August 25, 2025Aug 25 Popular Post Well that mystery wood I thought was mulberry, I now believe is something else. First bowl from the limb. About 6" x 2", turned with EWT products, finished with Yorkshire Grit and Hampshire Sheen.

A lot of our Elms "branch out" with several large upright trunks. This tree was one trunk 20 feet, or so, before it started to branch out. But, you are right about the grain. These are a couple of other, older elm turnings of Chinses elm and I can see similarities. The older ones have darkened over time.
August 25, 2025Aug 25 Popular Post I agree with Fred. Looks like Elm to me too. That's a nice finish too.
September 3, 2025Sep 3 Popular Post The red oak bowl is finished. Approximately 10" x 3". Inside and outside sanded to 320 grit. On the outside I used Yorkshire Grit to refine the finish. Hard to see in the pictures but the difference between the 320 grit and Yorkshire grit is very noticeable. Mineral oil wipe down on inside and out. Sorby texturing tool used for the embellishment band. Other than that turned completely with Easy Wood Tools products.
September 10, 2025Sep 10 Popular Post I am trying to learn how to make the vessel of illusion by Trent Bosch. My first try was less than successful for the illusion but I didn't want to waste the little "outside" container. The spalted sycamore has really nice designs. I was able to part off the tenon on the turning, remove the "upper half" and refine the shape to end up with this. About 5" x 2". No real finish other than the oil from the Yorkshire grit sanding paste. The original hollowing and all turning done with Easy Wood Tools. The shape I started with was similar to this one but a little more flatter on the top/bottom sides. And I reshaped the circumference point on the sycamore.

The spalting is spectacular and even further enhanced by your finished design vision. Beautiful vessel..
