lew
Been one of those days. I hate them. Time for a good "strong" beverage, neat. steven newman

Concussed? Hey take care and watch closely...I know you half tongue-in-cheek jest about this, but it is very realistic you may have a slight concussion. You (we) aren't as young as we once were so some things can occur more easily than they once did. watch for signs anyway...don't be "hard-headed" about it...ooops poor choice of words in this instance. steven newman, HARO50 and p_toad 2
steven newman
well, went to the shop for a test run....one drawer is completed, and in the clamps...second drawer needs those clamps in the morning....then a bit of trimming....and sand them smooth.. only hold up, is waiting on drawers to be assembled long enough for the glue to have cured out. Then wait on clamps to be available.... Stay tuned..you may like this part... lew, Cal, HARO50 and 1 other
Popular Post steven newman
Ok, Pastor took the Boss and I out to lunch, today. Extremely happy with his desk!. Finally got back home, got out of the Sunday-go-to-meeting clothes, and into the shop clothes.... Got the clamps off one drawer, and did a glue up on another, using all six clamps.. Worked on the drawer the clamps came off of....and set it aside, had a Drawer to assemble... Made a big batch of Maple Noodles, ploughing grooves for drawer bottoms.. Got the front and both sides grooved, then laid out a few dados.. Even made a "knife wall" for the mitre saw to follow.....then some chisel work.. Then a dry fit.. This was the easy one....I had to bevel the edges of the plywood panel to fit the grooves. Panel was a bit too much fun to cut to size, too.. But, finally got it to fit.. Spread some Elmer's around, had to use the pipe clamps... Added a few screws to the back and the bottom..... Ok, that drawer that was cleaned and set aside? Because someone complained about seeing "exposed, naked" Dovetails. This will be done only on the dovetailed areas, top and bottom edges are left alone....would look too "busy". Same "Enlightened" blowhard also didn't like the use of plywood..........or my use of a Bandsaw ( horrors!) so....here tis I am waiting on glue to dry, again. Maybe later, I can clean up the second small drawer? BTW: Amber Shellac? Or, that smelly BLO? Stay tuned Grandpadave52, HARO50, lew and 2 others

steven newman
So did I....but, there are some out there....... May get some clamps removed today...IF I get bored. Have a stack of Walnut strips to get ready for glue-ups....maybe try that? have to wait until the next pay period, before I get a can of Amber Shellac...it might make the walnut stand out a bit better? Along with all that Curly Maple Grain...? Grandpadave52 and lew

Popular Post steven newman
Ok...bored with the "Eclipse" show....Thunderstorm was in the way. Removed a few clamps, and reclamps another glue up... Drawer #4 has it's dovetail "covers" on....and then knobs. Errands to run.....came back and worked on cleaning up Drawer#2 Which left Drawer #3 to do,,, , Used this to saw out the waste...came from both directions.....chisels to clean up. And a rasp. and a slick...Got the walnut covers glued on...tacked them in place with a few brads...and stash the drawer of of the way... Which left Drawer #5 to do.....first I NEED that plank brought down to the shop...Cut two pieces off... Had the cordless saw down there..it had been FIRED....back to old school.. 1953 Disston D-8, 8ppi. Crosscut saw. Fully readable etch....I cut two 24-1/4" pieces, wasn't happy with the first one..needed a back anyway....Drawer front? And, there was another 4' left..but... This had "TROUBLE" written all over it....knots and splits.....not worth the hassle as a drawer front... Camera has having "issues" battery was low....decided my own battery was low, too...and went back upstairs....picking dried glue off of my fingers Tomorrow, I might get something done....we'll see..stay tuned p_toad, lew, Chips N Dust and 3 others

Popular Post steven newman
Ok, tried out today's "Follies".....drawer sides I thought would work? 4/4" thick, at least! Had to cut new sides... I do rotate the saws, giving each a turn. Today it was this saw from Atkins. 7ppi, crosscut. Seemed to cut decently enough...more of an operator error thingy.. Jointed the edges of the new sides, after the bandsaw ripped them to width... Junior jack. Got to checking the ends...grrrrr, ve haft vays... Each was just a 1/16" out of square.....not anymore. Larger plane to joint the edges of the drawer's front... Stanley No. 6c is called a "Small Jointer" , at least according to Stanley...( Really?) Front had one end a tad too wide.....not anymore. Time to get set up? yeah, welcome to my world. Drawer front is in the vise. laid out the pins, and did a bit of saw work.. Helps when I rub a candle on the saw's plate... once this end was cut ( but not chopped, yet) I laid out the pins to match at the other end.. I'd set that square from the edge to the first saw kerf, and then make a mark down on this end. Kept going until I had them all marked out. Make a knife-wall, using a bigger square ( that didn't move) Then got out the Usual Suspects.. See anything you know? I chop down half way, then flip the board over, and finish the chops..then turn the board end for end, and repeat.. Next, I stood this up on a drawer side, making sure I had things aligned the correct way..top-top, in-in, so forth....A SHARP pencil to mark out the pin's locations, then that square and knife thing. Then, over to the bandsaw, again I try to cut on the waste sides of the lines...and a little extra cut or two...the less I have to chop in there, the better.... Just like the pins, I chop 1/2 way in from each face. Don't need any blowouts. Dry fit, first corner? Needs a bit of tuning.....I didn't drive it all the way in, either. Dry fitted the second corner.. Dry fit 1 on top, dry fit 2 holding things up. Nothing else is holding this up there, but how tight the dovetails fit. Late lunch....stopped at 3:30.....next time down there, a 92 yr old plane will see some work.. have grooves for the drawer bottom to fit into. Then, since this IS the last drawer ( yeah!) I can change the plane over, and do the dados for the back.... Waiting on Supper, now, after that? We'll see....stay tuned....almost done. Popular Post steven newman
Couldn't just leave the stuff sit....was bored anyway..soooo.. Rigged up a jig to hold the front and the sides... Grooved the front.. Time to get out The Box... All kinds of goodies in there....Needed that wide #18-1/2 cutter. Traded out the #12 for it..... Screwdriver points to a spur I had to rotate down ( PITA) had to do both sides' spurs. This is now a dado plane, instead of a plough plane...Moved to jig around, need to hold the sides still long enough to cut a dado.. Added a screw down at the tails. I can tighten the vise as needed. Now, to get this far, a couple things need to happen. I drag the 45 backwards a few times, to let the spurs work....meh...follow that up with the backsaw to cut the exit a bit deeper, to prevent blowouts. had the cutter a hair deep reset nd finish the cuts.. When I am sliding on the depth stops. Dry fit? well, I need to resaw the back, first.. Or is it a rip cut? Now a dry fit.. So I could size up the bottom panel..... Too wide for the bandsaw...battery was almost dead on the saw.....finally just scored the last bit, and snapped it off. Then trimmed it to final size, beveled the edges.......and then grab a few clamps... Clamped one spot hard enough to see glue squirt back out! That dado plane makes a mess on my clean floor... Between that fan, and a couple cold Gatorades....Might have just enough clamps? Errands in the morning, then maybe remove that forest of clamps? Have the Walnut strips to apply, and the last two knobs to install.....then a day or three of sanding? Maybe by the weekend, I can get a start on the shellac? Stay tuned....
