Here are some pictures of the offcuts from the bowl. It dose have a lot of the working characteristics but it doesn't have the grain patterns. It's also kinda glittery. It probably is wenge or a verity of it. Thanks for your input.

Cherry calabash style bowl. Approx 6" diameter and 2.5" tall. Probably should be described as a "palewa" bowl as it is not very tall. First successful rounded bottom however the bottom is a little too thin for a traditional calabash. Gloss poly is also questionable as the correct finish.

I typically turn bowls using a mortice. This style lends itself to a tenon to be able to more easily create the traditional thicker bottom. Also, I think the top should have curved in a little more.profile1.jpg

Thanks, Fred!

That turned (no pun intended) out awesome Lew. We're always are worse critics. Some amazing color and grain for cherry. Thanks for sharing.

My thoughts, exactly. I love it!

Nice!  I like it!  I get more comments when I use a glossy finish.  Most ask how it was achieved.

Several weeks ago I was able to cut up an old black cherry stump in my brother’s backyard. Most of it turned out to be too far gone to use. As I was going through what I brought home trying to find some good chunks. I originally tossed this piece into the burn pile but retrieved it.  So glad I did as I was pleased with the results albeit not your traditional bowl.
A lot of the cracks had to be CA glued to keep it together, I used med brown ca glue. Then finished it with a spray bomb Lacquer.
