That’s gonna be neat!

Hays county pecan crotch 14".  Spent some time with "Army of Angry Beavers" a.k.a (D-way 3/4" irish grind gouge) this morning and roughed out a large pecan blank that needed quite a bit of material removed due to the wavy exterior of the tree.  I'm convinced that if I had no limitation on available torque I could take an 1" off the diameter in a single pass with this tool.

Fantastic fiddle-back grain running through the bottom.  Chatoyance is noticeable in this area.

Into the kiln at 45% moisture content.

That grain contrast is gonna be even more beautiful when the finish hits it!

Not on the lathe yet but it won’t be long. Got some Bradford pear yesterday and processed it today. I will start rough turning in a couple of days. Have a few crotch pieces in there.

You're gonna be busy!

  • 2 weeks later...

Working on a platter to eventually get engraved. Engraving looked good on the test piece but awful on the platter. Back on the lathe for sanding and try again.

1st time out in the shop since recovering from Covid.   Worked with a difficult chunk of pecan.  Riddled with bark inclusions and post beetle holes, I ended up turning away more than I wanted to.  The big chunk in the top photo ended up flying off the lathe and would have hit me if I wasn't standing to the side.

I moved it to the kiln to dry but give this one 1 chance in 5 of making it to the finish process.  I would be a shame to waste such pretty grain but it is what it is.

I've had some pretty gnarly ones survive by soaking them in the soap/water solution before going to the drying box. Once in the box, checking regularly for cracks and using CA before they get too far along.

It amazes me that that inclusion on the side did not come off when turning. I like to epoxy (with color added) those on pecan.

Started 2nd turning pecan bowl.  Experimental knot repair using epoxy and diopside.  Hopefully these small crystals won't pose too much of a problem to cut.

Here is one for the "You probably can but should you" file.  I needed a bushing to mount a leather wheel on the Sorby Pro-Edge.  7/16 ID 1/2 OD x 3/4 long.

Turned from an aluminium spacer that I had on hand.  Used #3 Hunter carbide in sheer scrape orientation at 1700rpm to do the turning.  Chuck in tailstock with drill to form the ID

Works like a champ.  The green stuff is an abrasive dressing on the leather wheel.  Takes the edge from scary sharp to don't look at it wrong.

Love it!!

What is OFF you lathe this weekend..................

Sometimes you get the test before you get the lesson. This was one of those times .

Thanks to the late great Meat Loaf for the following words  from  Paradise by the Dashboard Light to  tell the rest of the story.

OK, here we go, we got a real pressure cooker going here,
Two down, nobody on, no score, bottom of the ninth,
There's the windup, and there it is, a line shot up the middle,
Look at him go. This boy can really fly! He's rounding first and really
Turning it on now, he's not letting up at all, he's gonna try for
Second; the ball is bobbled out in center, and here comes the
Throw, and what a throw! He's gonna slide in head first, here he
Comes, he's out! No, wait, safe-safe at second base,
this kid
Really makes things happen out there.
Batter steps up to the
Plate, here's the pitch-he's going, and what a jump he's got,
He's trying for third, here's the throw, it's in the dirt-safe at
Third! Holy cow, stolen base!

He's taking a pretty big lead out There, almost daring him to try and pick him off. The pitcher
Glances over, winds up, and it's bunted, bunted down the third Base line, the suicide squeeze is on!

Here he comes, squeeze play, it's gonna be close, holy cow, I think he's gonna make it!

Stop right there!

While finishing the bottom of the bowl it was just a simple catch in the resin and image.png.8c161cd1169ec2aa39eb88774ccfe76a.png
