    Mothers day

Well daughter asked me to make something for her to give to her mom so I figured it would be a good time time to try some stack text. I also thought why not try a molding tool path as well. Still need to do more sanding and finish it but so far here what I have done…

  6. This is going to be my next carving project and I'll silver-gild this instead of gold-gild. I'll also have to do something with the edge molding shown here.
  7. The picture should tell the story... This one piece took maybe twenty minutes or less to shape. So after I cut the outside away from the waste I then can put screws in next to the edges as I cut the waste away. Can't install more screws along the edge till I cut away the area. It would be guessing where the screws go before I cut away all the waste material. As I am cutting away more waste I can then add more screws to that area before I continue cutting away more waste wood. Once I have all the waste wood discarded I should have all the screws installed holding the backer board to the carving . Once all the pieces have been separated from each other I will then install all the screws again . I then take out the piece I will carve..Once all the pieces are stained and finished after all the screws are installed for the last time only the gap of the scroll saw blade will remain and since all the edges have been shaped and tapered the gap will not be noticeable. I went back out to the shop and took another piece out and shaped it in about 15 minutes. Not near done with the them yet but just enough to so I can get each piece mating up with each other so all will still look look one board when finished. I always use a pilot hole for the screws so there will be no busting the wood causing more extra work... the correct size hole just hold a sheet metal screw behind the drill bit and only the tip of the threads should show.... I use a sheet metal screw type screw for there in no taper to the threads except at the tip...If I don't forget I will try to post more pictures as I get more wood shaped...
  8. As you know I am making my daughter a couple of end tables. My wife suggested I make a couple of coasters with their alma maters in them. The roommate graduated from Lafayette, the Ragin Cajuns…I hope to do my daughters sometime today.

    who, who?

A friend from my home town posted this as a county fair exhibit. Pretty cool.
  10. Thursday morning and lots of smoothing to do This is the hardest part of carving and this is what separates the boys from the men for not leaving any scratch marks on the carved pieces. Gene I used the same number blade for cutting the picture out then also for cutting all the pieces apart. # FD- SR 5 flying dutchman blade from The Wooden Teddy Bear. com It has nothing to do with all those teddy bears for it a wood working site. Order them 1 gross at a time and they will be much cheaper than the blades from the big box stores. I built this blade holder the week I bought the 788 in 98 or 99? I used 1/2" pvc with wood plugs in the bottoms. Can't remember for sure but there must be more than 20 tubes for blades and I bought some of all I could find to buy, anywhere........ fast forward, all those blades are still in that nice little storage container. Only two other blades I ever use is an Olson blade for metal sawing with the scroll saw...which has no teeth at the bottom of the blade sticking up from The Teddy bear.com and an Olson precision cut blade for cutting away the out side of the carving pieces I don"t need. Its also a reverse tooth # 5 but it saws and last longer but when new it wants to go faster????Only word I have for it as it is more agressive but not as easy to precision cut when needed on inside sawing!!!! And its from The Teddy bear.com also. This carving I\m working on now I used the same blade. This bull I'm shooting at you are my own opinions. Lot of people out there has more opinions than they got brains and again this is just my thinking... Lots of wood to smooth so I'll check in when more has been done.

    Work(s) in progress

In the "what's on your lathe" topic I mentioned that I had a piece of brass to make some ferrules. I made around 20 1"od and same for 3/4" od ferrules. Mostly hacksaw and file work and it sure made me wish I had a small metal lathe like Dan. A while back I turned some mallets for a local wood carver and he mentioned he'd like to have a set of handles as well. That's what the ferrules are for. I don't really like commission work but he was pretty adamant he wanted me to do them. Shot him what I thought was a high price and he increased how many he wanted, go figure. He wanted them out of Osage, same as his mallets. Fortunately I had enough to do them. The ferrules are a press fit and that takes some time to get right but once that's done the handles are a pretty simple profile. He said he wanted a set of matching handles, ended up to be 16 total. I told him "matching" was a relative term and there would be minor differences. He said that's why he want's hand made. It is his intention to only use them when he's demoing. 11 more to go, he doesn't know it but I intend to burn his name and a small graphic on the handles. The burn lines will be different on each one to help him identify them if the edge is hidden. Had a minor set back this morning though, blew a tire.

    Go Tell the Bees...

My next carving project will to be to try to carve/gild this book cover illustration in a concave relief pattern. I want to make it between 6-8" in size. I'll reduce the size to what I want. Can you tell me the name of this book???

  14. My dad recently removed some old built-in cabinets from their 1900 vintage old homeAnd salvaged the wood shelves and sides from them. This appears to be Pine based on the couple of knots I found, but, at over 100 years old, is definitely different from today’s Pine offering at the big box stores. The grain is tight and I love the color of the aged wood. I found that the age and dryness of this made it a bit brittle to carve but managed to make this. I just sketched it and chipped away. No pattern here to follow. I am carving for the first time in nearly 20 years so things aren’t going all that smoothly. This was a piece to get some practice. I am getting better again but slow. I plan to send this to my mom as a surprise during this COVID thing.

    Japanese Silkwood Spoon

    From the album: Spoon Carving

A friend of mine at work gave me tree limbs that he cut from his Japanese Silk tree, and I found some nice wood in those limbs. Just finished this large cooking spoon this afternoon and put the first coat of "Tried and True" on it. My third attempt carving spoons from green wood. It's getting addictive.

    Director Baton Case

One of our choir members came to me and stated our director had a baton he had custom made while in school. He would leave it on the table behind him and it would constantly fall. He mentioned to this indvidual that he hoped it would not break. She came to me and asked if I could make something to hold his baton. Well this is what I came up with. HE LOVED IT!!!! I found this treble cleff with cross and loved it - thought it was so appropriate Designed this lid in Photoshop This is after carving into lid and sealing with 3 coats of poly This is the staining process - glob it on, and wipe it off - LOL This is after wiping the stain off - stain on surface wipes clean since it was sealed, stain stays in the carved areas (i use gel stain for this) I then created an insert to hold the baton - decided to hand carve this as well Completed case!!!

    Another Carving - WIP

Here is another carving I am working on for a gal at work. She is Puerto Rican and always stops by my office to give me a short spanish lesson. I will be retiring in July and she asked if I would carve her a little figure to keep in her office to remind her of me - how sweet! Anyway I decided to do something more than a little figure - so I am doing The Lords Prayer - but in Spanish. Here is the progress thus far - the wheat on the sides are burnt and shaded, but I covered them with masking tape to protect them while I carve the rest of the piece. Will post again once complete.

    Carved Bottom

In doing ringmaster bowls it is sometime difficult to decorate the bottom on lathe and the many stripes of the glueup would make it a little blurry. On one of these I tried something different. I carved a flower and burned the background to make it stand out.Woods used are cherry, walnut, river birch and exotic I cannot remember.
