January 21, 20251 yr Popular Post I managed to finish a couple of pieces when it warmed up. Now we're back in the deep freeze. White ash bowl, embellished with India ink. 8" x 7" x 4", finished with Tried and True Original. I turned this green and it moved quite a bit, as expected. Bummer about the crack.
January 21, 20251 yr Popular Post White ash live edge bowl from the same tree as the previous bowl. 9" x 3", finished with Tried and True original.
January 21, 20251 yr Popular Post And an ugly little sugarberry bowl. This one should have burned in a bonfire I had over Christmas, but this piece didn't burn. Might as well turn it!

January 22, 20251 yr @kreisdorph Beauties all! I really like the thin wall thickness on the first one!!

January 23, 20251 yr Popular Post Just a little branch bowl. I sneezed and gouged the inside. Kinda bummed haha
January 23, 20251 yr @kreisdorph. Do you have a picture of what the live edge ash started as? I'm kinda new on the block and trying to do my mental gymnastics as to how you mounted that to turn out. Thanks!

It was in my front yard leaning towards the house. I've been meaning to cut it down for a couple of years. I don't have a picture of the rough piece before I turned it, but I have the next best thing. Here's a couple of pics of the other half of the crotch. I start just about everything between centers with a spur drive. Edited January 24, 20251 yr by kreisdorph

Keeping the bark on is a real challenge and @kreisdorph did an excellent job doing it. Trees cut down in the late fall and Winter are supposed to hold their bark best.

Yes some woods are better than others for the bark staying on. I found Bradford Pear to be a good one.

The bark on this ash is staying put very well. However, the bark itself is very brittle compared to walnut or cherry. It's easy to knock pieces off.
