  • This is a 16” native cherry bowl. Should have taken more, better pictures. It is cery thin- for me. A little more than 1/8” exept for the thickened areas of the rim, which the hand falls to nicely.

This is hardly something to show, but it's proof I've been screwing around on the lathe. These 2 bowls are practice pieces I started last week. I was working the larger bowl some time back when a chunk broke out of the bottom. I glued it back in and then forgot about it. After a recent rearrangement of the shop to put my lathe in a different spot I decided to try it again. It's been a nightmare, the wood is extremely dry and I was using carbide tools on it (remember, this was a learning experience). The dust was so bad I had to start wearing a respirator, and under the face shield and glasses the glasses fogged up...so I had to quit wearing them. Then another 2" chunk broke off on the rim. I could only find about 1/2 of it so i couldn't glue it back together...instead I cut about 1" off the top edge of the bowl and went back to turning. I had  at last 3 catches that caused the bowl to fly off the chuck, no doubt this was my fault but this piece has some squirrelly grain.

A few points you probably know .

1.Be careful when working with blanks in glue up...CA will not make it , use wood glue

2.Dust protection is a must of some type.

3.When you see cracks you are at risk and at the very least slow the lathe, but probably stop and chunk the piece. "Life is too short to turn crappy wood"

I think you did all you could. Try turning some green wood to learn how and then advance to dry blanks.

Neat designs. Spiral paint will look cool when spinning.

Not being a turner either, but it looks like you have some measure of success here Fred.  ;)

All good advice; I'll have to find some green wood since I don't have any. I am having a few more trees cut down and I may try to get something out of them.

I seldom turn green wood.  I like to turn to finish and wet wood doesn't afford that although it is easier to turn wet.  I do stay away from wood with too many cracks in it.  Too dangerous.

Saw the Record power demo and it was a new idea to me. A bowl with spout and handle. IMG_8395.jpeg.b8a56f41665e9a084789d637da7829d3.jpeg

That is really cool Gerald. Looks like you passed that skill test with flying colors. Gotta have more pictures to follow this one to completion.

Wow Gerald.  That's just too cool.  Love that.

It's a Vicmarc VM150 with 3.5" shark jaws.  I do most of my work with the VM120 and VM150 (interchangeable jaws) these days.  I really like this set of jaws because they bring the work out from the body of the chuck and make it much easier to work on the bottom.

Hays county pecan.

Is Hays County pecan unique within the species or because pecan groves are just more predominant within the region?

Only significant due to the historic nature of the wood.  My stock of Hays County pecan was taken from the Hays County courthouse lawn.  It was removed due to insect damage and was made available to the AAW clubs.  Said to be planted in the 1800's when the county was established.
