As a side note I was very dismayed to read somewhere John Beaver lost everything home & shop in the LA fires. Very sad .........his work is truly amazing Grandpadave52 and lew 2 Quote

Popular Post kreisdorph Posted February 25 Popular Post Report Posted February 25 This piece of box elder came from the top of the tree. I grabbed it to burn because it was only about 4" in diameter. I cut some to length and split it. That's when I noticed the spalting. I saved a couple of sections to turn. Here's a vase from that log. It's 6" x 3", finished with Myland's. Popular Post kreisdorph Posted February 25 Popular Post Report Posted February 25 Cherry bowl, 8" x 3.5". Finished with Tried and True Original. This piece was semi-green. It was a half-log that had been sitting out for about 2.5 years. Fred W. Hargis Jr, Headhunter, Grandpadave52 and 5 others 8 Quote

Popular Post RustyFN Posted March 17 Popular Post Report Posted March 17 I know a guy that owns a sawmill. He runs it with his two sons. They gave me a walnut slab 24” by 7’ by 2” thick. They also gave me two spalted curly maple boards 8” by 7’ by 4/4. I made each one a walnut bowl with a maple segmented ring from the wood they gave me. The bowl is around 9” in diameter. My wife wanted a chip and dip platter and I was able to make it from the walnut slab. The platter is around 21” in diameter. Gordon, lew, Grandpadave52 and 5 others 4 1 3 Quote
lew Posted March 17 Report Posted March 17 Good on you, @RustyFN!! Those are both beautiful. I don't think I've ever seen curly maple that had spalting. RustyFN and Grandpadave52 2 Quote
RustyFN Posted March 17 Report Posted March 17 It looked like a lot more spalting after it was cut into segments and glued into a ring. Grandpadave52 and lew 2 Quote
