February 3, 20251 yr Popular Post Another one bites the dust...........Finished this vase last week. Construction is Sassafras and resin, measures 6.5 x 10.5 inches. The challenge here was building the upper portion , above the resin, as a staved build. Previously I had only used segmented construction for the upper build but never really didn't like the style mix, staved bottom , segmented top. The problem at least for me was figuring out and cutting the upper staves with geometry considerably different(length & thickness wise) than the lower staves. It took a little more effort on my part but it worked out. The problem arose however from the ancient Sassafras I had in stock for better than 25 years. There were a couple of cracks, checks , defects or what ever they are that showed up at the very lower part of the vase. I tried to salvage it by turning away some of the material but got no cooperation from the Sassafras. As a result it is not going to the local gallery I partner with but made my better half smile. Her contribution of the flowers really makes it look really nicer that it is. She is still working on improving me

Thanks Dave I put a bunch of time into this piece. I thought the upper staves would be quick and easy like the lower staves...NO short and stubby are a little different for reasons I am still working on. I didn't plan on having a resin base but I was not happy with an unbalanced look so added the resin base. Then the cracks at the lower end came out to play working on the resin base area I seriously thought of parting off an inch or two of the lower end and casting a new resin base. At that point I had waaaaaay to much time and energy into the piece. I was on the ragged edge of getting a tee time for FRISBEE GOLF. OK I will explain Frisbee golf if a situation where I imagine the work piece is a frisbee and the trash barrel is the 19th hole. I am pretty good at frisbee golf my handicap is nearly scratch Thanks for your cherished support ...........Fred that goes for you toooooooo Thank you Edited February 4, 20251 yr by calabrese55

February 11, 20251 yr Popular Post Ash hollow form, finished with Myland's. This was turned green from an ash tree I cut down in December.
February 11, 20251 yr Popular Post Basic walnut bowl. I lost this one in the shop for a while. Discovered it yesterday and finished it. It's about 8" x 3.5" (I haven't measured it yet). Finished with Tried and True Original.

This one should have burned in a bonfire I had over Christmas, but this piece didn't burn. Might as well turn it! I guess my wife didn't think much of this bowl. She used it as a kitty litter scoop.
February 11, 20251 yr Popular Post This end grain turning started out as a hollow form. After I cut through the side, I decided it would make a nice bowl. 4" x 3.5", finished with Tried and True Original.
February 11, 20251 yr Popular Post @kreisdorph I like the shape on the hollow vessel. The way you finished the foot on the second one is really nice! The spalted one- Oh the humanity and humiliation . Love the end grain rice bowl, super thin walls!!
