April 15, 20242 yr Popular Post I took a walk around the woodpile yesterday. I noticed that some of my maple was spalting. Small tree, so nothing big. I made this hollow form. I found out I really don't like hollowing. I'll invest in a good hollowing tool one of these days. I don't like the shape on this one, but this is how we learn. Also, I included a pic of a cedar bowl I sanded through. Very old wood with a lot of weak spots.

I'm on the fence about hollowing, but, I don't have any "deep hollowing" equipment.
April 15, 20242 yr Author Popular Post Nice pieces but need to eliminate that sharp conversion on the side. Hollowing can be nerve racking unless you have the right tools and then it can become routine.

I've found in my turnings that they hardly ever end up exactly like I originally intended. I usually start with a loose concept of what I want and just let whatever happens happen. I let the wood tell me what it wants to be as I just chip away the excess. I'm not very good with hollowing either. I guess I just need more practice.

April 29, 20242 yr Popular Post I cut down this dead sassafras last week. It had two crotches so I'll make four bowls from those. This is actually bowl #2.
April 29, 20242 yr Popular Post @kreisdorph That is some awesome looking wood! Love the grain color contrasts.
April 29, 20242 yr Some mighty fine looking work @kreisdorph.The colors and grain patterns are spectacular.

April 29, 20242 yr Popular Post Walnut and maple bowl. The prep work took longer than the turning. First turning in my new shop. I'll post some pictures in a new topic soon.
