August 15, 20178 yr Author Popular Post Maybe I should call this Drawer Wars? Episode 2? Shop NOW has an air compressor thingy.. Not much, put can clean up a few things.... Planks were moved to the shop...one at a time.....was a bit bummed out..they are only 8 footers.. Cleared the bench off, and got ready to crosscut a few pieces.. Tried this D-8.....get-up-n-go...said no. Got out the VINTAGE Sears circular saw instead ( I did do one cut with the saw, though ) But, when I need 10 pieces cut...corded saw was faster. Marked each for width..according to the drawer fronts. Fired up the bandsaw and ripped the waste off. Kind of a wavy cut,,,,we have ways to fix "wavy" Millers Falls No. 14. after a few minutes.. Went through the stack, and found two that were close to the same thickness... The drawer front was relieved of the two junky sides, and a start on their replacements was began.. Looks a little better? slipped this back into the case.. Will need fine tuned for fit, but that will happen after a glue up...The other drawer front was next.... Was asked to make slightly smaller pins and tails....PITA to do..but.. Started to make a few mistakes about then. Pins were going the wrong way. No biggie, really....inside of drawer front became outside of drawer front. Figured I'd stop right here, before any other items go wrong...slid this mess into it's home.. And called it a night. I even had to use the mitre saw! Had to square a few ends on the sides. Ever see "see-through shavings" from a saw? Doctor visit in the morning, to see how this thumb is, or isn't healing. After that, a few errands...maybe some shoptime by afternoon? Stay tuned
August 15, 20178 yr Author Thumb has been cleared for action, again....look out! Thumb is stiff from the splint.....needs to be worked on to loosen things up. X-rays were great. maybe when the Boss gets back home, I can get back to work?
August 15, 20178 yr Author Ok, plan is to try a coat of Amber Shellac on this thing when done. Bullseye Shellac is about it, around my area. Will I need to "cut" it down, or just brush it on as is? Been 30+ years since I have even used shellac.....kind of a rookie. The last time I used it, did not care for it, dried very rough... I may pick up a quart later, and see what happens....BLO takes too long to dry, before I can top coat it. Hoping the Amber stuff will make the grain "pop" a little better....
August 16, 20178 yr Author Popular Post Ok, time to get busy... Had to transfer markings to make sure the dovetails would match on each end of the drawer front.. Ever wonder why I have a 12" square? Laid out a few marks .. Biggest thing is to mark which IS the waste part. When doing these, I try to split the lines.. Chop out the waste, and get ready to mark the tails... Had to sharpen the pencil up...trying to hold things still, while tracing around all these pins.. came back with a square, and marked a stop line...then off to the bandsaw I went... The less I have to chisel out of these tiny tails, the better.. Works for me....While setting up for some grooves, a bit of plane work was done.. I managed to get all these corners cleaned up....set up was done.. Milled a few grooves for the drawer bottoms....had to build a jig for that.....Sides also get a dado, but, rather than reset the Stanley 45 ( spurs are a PITA) we had a better plan.... Mitre Box has depth stops I can set. Two saw cuts, then a chisel to pop the waste out. Had supplies for drawer bottoms and backs, handy.. Doing double duty as a shelf for the washer...shhhhh.. got a piece of poplar cut for the back,.. Dry fit. Had to use a handsaw to cut the plywood for the bottom..was too big for the bandsaw... Everything seemed to look decent enough...time to spread some Elmer's? I found clamp #6 hiding behind a few things....so, now I needed a place to set this, as Drawer #2 needed grooves and dado done.. Sitting on the "shelf" on the washer...shhhhhh. Dado and grooves are now done on the other drawer... Close up of the groove and dado junction? These are for the top two drawers.. Then it was Suppertime!.....might as well take a break, maybe get more done tomorrow.....hmmm, need to get that drawer OFF her washing machine.... Stay tuned...
August 16, 20178 yr Author Got a wee bit done, before lunch.. Had a bad corner I'll need to fix. Cleaned the rest of the drawer up, marked a center point in the front.. Drilled a pilot hole for one of these thingys.. Had to wax the threads on the screw....a dab of glue on it's backside.. Drawer 1 should be renamed Rogue One.....PITA the entire build.... Drawer 2 has been a bit better behaved.. Got the back fitted, a bottom cut out with a sabresaw....Elmer spread around, and six clamps....stashed this out of the way.. Yep, back on the washer, again...Bench was getting a bit crowded.. Had to clear away a few toys, so the parts for drawer 3 can arrive.. Then laid out some pins to be sawn and chopped.. Making sure I have the waste sides marked...correctly...this time. Lunch was Pizza Hut Delivery.....burp....may waddle back to the shop..later Stay tuned...
August 17, 20178 yr Author Popular Post A little more got done today.. Both ends were "pinned" ..lots of chisel work. Sides were "tailed" set the mess in the case, for now.. Because I removed the clamps on Drawer #2....cleaned it up, and added a knob.. Maybe tomorrow, I can complete the #3 drawer, and start on #4 That WAS a glass full of Ice and Mountain Dew...was. Chisels were a mixed assortment.. And a few others.....need to hide that mallet... Stay tuned...we be winning, I think..
August 17, 20178 yr Author Popular Post Today's Follies.....Plough a few grooves....set up for a few dados.. Use the Mitre Box.. Then make a jig to chisel out the waste I also sized a Poplar board to make a back. . And cut a plywood panel to size.....which, while spreading glue and getting clamps ready...both needed trimmed down a 1/4"...Finally got this mess all clamped up.. Sitting here, as I needed the bench space.....got both sides planed to match each other, and laid out the "Top, Bottom, and Inside" for each.. Not too bad, for sides of a drawer? When to size the front.....needed jointed on one edge.. That line? Is because this board is that much too wide...used a straight edge.. Now..IF I can just cut that straight.. Meh...we have ways.. Then started a layout for dovetail pins.. Have a feeling that THIS one will be FUN I did make a bit of a mess today.. Compost happens.. As for that Poplar board? I used thinner ones for the smaller drawer...but these bigger drawers need a bit more for the screws to hold onto...when I add screws through the sides into the back, and the bottom gets a few as well. Waiting on the glue to dry...again...Stay tuned
August 18, 20178 yr Coming right along even if you did have one hand tied behind your back for awhile.
August 18, 20178 yr Author Popular Post Got a little further done this morning.. This was after the backsaw was done..... And after the chisels were done with it...the other end was a breeze. Used these pins to layout the tails. Got the tails cut, and chopped out...fitted to the ends of the front they go to. Then set the three sides in their new home... I marked where to place the knobs on the drawer above #4.....before I moved it to the bench.. Cleaned up the dovetails, with a plane and a sander. A dab of glue into the cracks, a bit of saw dust into the glue, run the sander. Added a few screws.. Reinforced the sides to the back...the bevel on the corner is to help when I slide in the drawer.. A few screws to secure the bottom panel..I hate saggy bottoms... Added the knobs, and place Drawer #3 back in the case.. Then dug out a Poplar plank to make the back for Drawer #4......except,,,,I need to cut the back for the case, next. THEN I can see where to cut the bottom for the drawer... Means I need to haul that 4' x 4' panel to the shop....maybe after Supper? 3 hours in the shop....still moving at the Speed of Smell... Stay tuned..

August 20, 20178 yr Author Popular Post Last night wasn't a good night....Was just going to measure for the back panel.... After a lot of fussing and cussing....got the panel cut....out on the patio. About threw the thing down the steps to the shop....finally got it attached to the case.. Photos are from today....was to agitated last night to mess with a camera... Plugged the counter-bores....walnut plugs, and a dab of glue....hammered each in place But the drawers kept sliding out, into my way...grrrr, not in the mood. Took the drawers out, laid the case over, finished the plugs. then added the foot pads...THEN placed everything back to where they were... Which brings up this plank of Poplar... Was too large for the mitre box, rather, too LONG @ 7' long.....Laid the plank on the bench, was about to clamp it to the bench to saw......hmm,NEED a saw...walked over, grabbed the 1953 Disston D-8 crosscut saw out of the til, THEN clamped the plank to the bench...waxed the saw'plate, and made what I hope is the correct cut for length.. Then hauled the load of clothes in the dryer up the steps, and closed the shop for the night... Nothing much was done today.....a little cleaning of the floor. Installed a new light for the bench. Will try to clean these to new arrivals...sometime.. Strange hammer? I might find SOME use for the other "Thing" laying there....just a dollar bill for these two. Maybe after Lunch tomorrow, I may try to get to the shop....stay tuned...
August 20, 20178 yr Author Working out a few "details" in my sore head......there will be a surprise coming in regards to the drawer fronts.....Need to cut a few strips of walnut....and THAT is the ONLY hint you all will get..... Banged me head getting into the van today, so hard it made the van rock......now have a leaky bump on top of me head, and a BIG head ache.... Concussed? Or, maybe knocked some sense into that solid bone structure......? Anyway, when the next shot of all the drawers shows up...look very carefully...
