@Gerald how do you make the "cross hatch" on the handles?

Really simple with the Sorby Spiral Master. Set it on about 2 on one side and rotate to other side and repeat.Just remember to keep the bevel up when you switch sides.

I must be doing something wrong. Every time I try it I get multiple unevenly spaced lines. I'll keep practicing.

Also curves affect the pattern. Just try adjusting a little at a time and when it hits try the other side. Oh pattern is also speed related. NMT 700 for the large and 400 to 500 for the mini. Sometime it seems slower is better.

Been experimenting between 300-500. My tool is the Sorby full size.

Playing with making mushrooms using branches.  I put them between centers using measured centers since thw[e branches are usually curved and also oblong in shape.

Go to town turning one.  They are addicting and the fun part---no two need to be alike.

Apologize for the dumb question: what are "measured centers"....I've not heard that phase before.

I measure to the center in a few places because the branch is not symmetrical.  If an object is round or square a center finder is the cat's meow.  Placing them between those centers is the best way to center the overall piece.    I wouldn't be so picky but I'm trying to keep the bark on the edges so I include the bark in the measurements..  I choose which end I want to use as the bottom and cut it flat so it will stand straight.

Every turner should have one of these but it doesn't help in this instance.

We are rapidly approaching the time of year when I have to change the name of my shop building to "Surface of the Sun". Already getting HOT down here in Texas. Even with the AC running, the building in un-inhabitable for most of the day. I can usually get 3-4 early morning hours but I'm scheduled to work at those times during the week. Expect to see fewer posts in this thread and new posts in the Woodturners forum. This condition will run through September...ish.

Sounds like a insulation problem

Indeed.  A problem that can only be fixed by throwing money at it.  Since I'm banned from the ladder a contractor is about my only option.

I used a 12 TPI - 3/8" texturing tool I got from www.peachtreeusa.com.

I just got it today as a matter of fact.  very heavy duty and seems well made.

3 down one to go.

Worked with the large sycamore blanks again today. Unfortunately, the large bowl blank (26") on the lathe was rotten to the core and it was moved to the fire pit. Punky band longways through the middle. I was able to penetrate in several places with an ice pick to a depth of 6" with one finger. Deemed unsafe to turn.

Number 3 cut into smaller blanks. This allowed me to cut out the rot.
