Click on the image for the link Everything Else- @Gerald asked for some images of the John Beaver wave bowls I am preparing for a demo I am doing in August. This will be a club demo for the local Cumberland Valley Woodturners. These are just some images of the bowls in various stages of development that I will use to show how they are made. The actual production of a bowl, from start to finish takes several days to allow for glue drying, coloring, sanding and finishing. The bowls are roughed out but left a bit thick so that there will be enough "meat" for gluing later in the process Special supports are made to custom fit inside the bowl to provide a way of holding it together while turning operations are done later. The supports are hot melt glued in place. John Beaver uses MDF but I didn't have any. The supports are drilled to accept dowels to maintain alignment. One of the supports is labeled to keep things aligned. The blank is moved to the bandsaw and a wave is cut in two steps. Dowels are inserted and a pressure block added to the tail stock to make sure everything stays in place and aligned. At his point, the bowl could be made with a wave that stands proud of the surface or recessed below the surface. Recessed wave waiting for the squeeze out to gel. The inside of the bowl will have the supports removed and then turned to the final thickness. The extra "meat" in the wall thickness makes sure there is enough surface for a good glue bond when turning the inside to a respectable wall thickness. Safe turning

One thing that should be noted is that all Easy Wood products are made right here in the good ol' U. S. of A. However, some of the best prices can be found by cruising their social media pages for special sales from woodworking retailers i.e. Woodcraft etc. For the month of June, a few - If you are thinking about attending the St. Paul, MN symposium, Easy Wood Tools will be well represented- And another shameless self promotion- @Jordan Martindale New Turning Items- Everything Else- From Ron Brown's Newsletter: Good Enough Perfection is often unattainable, and just as frequently, unnecessary. I hear from turners all the time who proudly sand salad bowls to 4,000 grit. Anything above 320 grit is just a waste of time and effort for most wood projects. However, acrylic and resin projects may well benefit from using abrasives up to 12,000 grit. The caution here is not to get bogged down in the last 2 percent trying to make something perfect when 98 percent of the work is very close to perfection and Good Enough. When I used to build custom furniture from cherry, walnut, oak, and hardwood plywood, I quickly discovered that stopping at 220 grit produced excellent results. Especially when covered by sanding sealer and pre-catalyzed lacquer as finishes. It’s true, sometimes less is more. The secret was to be careful with each finer sanding grit, ensuring that all scratches from the coarser grit were entirely removed. That is where patience really pays off, as I deliberately go over the entire surface, then examine my work with a raking light source before moving up to the next finer grit. Most folks don’t realize that excessive sanding with fine-grit paper creates heat that releases and then hardens the lignin in wood, often resulting in a splotchy finish. The finishing material will not be able to penetrate the surface evenly, and it looks awful. If you’ve ever blown up a bowl, it usually comes from making one last cut to get the finish just right and the walls as thin as possible. You forgot that wood moves and bowls can go out of round as you turn, even if they’ve been drying for months. As wood is removed, the moisture content can change, causing the thin walls to warp, or harmonic vibration to set in. That final cut produces an unexpected catch and bang! Fresh bowl pieces are lying around the shop once again. The problem with patience is that it takes so long. My projects rarely turn out exactly like I see them in my mind. My hope is to bring them close to my idea of perfection and bring them to the “Good Enough” stage of completion. I know some of you think I’m smarter than I actually am. What you see are the results of persistence, patience, and starting over many times before I was able to show you a finished version. You will never see the eight failures that came before. Remember how WD-40 got its name. I would rather have you do something slowly and well than do it quickly and poorly, sometimes referred to as Half-Fast. Many years ago, I got tired of hearing myself say “Oops! I didn’t see that before, and now it’s too late to fix it.” I am deliberate in my inspections before proceeding to the next step. It is always easier to fix it then, rather than several steps later. Safe turning

Lots of stuff this week! Our Patriot Turners- @calabrese55 posted a concept for modifying a set of calipers- See his post for what he proposes and additional information. @Gerald posted information concerning Teknatool USA Bankruptcy filings. Lots of folks use their products. Guess we will have to wait to see how this shakes out. @Fred W. Hargis Jr added a comment to the end of last weeks "Wednesday". Fred said that even though he has watched a lot of turning videos, he is still having trouble with tool presentation to the work. I did some searches on the topic and found several videos that might help him, and others having the same difficulties. For bowl gouges, this one has really great closeups- These are from noted turners, however, they are from live demonstrations. There are lots of opinions about whether the tenon or mortice is the best option when holding work on the lathe. Stuart Batty explains pros and cons in these 2 videos- Expand Your Horizons- It is just after the first of the month and the "4 Ways" collaboration continues. Threads are this month's challenge. If your Mrs. does the same, she might appreciate this for March 17- New Turning Items- Many of our turners use casting resins for different applications. This information came in an email from Alumilite The email linked 3 turners who pretty much specialize in each one of the 3 types of resin. Our Patriot Turners- @Masonsailor has been cranking out a wide variety of Christmas presents. He showed us some of what he had started for last week's "Wednesday's...". Paul has added several more images of his turnings as a continuation to that post- Have a look at the other beautiful turnings Paul has completed! @forty_caliber has a bunch of turning blanks all sealed up and awaiting their turn on the lathe! Forty also showed us the results of a bowl he started a little while back. The color is fantastic! Check out where it all started- He also posted a quick update on a Pecan bowl he is roughing out. Really nice shape- @RustyFN posted his really neat bottle stopper turnings! There's gonna be some very happy folks at Christmas! Rusty got lots of great comments and answered some questions in this post- Rusty's Mrs. really keeps him busy cranking out presents (I know the feeling) and this one is a winner- Rusty explains more in his post- @PostalTom completed the chess set for his grandson. This will surely become a family heirloom. I've been assembling a rig to machine chase threads in wood on my engine lathe. But I gotta say after watching this I wonder if I should stop They babble insanely in some incomprehensible alien language (I guess their mommies didn't teach them english) But you don't really need any words Oh the oil they use I suspect is Linseed oil

Hard to believe that on Friday we will have put 2020 behind us. Let's hope 2021 will see the end of the pandemic! Our Patriot Turners- @PostalTom finished up his Christmas stocking tree. It turned out fantastic and can be seen in his update to a previous post- @RustyFN has a laser and he has combined it with his CNC machine to design some emblems to finish off his turned bowls. Check out his post to read more about what he is doing and the comments from our members. @HandyDan gave us a Christmas eve peek at some of the ornaments and displays he made- He received lots of positive comments in his post and he gave us a source for some of the embellishments. @AndrewB is looking for some ideas on reverse chucking a bowl. Our members came through with flying colors! They offered techniques, sources and photos to help Andrew figure out the best way- What’s Coming Up- Cindy Drozda Has a live online demonstration/class coming up in January- Click on the above image for the link to her site and more information. For The Newbies- It's a little late for this year but a great time to get a jump on next year's ornaments and gifts! Here's Carl Jacobson creating a Christmas Gnome! If that's not your cup of tea, how about Mike Peace turning a nativity scene. A two video set turning all of the pieces- Part 2 is linked from this video. Expand Your Horizons- We all have turned small lidded boxes. Most of them have had slip fit type lids. Here, Sam Angelo demonstrates how to add threads to the box and lid. This is a two part video set. Part 2 is linked from Sam's YouTube channel. Tim Yoder always brings something new to the plate. In this video he demonstrates how to turn a beautiful Christmas ornament using a cardboard mailing tube. Several months ago we were discussing ways to liquid proof turned vessels. The use of epoxy seemed to to be the preferred material but the trouble was in how to apply it evenly. Zac Higgins shows what he did with a rotisserie motor. Everything Else- Last week's YouTube woodturning videos from Rick Turns- I am always mesmerized by the work of Frank Howarth. His video style, the projects and the detail are top notch. This one is no exception- I finally finished up the lathe dust collection modifications. The PVC elbow sat a little high. The replacement is made of wood and turned pretty thin. Hope it is strong enough- It's hard to get the light just right to see the dust movement but it does work a lot better than the old hose mount. This was softwood and 80 grit but you get the idea- Safe turning and stay well

Just looking out of the window at the beautiful sunset. Days are getting shorter and the leaves are beginning to show signs of fading. Click on the above image for a link to more information and registration For The Newbies- If you are like me, there were no turning clubs in my area when I began turning. The Internet, for me, was available on a 300 baud modem on a shared telephone line. Videos were out of the question. Well now, at least, fast Internet is available and groups are out there to help the new turner. A well known personality in the turning world, Capt. Eddie Castelin, is creating a website to bring turners of all levels together. The site is currently under development but check out what Capt. Eddie has to say in this video- Here's the website link- http://www.worldwidewoodturners.com/ Expand Your Horizons- Acrylic and acrylic hybrid turnings are becoming all the rage lately. Woodcraft has started stocking Alumilite products including resins and colors. It can be fun to create your own turning blanks or use the casting resins as "fillers". But beware, to have castings free of voids and bubbles can get expensive. Pressure pots, compressors, vacuum chambers and pumps are some of the additional equipment necessary. If you decide to try this, Easy Wood Tools negative rake cutters are the best way to get the smoothest finish @Jim from Easy Wood Tools Recently, Carl Jacobson turned this little jem from an acrylic/carbon fiber blank- New Turning Items- The folks at Woodturners Wonders have redesigned their website. It's easier to navigate. This isn't really a new turning item but rather a novel idea for using a "regular" wood working device. Rick Turns shows us how he uses a woodshop moisture meter to check if his bowl blanks have dried. Watch for his little "drying kiln" in the video- Everything Else- I forgot to put this in last weeks Wednesday's. Had the opportunity to sub in a vocational area I usually don't get to see. Worked in the HVAC classroom. Really nice bunch of kids. Well mannered and respectful. Says a lot about their regular instructor- who is a graduate from that same shop a few years back. Our Patriot Turners- Our own @Steve Krumanaker is turning into quite the Cecil B Demille. Steve posted two great videos this past week. One showing Bedan work and the other showing us how to used the Bedan in making a "honey dipper". Awesome work Steve and Thanks!! @Gerald gave us some insight on finding the center of a turning and why the center might not be the center! The examples we listed all used special tools and techniques to accomplish the task. Capt. Eddie posted a video showing another way to have a threaded project. As always, Capt.
