    Sibling Bowls

So my sister saw the bowl and asked me to make her and my other sister a bowl. I was not happy with the result of using the miter gauge to make the segments so I did some research and discovered wedge sleds and studied them for a few days and didn't really like exactly what I found so I designed something a bit different. There's a lot of videos on how to make them but they seemed inaccurate at best. I did some CAD work and came up with this CAD design for a wedge sled. Cutting from the bottom the holes and slot. I added a hand hold and something to secure the right edge. First test cut with some scrap wood, I'm a happy camper... I wanted to be in control of the segment as it's cut off and not let it have a burr. It's just MDF nothing fancy but super accurate as far as I can tell. This is a 10 segment black walnut ring I cut on the wedge sled. I might be tricked into making a few wedge sleds for cost it there is any interest in them. I'd just make the base and the fences on my CNC mill you would need to make the hand hold and supply the hardware and make the miter slot and insert. I have a spreadsheet to calculate the length and width of the segments as soon as I put that on my web site I'll add a link here. This is the calculations for the wedges. Needless to say I was very happy with the results. Now on to the bowls... what a mess under the router table but that's been cleaned up by now. Now I couldn't send my sisters a one of a kind bowl without engraving something from their brother on the bottom of the bowl so I had to come up with a way to hold the bowls while making the bottom perfectly flat and engraving the message. V-Carve works best with a level surface and I'm not good enough on the lathe to do that so I did it on the mill. The engraving jig clamps. I put a center mark in the bottom of the bowl while it was on the screw chuck during Op #1. I used that center to fix the X0 location of the bowl on the mill. The jig is 8" deep so Y-4 is the center of the bowl for engraving. Making the bottom flat This one is for my wife! For my sisters JT

So I finally made a crosscut sled

For years I've read that a crosscut sled is a necessity in the shop, yet I never felt inclined to make one. (let me mention I have a panel sled to square up panels.)But while putzing with tissue box covers I wasn't happy handling such small pieces on the saw. Then I came across a smaller sled in a magazine (Woodcraft, maybe) that I though would be useful for smaller pieces. This is my version. Let me mention again, I'm very much function over form, so I don't dress such things up to look nice. I just want them to perform as they should. Anyway, what's different about this sled from others I've seen is that it's a single runner sled. That allows you to move from one miter slot to the other. The idea is that (on my saw) when it's in the left slot, you cut 90º more or less in the middle of the sled. When it's in the right slot, you can tilt the blade to 45º and cut miters for mitered corner boxes. Because you only have one runner I bought a metal one that adjusts for tightness and not worry about wear on it. Anyway, here's what I came up with: The pics show it in the left slot and the right slot. So far this looks handy for smaller pieces, it's only 14" between the fences and I kinda wished I had made it a little smaller. But it's 25" wide and that seems to be about right.
  6. Artie here are the pictures of the SS’s. The first it the sliding table. Second is the lathe and belt sander, third the band saw and sanding disc, fourth is horizontal boring and lathe chisel sharpening jig. Fifth is the drill press
  7. I'm making a crosscut sled for my table saw. I'm using 3/4" BB plywood. I've seen lots of plans and a few have used zero clearance inserts for the sled and/or the fence. Do you find this to be a worthwhile feature? I would route recesses in the sled and fence and use 1/4" hardboard for the inserts.

    table saw sled sizing

Good morning guys, I'm working on making some larger panel cuts and am wondering what size you make your TS sleds? I have a very nice small one but the width just doesn't allow me to cut things like cabinet sides. Would love to see some pics to gleem some ideas from. As a side note I need to cut some plywood with some oval cut outs, I don't have the luxury of a cnc what would be the best way to reduce tearout in these cuts?
