I'm fixing to steam bend some air dried white oak in a pretty small radius I hope. Reading the Veritas instructions they say the moisture content should be 25% going into the steam box. My white oak is ~8% how do you get it back up to 25%? I saw in one video the chap had his wood in a vertical pvc pipe full of water. I'm shooting for a 1/4" thickness and 1 1/2" wide with a 2" radius on the inside of the bend. The part will be U shaped and it's to hold Sweet German Baloney in the fridge lol. I've been pretty distracted from wood working for the last few months... JT

After quite a bit of consideration, I recently bit the bullet and bought a Veritas router plane kit and after using it on a couple of projects I have some comments. First, this is a really really useful piece of kit. I have routed out notches in my split top benchtop filler bar, cleaned up the bottoms of blind mortises, routed dados for ledgers, and dealt with some particularly stubborn grain on a couple of tenons. In each case, this has been a joy to work with. I bought the whole kit with cutters from 1/16” to 3/4” The larger cutters are two piece to facilitate sharpening with the clever flat extension included in the kit. I debated a lot between open and closed mouth router planes but the Veritas solves this problem by being able to swivel the cutter clamp 180 degrees and lock the cutter in place on what would normally be the back side. It is a compromise on the open mouth cutter for sure but it does work well. Adjustment of the depth and depth stop is straightforward and using some brass setup blocks, very precise. The pitch is 1/32” / turn so you can accurately dial in your depth of cut even if you aren’t using the depth stop. The fence is well constructed and a lot sturdier than it looks, it also has mounting holes for a longer fence piece if you need to make one. Definitely happy with this one.

A couple years ago I purchased a full set of Veritas Spoke Shaves and chair scrapers, I have not had a complete chance to use them all, but I just played with this concave shave on my most recent chair, obviously the diameter of the shave does not fit the diameter of the post, as these shaves are kind of sized for Windsors more or less. But working with it the little that I did, it's a beauty. It's a joy to handle, and the adjustment screws are nice to have the twin screws, I can really dial in the shave. -

I have a couple of questions for the spokeshave users out there. I am considering buying one of the Veritas spokeshaves from Lee Valley. While acknowledging from the beginning that I have absolutely no experience with spokeshaves, here are my opinions. It would seem to me that the most used configuration would be concave, so that is what I am thinking of starting with. Also, when considering flat vs block planes, what can a flat spokeshave do that the block plane can't? Comments?

I read that some of the replacement blades for the Veritas spokeshaves were no longer available. I emailed Lee Valley about this. I see that some of the Veritas spokeshave blades are no longer available, including directly from Veritas. Is Lee Valley going to discontinue this line, or are you going to continue providing the PM-V11 as replacement blades? This is their reply: Thank you for your e-mail. We were advised Veritas® was discontinuing their A2 and O1 steel blades for their spokeshaves but the PM-V11® blades would and are still being produced for them. As such, we have discontinued the A2 and O1 versions of the spokeshaves and won’t be getting any more of these in stock once we sell out of what we still have available. Just information for everyone.

As I was cleaning out my shop further today, I came across a brand new in the box plug cutter and a matching drill bit! It was like Christmas! I wonder what else is hiding in those crevices?
