I took a walk around the woodpile yesterday. I noticed that some of my maple was spalting. Small tree, so nothing big. I made this hollow form. I found out I really don't like hollowing. I'll invest in a good hollowing tool one of these days. I don't like the shape on this one, but this is how we learn.

Also, I included a pic of a cedar bowl I sanded through. Very old wood with a lot of weak spots.

They are both beautiful pieces. I'm on the fence about hollowing, but, I don't have any "deep hollowing" equipment.

Nice pieces but need to eliminate that sharp conversion on the side. Hollowing can be nerve racking unless you have the right tools and then it can become routine.

The spalting with finish is spectacular. Piece 'ain't too shabby either. Like the cedar bowl too.

I thought I wanted that sharp conversion, but once it was done I didn't get what I envisioned.

I've found in my turnings that they hardly ever end up exactly like I originally intended. I usually start with a loose concept of what I want and just let whatever happens happen. I let the wood tell me what it wants to be as I just chip away the excess. I'm not very good with hollowing either. I guess I just need more practice.

Good advice and an approach that I subscribe to myself.

I cut down this dead sassafras last week. It had two crotches so I'll make four bowls from those. This is actually bowl #2.

Never knew Sassafras had such beautiful grain.

Looks like a piece from a crotch.  Very good looking bowl.

Some mighty fine looking work @kreisdorph.The colors and grain patterns are spectacular.

It doesn't, usually. Most of the feathering from the crotch is decayed. I used a bunch of shellac on it to firm it up.

Yep. #1 and #2 were taking from the same crotch. #3 is a crotch higher up (and more punky).

Walnut and maple bowl. The prep work took longer than the turning. First turning in my new shop. I'll post some pictures in a new topic soon.

Sweet bowl. Looking forward to seeing the new shop tour. Hold me a ticket.

That's a sturdy bowl.  Love the colors.

Two of my favorite woods! Really like the design created by the segmented glue-up.
