April 11, 20224 yr Popular Post Welp,..got my weekend worth of work over so now back to some living...this thing is starting to talk to me a little bit. Details as to exactly what type etc. are yet to be determined..but I'm seeing this as a great skeleton for some hand tool storage/work space tray. Also not sure if it will be wall mounted or ride on the bench but it'll come. Will be starting to sand and customize soon. Will repurpose other boards from the chest for the build. Went down in the shop while drinking my coffee this afternoon...took the ol' leather loops out and the little wedge shown in the lower left hand corner. As it is oriented right now it's new "bottom" was the old "back" of the chest....if that makes sense. Also this looks like pine to me...what say ye gent's? ............and this leather was cut from a quality hide. Very grainy..lotsa character. No ideas at the moment as to reusing it ( If so some Neats footoil treatment or equivalent will be in order) but just set aside for now. Did chuck these tiny tacks though. They were rusted enough and so small that they would not be used again.

Upholsterer, drapery, sailmaker, maybe? Not a drummer but perhaps another sales trade. Lockable to keep out the curious but not overly secure.

A little of everything. These are the last of the scraps; the main piece rests in cool darkness, awaiting a decent table saw ...a lap-joint wall-mount headboard or tea shelves are planned for that old post.

April 12, 20224 yr Popular Post So...what is on my bench... Just a table top...don't have room for the base.. Maybe later this week, I can get the two to meet up?
April 13, 20224 yr Popular Post That should be a sturdy table. Is that a bead detail on the outside corner of the legs?
April 14, 20224 yr Popular Post Had one crack,..was pretty much a complete bust out that was already there. Glued it up yesterday. Going to start doing some sanding first chance I get. I wasn't using a ton of pressure but it looked like it was thinking about buckling on me...went ahead and threw a clamp on the flat side as well.
April 14, 20224 yr Popular Post Knocked an inch off of what will be the front of the tool tray..got the rest of it broke down and cleaned of all nails. Picked out 1 stripy looking piece and hit it with some 120. By no means done but it gives me a little better idea of what I have. The bottom of the pull out box revealed a name....."Otis Roberts" can't really make out the middle initial. Largest board is over 33" long and over 11.5" wide. I'll clean up the front lip by hand...probably put some sort of edge on it.

Some of the farm market vendors would LOVE wood with that patina. To make a mini-stairs-type step stool. They place it on their table, arrange their bottles of maple syrup or lavender soap, and have storage beneath, hidden from passersby.
April 15, 20224 yr Popular Post Cleaning up some of the slats I ripped off my dumpster-retrieved beam end. Cutting, it smelled piney. Nice grain. Planing, the longleaf odor came out. The outer pieces and especially edges have a strong ¿creosote? smell and feel.
