August 13, 20205 yr Popular Post Boy, we could use some rain in this part of Pennsylvania. Of course the upside is that the grass doesn't need mowing Lots happening this week with our turners! Our Patriot Turners- Both @FlGatorwood , @Artie and @Larry Cutlip received their raffle prizes and posted thanks to @Jim from Easy Wood Tools for their participation and supplying the Easy Wood Tools products! Aartie asked us for advice on additional turning equipment in his post. Check it out and see if you can think of anything else he might need- @Andrew is really progressing with his pen turning- Andrew's post from last week on pressure pots has continued to generate more discussion and suggestions- @Ron Altier posted an update on his Ultraviolet finish. Ron also showed us a really awesome "ornament". He thinks he may have to modify it to be used on a Christmas tree- @DRAGON1 Is looking for a little help. He needs a coffee mug turned. Maybe one of our turners can help him out. Here is his request- Last week's "Wednesday's..." generated a series of comments on a stuck screw on a carbide cutter. @Jim from Easy Wood Tools provided the answer as well as uploading an information sheet from Easy Wood Tools- What’s Coming Up- Click on the above image for the link to registration and more information. Click on the image for the link to the registration. For The Newbies- @AndrewB asked s about tearout a while back. Mike Peace recently posted a video explaining why this happens and some of the ways to prevent it- Want to try a little fancier bowl? Carl Jacobson shows us how- Expand Your Horizons- One of the most interesting types of wood to turn is spalted wood. Many species of wood can have spalting and it creates unbelievable patterns. An example can be seen in the video above. Here is a blog post from Woodcraft- https://www.woodcraft.com/blog_entries/woodsense-spotlight-on-spalted-wood New Turning Items- I have to thank @Cliff for this week's new turning item. This is probably the best thought out steady rest I've seen. It is a little expensive but in the same neighborhood as the Carter steady- Everything Else- Rick Turns posted two updates on videos this week. This first one has several interesting entries. Look for one on resin molds, a series of short videos on turning tools from Record Tools and one on homemade abrasive pastes. Rick's second post has an extensive list of videos. Rick writes- "this video announces a playlist of the latest woodturning videos from every active woodturning channel that I have located and cataloged in my database." Finally finished up that little cherry bowl that wasn't supposed to crack because it was soaked in a soap solution. For the past 3 days I've been milling materials for some more rolling pins. Not hard just repetitive. Safe turning and stay well
August 13, 20205 yr Great post @lew lots of stuff to watch when I finally come in from outside work. This time of year the lathe takes vacation while I hit the yard improvements.
August 13, 20205 yr Thank you @lew, for all these videos and links. Some very interesting information. You work miracles with wood. That bowl is incredible. Really nice save. Also, thank you for mentioning my receipt of the EWT. I have them all prepped but now I need to shop for tips. And, I have an idea for the wrenches. Just need to get busy. Thank you, @lew, for all these weekly posts. They are interesting, challenging and informative.
August 13, 20205 yr As usual great information. ...I didn't know that many tags could be applied to a topic.

August 13, 20205 yr Nice post @lew just saw this..... I'm still tryin to figure out what I'm going to use for a resin mold LOL I did not order any premade molds seeing that was beyond the budget.

August 13, 20205 yr I've got little chunks of PVC pipe that I used to hold sanding belts on not sure if thats the same thing but that's what I've got.
August 13, 20205 yr Author Not sure what tools you have or your personal eating habits, but, if you get takeout from the oriental places and have a saw, this might work- Fill it about half full of resin, let it cure, rip away the plastic, saw up the piece into pen blanks. If you want to cast a bowl, the Dollar store has plastic bowls that you can do the same thing-
August 13, 20205 yr Right now I'm just going to stick to pen blanks start small then maybe bowls for resin at a later time, not quite ready for that one yet.
August 15, 20205 yr Author @Gunny Thanks! @Gerald Thank You! The bowl is going to be a wedding gift. No epoxy. Thans, too, for the corrugated plastic idea- forgot about that stuff. @HandyDan Thanks! @FlGatorwood Thank You! Looking forward to seeing those EWT tools in action! @Larry Buskirk Thanks! @AndrewB Thank You! Edited August 15, 20205 yr by lew
