As long as the bench was cleaned off...might as well set up for some mortises..

59812450372fa_layouts.jpg.ea568d5883688f0d1a8c52bdf94cd393.jpg

Laid out where to dig a few holes at..

toys.jpg.38d88aa909cd74e5257b7fd39171aecc.jpg

Laid out a few tools..

extras.jpg.5e6552ed4ccb1a10ffb036d0fa6a242f.jpg

Might need these, as well..

598124dbbe707_clampedup.jpg.ee4f5c57f69f03b9a33ea416ce0c55e1.jpg

Need a decent clamp to hold things still long enough to chop a few holes...

5981251ea1d67_shopstool.jpg.ad4aff74148ae919f2fefd7cfcc8c6e5.jpg

Gotta have this.....best way to chop a mortise....sitting down.

First mortise..

5981256a6e7d4_dryfit1.jpg.f3b1ccfa3bff416e9a8ac33110c7f4d2.jpg

And a dry fit....the Haunched Tenon even fits..

598125b2bfea8_haunchedtenon.jpg.abcc3a73de3fd51f7636301acd654a1f.jpg

And this is what a haunched tenon look like...Next hole..598125f8657f6_nextmortise.jpg.c9232bbacef70874de3a1703629a45ea.jpg

And another dry fit..

59812633104c9_dryfit2.jpg.7b7cb234eb23191d4bec9d145e8179f5.jpg

And kept going until all five were done, on this stile..

598126a632385_stileno.2.jpg.d892811eaa2cafa6f21c66c787460228.jpg

More dry fits...there was a crack...in the stile....had to go back and glue it up.  Got about this far on the second stile....back was hurting, thumb was sore...just left the toys out..

Hmmm, must be seeing double...

Called it a night, always a chance tomorrow of getting something done.  Stay tuned...

Apparently, there are TWO wood mallets running around in the shop?

Might have over-did yesterday......that, or some truck has run over me...a few times...

Three mortises need done.   one glue-up need to get out of the clamps....MAYBE another  can be clamped up?

Maybe after Brunch?   Need to bring in the boards for the webframes, too.....

Need a Mountain Dew, so BOTH eyes can be awake....ummmmm

  • Author

Ok...1 x 2s have been moved down to the shop, a wee bit long to carry down there.

Got the LAST three mortises chopped, and dry fitted....Removed the clamps from side #1, and "staged" them close to the bench.....

Glue up went about as well as can be expected..........added an extra pipe clamp in the center.....creaks and groans...both me and the parts:o, but, no CRACK was heard:ph34r:

Set the mess aside, after adding a few "F" style clamps....

5981f5b4d3156_Bothsides.jpg.9d595a23c3a1765cf8e8b9a7424385f7.jpg

Able to stand up on it's own?   Well, there is a LARGE pair of Visegrips keeping the bottom pipe clamp from working loose

Looking nice?  Except...IF you look behind these two..

5981f6403f2f7_noroom.jpg.438cec579f866ae79ea0027ef4c1b47b.jpg

Need to get to the Mitre Box  ( wait..I do have a spare..) and need to get TO those 1 x 2s leaning up, back there...

Oh, well, I guess it could wait while the glue dries.   Need to figure how wide to make the case, so I know how wide the webframes will be.

That will be next on the "schedule"  ...stay tuned....

Hanging around for the next episode of "Dew It to It!"

You must get extra adrenaline in the shop. I do. Feel terrible till I get in the shop and then full tilt until I sit down in front of the TV and collapse.

Hmmm...Wood supply is getting a bit low....MIGHT have enough...barely..

3/4 x 4" x 7' Black Walnut.....will be trim parts.....should go well with the Curly Maple?

Spent a bit of time tonight...not working IN the shop, but..

plan.jpg.a103fc007716ef55815cffe8f6d1f633.jpg

We have plan.....have to hide this from Boris and Natasha....this one might work.   Web-frame plan.   Needed to lay out some measurements...

May be a drawer plan, later?   First, need to build the case, then do the drawers to fit...

Took a few trips to the shop, to get a few measurements......I tuckered out, think that will do for one day?

Stay tuned...I have to go and hide TWO mallets from Lew....

Ok...3 hours worth of shop time, then Lunch...after that?

Clamps were removed from the side #2.....matched up the sides....will need to joint a bit off one edge...later.  Right now, I need parts cut up..

598376f4b4e72_mitrebox.jpg.ef6a38e169c57bc7620cc2fd183bb326.jpg

My "spare" MitreBox...Needed a few 8' pine 1 x 2s cut down....not much room to the left of the saw...first cuts were @ 24"

59837770c8931_longparts.jpg.4cd89dd8f19310dbfab80e1519948ac0.jpg

Set these aside for a while( got yelled at, because I set them on the washing machine:o !) Long parts needed a helping hand

598377fc30127_stockholder.jpg.d43685e60be8db105789e5b43dd0ab41.jpg

Made a LOT of saw dust, today:rolleyes:  Set up the saw stop....and cut the 11-1/4" long parts..

59837865d6cd0_shortparts.jpg.cb521da351b3fec5f7423007b3a946fe.jpg

Reset and cut the kickers, as well.    Set up the re-saw jig on the bandsaw, and reset the mitre box...

598378c4037de_stopblock1.jpg.a8215e73683cc8586c4fe6e4ae30bcd5.jpg

The metal one that came with the mitre box was about an inch too short.  This sets the 1/2" length of the tenons..

598379241ca06_depthstop.jpg.cd67b8c85a00ac32e746903b37a72582.jpg

That bracket adjusts to set the depth of the cut...a bit fussy..but works.    I even used this set up for the wider board..

59837998c58d5_drawerrunner.jpg.30bf90f3529fda019c0cf4ae54e8d6c2.jpg

More on this one?   Well, after the bandsaw got done with things..

598379df51760_tallcut.jpg.2e73fc9ab5f9a7f63f682c51a551908a.jpg

And the waste got popped off...

tenons.jpg.848b7162bcfd5523f2c384342f8944c2.jpg

These were done.   Time to chop a few mortises...need a jig for that.   I put the mitre box away, and set things up..

59837a756c779_mortisejig.jpg.73b0c997cac9203fdc6da07bb1f5931f.jpg

Jig get attached to the benchtop.  Mallet and chisel and a backsaw.   Finger clamp keeps the parts in the jig, and is quick to change parts with.

Backsaw cuts at an angle, Chisel the chisel the far end down to the bottom of the mortise, then pops the waste out...a dry fit?

59837b3f3f3f2_dryfit.jpg.fa3e78291e8581946ea34d299c8a662e.jpg

Got both ends done...but, this frame gets a middle piece...

59837b89d7b8e_laidout.jpg.7c22474e803b32a56c98b761975ed73f.jpg

It has a double tenon...and we have a knot..figures.   well, we have ways..

59837bcd44413_whatknot.jpg.00dd896a63b56957d3f0e35c06a379c8.jpg

Hmm, what knot?   I chopped my way back to the knot, then it popped out better.   Dry fit?

59837d3fef1bf_dryfit2.jpg.ee41fcbd635c58cac23a7fed45e60e11.jpg

Will just have to do...Spread some glue around, added a few clamps...the reason for the wide board?

59837da3670c1_gluedup1.jpg.66f532c2690d8e8efe5e623df8d531c4.jpg

Is two drawers go here,  need a runner under them in the middle, and a guide to keep them going in straight...

kicker.jpg.480c84feea133f966ef6a277679d88e2.jpg

I also added a kicker for the drawer below, so the drawer won't tip down when you pull it out...

notched.jpg.52ff08dc8f5ad767b617cb486ef8ac2c.jpg

There is a frame above the double drawers.   Needed notched to fit in here..

59837ea936df3_topcorner.jpg.56b469ec431419da1497c247ba4a0bbe.jpg

Since the top rail is a bit thinner.   This frame will also get a kicker for each drawer.....right now it is Lunch Time!    3 hours in the shop, so far...

Stay  tuned,,,,four more frames to go..:o

Ok,last night..went to check on the fan...whether I remembered to turn it off, or not..

Did a double check of a mortise I had laid out, but not chopped.....it was on the wrong side....compost happens:rolleyes:

So, this afternoon, I corrected that and cut a new mortise..

59851e4eeb45f_correctmortise.jpg.b8521037c1f517cb1ea2d6658a9bbc3b.jpg

Then went and finished that  frame...

59851e9547652_topframe.jpg.c49c1bfb4473e813760a8f67f074d200.jpg

Had the feeling this was going to fight the entire way.   Large holes?   So I can attach the frames to the sides of the case....much easier to forstner bit and pilot drill when stuff isn't in the way..DAMHIKT....Another "issue" was screws to hold the kickers in place....Countersink wasn't  working right, some of the screws were way too long.

59851f71aeec5_doublekickers.jpg.1cdd30ff7b22a4301256e2373068cbc2.jpg

The screws that were too long?  took them back out and ground off the excess. Two kickers for the two drawers.   This one is the top frame...only the top of case is above it.   Clamped and glued up, and set aside..

Saw  work...

backsaw.jpg.c9ee2f7015e509c360acfbcc81a02f17.jpg

This is the angle used, to make the cut..

598520b266bb7_sawcut.jpg.12cb49d507b08c77140d0ea42800c90a.jpg

To cut the sides of the mortise.  Then a bit of work with the chisel..

chopping.jpg.89750b5d69b457bcbb238c9534e2f362.jpg

And dig a hole at the far end.   Lay the chisel flat, as to pare, and pop the waste right out.   Clean things up and do a dry fit, or three,,

598521a12dd32_dryfit.jpg.244f58e9a8f14e690d4a21bdb150bd77.jpg

And another short rail is fitted.    About these short rails....all were cut from a 1 x2 x8' board.....not the best looking ones, either..

5985221197069_squarethumb.jpg.3f0e29bf69e94e2ed99ad335c0d7d5e8.jpg

And some were a hair wider than others...we have ways..(yep, that is my sore thumb..)

5985226786c4a_jackplane.jpg.db38e8d2b2c6e141b04bff5cba35f88e.jpg

Ok, got them all squared up ( one even had a twist to it) and close to the same size....I chucked the Forstner bit into the drill press ( cordless didn't spin fast enough) and made a few holes..

5985230da8164_pilotholes.jpg.ce1fa5c369161229249211e1fc9db44c.jpg

Counter-bores, then a drill bit to make the pilot holes.  Rather do these now, than try it went things are all glued up.   All I needed was two holes per rails.   Allowed a space for the drill to get in and drive some screws...

598523ca1fcf2_singlekickerframe.jpg.d37d0b81e02f9758a5cccca868b95bed.jpg

I have had to trim just under an 1/8" off the ends of these kickers....must have cut on the wrong side of the lines...Oh well.

I was going to try and get all the frames done, today.....ran out of those type of clamps.....pipe clamps would have been just too much.

Called it a day, and let the glue dry....tomorrow, I can get the last two frames done....maybe.

Stay tuned to this Bat Channel.....

Whew! I can't imagine how much you'd get done if your thumb was banged up and you weren't documenting the build along the way!:P I thought I accomplished a lot today, but I think you still out did me...

I gotta start drinking more Mountain Dew!

Did you ever lose track of time in the shop?    Next thing I knew, it was suppertime?

Just  the Highlights from today's  shoptime follies..

Ok...had to shut down and restart the computer, and do a full scan....GrandBRAT been on it again...Grrrr:angry:

As for that crooked joint?  We have ways.

.fixed.jpg.1418e11c0319810be066e289a1d8760a.jpg

Just until the glue dries.    I got the last of the web-frames done today...:)

598664f63f50d_lastone.jpg.f0e1b9667bfd434be929e7ec34e0e08c.jpg

Stacked the two sides together,....hmmm

598666b81e12a_notamatch.jpg.50ca418480e8c50a4fc88c89ca0129d8.jpg

Hmm, bandsaw to hog most of that extra off....clamp the two sides together again.   Set the mess up in the vise at the bench. Planes to remove the saw marks..

5986672fd36ab_matchedsides.jpg.db067f16343201186bbadec65572ab6e.jpg

Set one side  off out of the way....and make a rebate for the plywood back to sit in..

rebate.jpg.32f3a78514af204510baf2684c243a5e.jpg

Had to make this one a stopped rebate, used a mallet and chisel to get what the Stanley 45 could not.   Got both rebates done, decided to start adding web-frames.   Brought a Walnut plank down to the shop, to get the "set-back" needed for the front of the frames, then glue and screws..

598668490d562_3installs.jpg.508652222a4d28ecbc1454a51a4f2604.jpg

Squares to make sure things go in square to the sides..

5986689ad40e0_squaredup.jpg.617a72d9ed90d8e08fa7da5a6dece6d1.jpg

When I flipped this over onto the other side...not everything lined up.....clamps to pull tings back, cussing, a shim for the top frame..cussing....squares everywhere...cussing...finally got all the frames to where they needed to be....and then set this mess down on it's own four feet..

59866952b388f_Pipeclamps.jpg.cd634e0697fcd3371464af83f334c1ad.jpg

Had to glue and screw a shim at one end of the top frame ( compost happens:rolleyes:)

Decided to find out how long a piece of walnut to cut....to make trim pieces...Laid out two cut lines, and...how to cut this thing?

598669fecc38b_D-8saw.jpg.e9ae15a31259f2ae9a25ea4ea39cdc0a.jpg

The D-8 crosscut saw I had sent out to be sharpened a while back.  ( couldn't get to the circular saw..)

59866a5cd22c0_2outof3.jpg.c6fdc706c2ea85d7f4d7922bf0380dec.jpg

Had to joint a straight edge on one edge of the three boards...yes, I got three planks from two cuts..

jointed.jpg.ebc7125eb98ad3469850a95da6ac75ea.jpg

Forgot how bad Walnut smells when cut...anyway, needed the straight edge because I needed to resaw these down a bit

resaws.jpg.b9c5362c67f5dfde0dfb77a26df13a0b.jpg

Will need to joint those edges, cut a dovetail on each end, once I figure out how long to make these  face frame parts.

I think these will wait for another day......almost 5 straight hours in the shop, today.....I think. Stopped for suppertime....and closed up the shop.

Maybe I can get a little bit done, tomorrow?   Stay tuned to this Batty Channel:ph34r:

Usually there are so many interruptions I can barely get a train of thought started. The only time I refuse to be bothered is when doing a glue-up. During that time even the "Rapture" can wait.

Looking great so far and really taking shape. You've made some amazing things since I've been on-board here, but I think you're about to outdo yourself on this one...

And you sure ain't been all thumbs on it either!

Trying to take my mind off a few things...lost a good friend last week....:(

Decided to at least try the shop....

5988fc9393834_thedovetailgang.jpg.0717139df936d2e01fdc04c6d57c4d99.jpg

Cut a few of these.  Ganged them up, and got out a jointer..

jointer.jpg.ca626b305eacb15a30df91a79792b5fe.jpg

Already having "issues"...Grrrr.  Got these planed  and set aside....decided to try to be fancy..

5988fd45685ee_wastedspace.jpg.855574ff1d51f07d1f2d04cf114b7a35.jpg

For the top rail....should have not even bothered....Stile's pins broke right off....

5988fdb4ab334_upintheair.jpg.97334e18ac8ccc873f79605520853ecb.jpg

This thing is getting heavy.   But, this is how I can chop out sockets for the dovetails...in theory...

chopped.jpg.2545be296156cb626f1fdc5fb8476d3b.jpg

Over on the left, you can see what happened to the fancy part....Just need to cut a new rail.  The ex-fancy one is now the bottom rail....will get some curves cut along it's bottom edge.  Glue and screws for it.   Plugs to cover the screws..later.   Rest of these rails will get a couple screws and plugs, after the glued dovetails are in place..got to this point..

5988fefd5adbb_quittingtime.jpg.b6f406b2feaf928fea68e5bff7806058.jpg

Marked out for that one, decided to stop while I was behind....That'll teach me to work on a Monday...

Stay tuned, there is always tomorrow:rolleyes:
