, Gerald explained their uses. Gerald also started a discussion about project ideas. He wondered how/if we saved pictures/drawings to be inspirations for our own turnings. He received lots of great comments and examples. Please check out his post and add your thoughts to the others- We are still getting entries on out "What's On Your Lathe" forum. This one from @forty_caliber @John Hechel is passing on his turning skills to a younger generation. What a wonderful way to keep turning alive! This time the turners make their own interpretation of a cherry burl hollow form- Several of our turners use paint as a way to embellish their turnings. Mike Peace has ventured into air brushing as a way to enhance his turnings. This video is his introduction- Fractal Burning was all the rage for a while. It can be dangerous if all safety precautions are not strictly followed. Well, Tim Yoder has found a safe way to create the patterns- Spoiler Alert- Heads up laser owners! The weather turned out to be much nicer today than the weather man said it would be. A balmy 73. I decided to get this build done today instead of tomorrow. Box with shelving and rear baffle removed. Removed and discarded OEM low voltage fan. Installed 110v 210 CFM axial fan. Air flows to the rear of the box into a plenum. Air is diffused through the vent at the top. Baffle reinstalled. Hygrometer / Thermostat power distribution control. Fan is wired to the hygrometer, light bulb is wired to the thermostat. Set controls to run the fan until it drops below 10% RH. The light bulb runs until the temperature reaches 110. These are initial settings and will need to be adjusted based on actual performance. Sensor I used a 4 1/2" hole saw to make two ventilation holes. I installed a 4" louvered vent with bug screen on the outside and a dust collection blast gate on the inside of each hole. The blast gate provides air flow adjustment. Added some rough turned bowls. Using a moisture meter, each was marked with today's reading.

Typical August weather here this week and it's expected to get hotter as the week goes on. Good excuse to spend time in the basement shop. Our Patriot Turners- @Steve Krumanaker moved from hollow vessels to bowls. Steve posted a gorgeous maple bowl for us to slobber over- The grain and natural combine to make a magnificent piece! Steve tells us about this turning in his post- @forty_caliber created a lovely vase from a pecan log. He received lots of positive comments on this one. I especially like the shape and can't wait to see the results when he adds the finish! Check out more in his post- @HandyDan received a request to duplicate a spindle for a friend. Dan does these freehand- without the aid of a duplicator! They sure look good. Please see his post for more about the wood he used and some of the great comments- @AndrewB also received a turning request. This one was for a bowl. I really like his choice of woods. Andrew uploaded several progress photos in his post on this turning- What’s Coming Up- Received this information from Lyle Jamieson. If you or your club are considering personalized virtual instruction, this might be the way to go. His maple "Rock" bowl was given the "Judges Award" at a show presented by a local art council. We all know Steve has awesome talent and now his community does, too. From The Internet- Rick Turns has the July list of YouTube turning videos ready- Mike Peace added another sanding video. He describes additional techniques non-spindle pieces Along those lines, last week I mentioned using Abranet sanding screen. I found a website that has a similar product and not as expensive. These folks carry a wide variety of turning accessories- https://woodturnerswonders.com/ Everything Else- Several weeks ago we featured a project finish called "water droplets". The latest issue of American Woodturner magazine (August 2018) has a How-To for doing that finish. As it is a copyrighted article, I won't put it here but you may be able to get a copy of the magazine to see additional information about this technique. I finally finished up the little mixed media turning. It didn't come out like the picture I had in my head- but then my turnings rarely do! The base is a piece of walnut. Overall height is about 5" and the "glass" is about 1.25" in diameter at the top. Finished with wipe on poly. I call it "Half Full"- Safe turning

On garbage day I found a nice slab of wood someone set out. I stopped and picked it up and I think it is Cherry. Measures 3" X40" and 8" at the wide end and 6" at the small end. That should make some nice bowl blanks. Lucky day for me.

Disclaimer: I have no connection to this lumber supplier and never been to their site nor purchased from them. I only recently stumbled on to them based off a post on CL. They do offer some interesting package bundles (when available) and seem to specialize in thinner stock as well as turning stock. They offer an Online Store as well.
