I know what you mean about using all of the wood. Cherry can have such beautiful grain and colors. I had a walnut log that had the heart wood almost centered but the sap wood was grey. Made an end grain bowl that turned out looking more like a clay pot.

According to John Jordan to keep the white you have to turn walnut when it hits the ground. I have never been that lucky.

I cut this one down in February. I'm going to leave it like it is for the time being, cutting off pieces as I get inspired. It's off the ground and should be fine for a while. I'll update you on how white or dark the sapwood is as I progress.

 

By the way, open invitation: If anyone wants to make a trip to the Nashville area, I'll give you as much wood as you can carry.

That looks like it is a nice one . It is amazing that a walnut log will keep for several years intact laying on the ground. 

Turned a piece of Cedar. Tried to keep some of the live edge and bark. I wasn't very successful though. I love turning Cedar. Since my shop is connected to my house it makes the entire house smell so good.

Nice one! Lovely color, too!

After a bit over two weeks it is done. Doing patches and sanding was the worst part of it all. Finish is semi gloss lacquer. Bowl is magnolia. Collar may be a rosewood. Finial may be zircote .

Patches are Spalted pecan. 
 

 

 

It was a long road but worth it to say I did it.

AAW forum has a swap twice a year. This was finished and mailed yesterday. Swamp Maple with a Cherry burl inset. Finish is lacquer. 

 

Nice Gerald.  Great form and nice wood.

A small elm chalice (I guess). Two, actually. Yorkshire grit followed by Myland's. I started to duplicate it (something I have no experience with) but it didn't quite work out.

 

Both are gorgeous! Duplicating ain't easy.

Incense burner for my wife. Elm finished with Ack's polishing compound and Ack's wax. The last picture is under a blacklight.
