May 12, 20233 yr Let there be light. Added some lighting to the lathe area. I've been on the lookout for a used dentist light but they are few and far between. Settled on a 50W flood and a 50W articulated spot "dock" light. .40
May 13, 20233 yr Buggy pine hollow form practice. Some of the worst wood ever to cross the shop threshold. Several of the bug holes perforate the form. Wall thickness down to 3/8". About 8" in diameter. .40
May 14, 20233 yr I keep forgetting to take pics of what is on lathe so here it is. Working on a commission of 25 dice cups.

May 14, 20233 yr Thanks guys. I did a demo yesterday for the Western NC Woodturners on the he basics of platter making. It is interesting to me that we all tend to think "bowl" when we see a piece of wood - but there are often pieces that might be thinner than we want for a bowl - and a platter does not always come to mind as another option. Platters do take a couple more steps, but the reward is that you expose more face grain that can be viewed at once. So if it is a particularly striking piece for some reason...platters win!😊 Edited May 14, 20233 yr by teesquare
May 14, 20233 yr Popular Post Finished turned and started sanding and finishing routine. ~9x4 pecan calabash. Sanded with 80 grit and applied Seal Coat sanding sealer. This one soaked up so much sanding sealer that I'm going to give it a day or two to dry. This one has some nice grain. .40
May 14, 20233 yr Popular Post I assisted Kirk DeHeer @ John C Campbell for a week long class. One of the things we did waste make turned object look like old, antique pieces by applying the Metal Effects system from Craft Supply. This is a system o f a primer, and 3 different paints that contain actual metal. There are copper, iron and bronze to choose from. Then - 2 different acidic sprays to apply - which activate the oxidization/corrosion to make the object look like an ancient metal vessel. I chose to make a bowl to donate to the NC WoodWorker annual raffle/fundraiser that is bronze on the inside - but natural edge cherry on the outside. Sound weird? Yep....But I think I like the effect......The first pic is after the application of the bronze paint but before the acid/reactant. Second pic shows the interior and the third is the exterior.

Beautiful! Love the background view of the mountains, too!
May 19, 20232 yr Not the lathe exactly.... Installed Carter guides on the bandsaw and installed a 3/4 3TPI Timberwolf silicon steel blade. Adjusted using the Alex Snodgrass method. Tested on a seasoned pecan 5" box blank. Wow! What a difference. No drift or wobble. Surface looks like it came off the jointer. .40
May 29, 20232 yr Popular Post Not on the lathe but just came off. Just cannot get used to taking pics of what is on lathe. There are 24 of a commission of 25 dice cups. Yet to have logos lazered. now these have a story. Several years ago the wife gave away some turnings I was not ready to part with. So taking an idea from Dixie Biggs is these friendship bowls. She aid she makes them for when friends visit. I make these and she gifs them to friends or when we need extra gift. These are in persimmon. Most likely will dye all. Collars of Walnut and Bois D’arc will remain as is. The others will get carved and dry brush painted as the one in front. That one in the middle was my effort to mimic candle wax dripping down.
